Say hello to NvDA remote Support add-on version 2

Hi all,

Two years ago, two blind programmers sat down and thought about how to let you connect to remote computers for free, all using the power of NVDA screen reader. They decided to start a crowdfunding campaign, and in the matter of weeks, they raised their fundraising goal, worked on this new idea, and unveiled this project. The name of this project: NVDA Remote Support.

The developers of this add-on has just released version 2 of this add-on. Among other changes, this version will let you see what’s happening on the remote computer via a local braille display, as well as let you type text in braille and sent over to the remote computer running NVDA and Remote add-on 2.0. There were also changes made to the internals of this add-on, changed how add-on dialogs are shown on screen and others.

You can learn more about NVDA remote Support add-on 2.0 at:

https://nvdaremote.com/docs/

Disclaimer: the add-on is copyright Chris Toth and Tyler Spivey, 2015-2017. I am only a contributor to this project. Please contact Chris and Tyler if you have support questions concerning this add-on.

Enjoy the new add-on release.

Cheers,

Joseph

In Word 2002/3, even if the file from elsewhere is saved with the old format, occasionally whole pages will vanish for nvda, though it may well be the same for the sighted.
The only way I've found to read these bits of the files is to cut and past it into a different editor.

Re: Filling out MS Word Document

Quentin,

Thanks for confirming that what I found in my own Word 2010 configuration with regard to overtype mode being disabled is now the default for later versions of Word.  I used to hate, hate, hate how easy it was to accidentally activate it, though I can see precisely why it would be incredibly handy under the circumstances described earlier.  I'm going to have to check out if JAWS does something clever to have the toggle key sequence mentioned by Mr. Maher work when it's running, as it does not when it is not.

I still use Word forms with blind clients when I know that they will be responsible for churning out the same thing over and over again.  They're very handy for things like check templates (once you get the positioning correct), envelope templates, and forms around an office like taking phone messages.  It also makes life much  easier if you happen to get distracted in the middle of filling one out (at least if they're put together correctly) because you can hit the F1 key to have information about the form field that you're currently in spoken and know where you're picking up.

Re: VarioUltra and NVDA

Simon Jaeger

Hmmm, I didn't think NVDA copied HTML formatting along with content. If it does, that's pretty cool. I didn't see anything in the user guide about it, sadly. I'm pretty limited in what I can do with the keyboard. I can write in computer Braille and use the arrows and enter, and that's pretty much it. I can't backspace and I can't even use the letters as web navigation keys. Maybe it'd work better if I went through brltty or over USB, but it's definitely kinda broken on Bluetooth.

Re: Filling out MS Word Document

Quentin Christensen

I don't think Word forms will ever increase in popularity now that it's very hard to find the controls to create them - you need to enable the developer ribbon first now to get the buttons on the ribbon.  I guess a lot of forms are moving to web page forms now?

Anyway, the other thing I wanted to chime in on was that overtype mode is disabled by default in recent versions of Word.  You need to enable it by going into file menu (alt+f), selecting options (t) then control+tab five times to get to "Advanced", then either press alt+o to get to "use the insert key to control overtype mode".

The other option is to add it to the status bar, then you can press F6, then arrow to it and then press enter, but if you are going to do that, you might as well just enable using INSERT - note if you have INSERT set as your NVDA key, you'll need to press it twice to toggle overtype mode.

Regards

Quentin.

Nevzat,

You are the recipient of an MS-Word document that is a form that is meant to be printed and filled out by hand, which seems to be how most of them get made.  Why true MS-Word forms, with form fields, have never come into common use I will never know.

What I tend to do is to select the underlines as a group, then use the underline feature related to the font in use to type in its replacement.

I hate even doing this as it can cause things to shift that shouldn't shift, but typing in front of the underscores that have been put in the document as the line to write on will guarantee that things will shift and the final result will be, shall we say, unexpected.

Those who are creating MS-Word forms had ought to know how to actually create MS-Word forms with form fields that you simply tab through and type.  But that ship has long ago sailed and you'll get lots of "forms" that are meant to be printed as paper forms for filling out by hand.

Thanks re the subject Jim.

Regarding the question, NVDA+tab to read the item with focus does read the coordinates, although it reads the contents first.  Thinking on it, that's possibly a bug - it should read the location first, then the contents of the item, however, there is an upcoming solution: NVDA+numpad delete (laptop layout is NVDA+delete) will, from 2017.1 (it's in the current master build if you want to try it now), announce the current worksheet name and cell coordinates.

Regards

Quentin.

Hi,

I changed the subject to reflect the nature of the questions. Something I should have done in the first place.

Yes 16.4.

Thanks,

Hi Jim,

Which version of NVDA do you have? If you are using 2016.4, this may explain why you’re not getting what you are looking for.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi all,

Embarrassingly,  I can’t find the keystroke to give cell coordinates in Excel. I don’t want the content just the cell coordinates.

Many thanks,

Jim.

Hi everyone,

NV Access has a new blog called "In-Process".  We will keep you up to date with the week to week happenings from the organisation, staff and of course, NVDA.

The first post of In-Process is online now: http://www.nvaccess.org/category/in-process/

Kind regards

Quentin.
