Hi

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words! While I was very happy to pass the exam, (as I'm sure all the other NVDA experts world wide were) I am always happy to see any positive publicity for NVDA. Both Mick and James saw the initial big picture when they first started...I'm just happy to be able to do what I can in terms of promoting the NVDA screen reader from here in New Zealand! It benefits a variety of people and they can only benefit from it if they know about it!

Really, it's an international team effort (users, developers, bug finders/testers, translators, donors etcetera) that all make NVDA what it is - a community driven screen reader! I'm just glad to be able to help people out in whichever way I can!

Thanks again everyone.

I had a phone call this morning from a local newspaper who

It is about the first person in New Zealand getting the NVDA

Are you by any chance closing this invisible window of Skype? If so -
stop doing it and Skype should behave as expected.

Hope this helps.

Re: Nv Access Checkout Page

It appears that the first combo box does an odd thing.  With Chrome, I can open the combo box, write the name of a country in the edit field and press enter.  Then, the combo box says the name of the country I've written.  I'm not sure what happens in Firefox, I didn't try just that procedure when I was testing Firefox.  I didn't play with the second combo box enough to say anything about it.  But the first combo box is seen by Chrome as a combo edit box and for whatever reason, it is completely nonstandard and I assume the second one is as well.  You are placed in an edit field that isn't in the combo box when you open the combo box.  then you type a country, press enter, and you have to find the combo box again because you are nowhere near it.

I've not seen it on Microsoft but I thing its still around on other sites. Make sure you get the full installer. Microsoft near the end started just to send out a stub loader and since they took it down this version won't install.

I may have a copy somewhere but I stopped using it for reasons of inconvenience with multiple accounts and a tendency to lose folders without any warning.
Not sure why its so complicated for Microsoft to make a good robust accessible email and news program any more.

If you want to use the mail app specifically, I'm not sure. As I understand matters, Windows Live Mail works well on your machine. There may be other reasons but the only reason I am aware of that you stopped using it is because, when composing in the edit field, you had to press alt twice before you could read what you had written. This caused you to leave and return to the edit field. If that is the only problem, why not use that program?

Re: NVDA/Unresponsive Apps

I see no benefit in putting drives to sleep on a short term basis except when using a laptop if you intend to leave it on for extended periods of not being used and you want to save battery power.  Maybe having drives sleep overnight if the computer isn't going to be used makes sense but then, it would make more sense to have the whole computer sleep.  A drive just sitting there spinning isn't going to put any meaningful wear on the drive.  Spinning down and spinning up a drive repeatedly over the course of a day puts more wear on it than just leaving it alone.  It isn't likely to cause problems because drives have such a long life cycle for being spun up and down but it still is unnecessary wear.

And if you toggle browse mode back on, you're yanked back up to the top of the ckecout page.
This is with NVDA 2017.1 and Firefox 54. I've not tried edge, as accessibility there isn't great from what I hear.

Re: Reading password protected image pdf using NVDA OCR

Gene

Whatever the procedure is for recognizing material with NVDA, it's using a free OCR system.  I doubt it's as accurate as a for profit system.  But with any OCR program, where precise figures are concerned such as an exact numerical amount, while the recognition might be accurate, I wouldn't trust it.  If it sounds correct, it probably is but it may not be recognized with 100 percent accuracy no matter what OCR program is used.

Hi Florian,

If you setup NVDA to use the "Laptop" keyboard layout, it uses different keystrokes which don't expect a number pad. Some of the other regular keystrokes are different too, such as NVDA+a to read all (instead of NVDA+down arrow) and NVDA+l to read the current line (rather than NVDA+up arrow). Particularly see the following sections of the User Guide:

Object navigation: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html?#ObjectNavigation
Review cursor: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html?#ReviewingText

The other keys are scattered throughout the User Guide.

Regards

Quentin.

I have had this now and again for years I have just lived with sorry not much help but your not really on your own.

On 27/06/2017 14:55, Rob wrote:
Would it be possible to set it up so that, if an app stops responding, NVDA doesn't also stop?
Here's an example.
Note: this is not a definitive example, just the one that happened most recently prior to composing this message and is thus fresh in my mind.
I have drives in my computer that go to sleep when they aren't being accessed. If you try to access the drive, any program used to access them stalls until the drive wakes up, and NVDA stalls right along with it. The whole computer isn't stalled, just the foreground app and NVDA. I know this because I can alt tab out of the app and, for example, hit a key to start an audio file playing again. NVDA doesn't wake up again until the stalled app starts moving.
This is probably going to be another one of those situations where nobody else can pin it down, or: I can't duplicate this so you are on your own, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Some programs, Thunderbird and Outlook, will apply message rules to IMAP accounts.  others, Windows Live Mail, and the old Outlook Express, won't.

Did you use IMAP or POP3 before?  I much prefer POP3 if synchronization isn't desired among devices.

Depends on the email client. Most work automatically though. You set up the
account as told to, then when you go to the account it should ask if you
want to download folders, then when you open a folder it normally downloads
headers and the whole file when you go into that message. Some clients can
be set up so they download it all when you go there or you can ask it to
download all messages in all folders. You can also often hide folders you
are not interested in.
Some clients retain messages while others seem to keep them only for that
session.
Also of cours you cannot normally use message rules on Imap servers as the
sorting is done at the source. You can often make other folders and use them
manually to stare messages on the server but this depends on where the email
server is Google seem to do their own thing in this regard while others  are
more traditional.
At least, normally you can get access to the spam folder on Imap which you
do not get on a pop3 server.

Hi joseph

A friend has managed to sort out the problem for me,  below I sent you a copy of his instructions, thanks for your help.

Hi Anthony,

Do you have the latest version of NVDA (2017.2) installed?  If so, please try the following:

* Start NVDA

* Turn on Sticky Keys

* Press the NVDA key twice quickly (this should lock the NVDA key)

* Press F12 twice quickly

And you should hear NVDA speak the date (and not the time).

Press the NVDA key once to unlock.

Regards

Anthony

Hi joseph

I disabled and enabled the add-ons as you explained to me, but the problem remained there even with the sticky keys turned off.

To remind you again what is the problem, when I press the insert plus f12 to check the time it works, but when I press it twice to read me out the date it doesn’t work.

And that happens withother commands where I have to press them more than once.

Thanks in advance

Anthony

Hi,

And sticky keys option in Ease of Access isn’t helping, and did restarting NVDA (both with add-ons enabled and disabled) improve the situation?

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi joseph

I am a single handedperson so to be able to use my laptop keyboard I need to use the sticky keys.

My problem is that I am noticing that the sticky keys are interfering with the capslock,

And the other problem is when I come for example to press the insert plus f12 twice to check the date it doesn’t work.

And that happens also with the other commands that we have to press them once, twice and more to do do certain things.

In my opinion the sticky keys are not working as they should with NVDA.

Can you please do something about it to be resolved?

I hope you will be able to understand what I mean.

Thanks in advance

Anthony

Dear NVDA community:

For those on NVDA users and add-ons lists: a few days ago I announced Project Hidden Singer/Big Bang, a project to restructure code in Windows 10 App Essentials and say goodbye to old workarounds. This is partly motivated by the fact that, with NVDA 2017.3, features from this add-on will make their debut as part of the screen reader itself, so the add-on is no longer required for some major tasks. The below announcement is just a first step in this project, with the complete picture emerging by September 2017.

Announcement text:

As part of NVDA 2017.3, NV Access, together with Joseph Lee, a Windows Insider and a noted NVDA expert in United States, have developed a set of features designed to improve user experience for Windows 10 users using NVDA. Prior to the upcoming release, an add-on called Windows 10 app Essentials have included features such as sounds to indicate appearance of search suggestions, announcing top search suggestion in braille and various workarounds for Windows 10 and various universal apps. Joseph, the author of the Windows 10 App Essentials, is delighted to announce that these features will be part of upcoming NVDA 2017.3, scheduled to hit the air sometime in August 2017.

As part of this work, I (Joseph Lee) would like to announce three important things:

  1. A fall release of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on will require NVDA 2017.3. This will be in place no later than October 2017.
  2. For those using NVDA snapshots (master and/or next), a new “pilot development” channel will be introduced. You may occasionally hear references to “try builds”, “fast ring snapshots” and what not, but in context of this add-on, it all refers to the pilot channel. This channel will not show up in update channel list, as this channel is designed to receive continuous feedback i.e. this channel requires NVDA snapshots. Anyone using development channel of this add-on along with NVDA master or next snapshots will be moved to this channel, as code in this channel parts ways with compatibility layer code, as changes made to NVDA snapshots will be reflected in these builds. If you are using Windows 10 App Essentials development snapshots under NVDA stable (2017.2, for example), you’ll stay in development channel (sometimes called “slow ring”) in order to preserve compatibility layer routines.
  3. Speaking of snapshot combinations: starting from June 28th WinTenApps snapshot, those on pilot development channel will get a build that is equivalent to NVDA next snapshots. This snapshot removes compatibility layer in place for search suggestion announcement, as this is no longer required if you are on latest master and/or next snapshots as NVDA itself will handle this for you.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Apart from telling them they are somewhat thick you mean?
Those chits are often poorly printed thermally and the image quality may not be good enough for any OCR to do much with it. often the image is skewed a bit as well as indistinct.
surely it is not beyond them to manually type the details on a real document for you, its only a chit after all.

Hi,

I have received a payslip in image form protected with a full password. I can open the file in adobe DC after entering the password. However, I cannot get at the contents because this is an image of the print receipt. I tried converting it with the OCR addon in NVDA but I really don't know how to do it. My attempts do not seem to be capturing the image of the contents.

Any advice please?

All the best,

I'm almost certain this is Microsoft changing the name of the executable again. I read this both here and on another list. its really annoying screenreader makers.

Hi, everyone,

I was using outlook but it crashed so I thought I’d use the mail app again. Now when I hit enter on a message, all I hear is “message document”. Is there a setting I might need to change?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rosemarie
I do have the add-on installed.
