Please welcome Windows 10 App Essentials 17.07 to your NVDA installations #addonrelease

Hi everyone,

Windows 10 App Essentials 17.07 is now available. This version provides updated compatibility with latest work done by NV Access when it comes to supporting Windows 10 and universal apps. More info can be found at:

https://github.com/josephsl/wintenApps/releases/tag/17.07

Note: WinTenApps 17.07 requires Windows 10 Version 1607 (build 14393) or later. Also, for some of you, when you check for add-on updates, you’ll see a version named “20170628-devPilot”. This is the new development pilot branch where the add-on will work with code introduced in latest NVDA master and/or next snapshots.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

I guessed, but I sometimes think the world thinks we are all using 10. Not got a great deal against it other than Microsoft keep on changing whole bits that work to bits that don't, but just not spending my money at the moment. Prices of ordinary stuff is going up in the UK just at the moment you know.

Hi Brian,
No, no, no. No, because we're not discussing NVDA's compatibility with old
operating systems. No, this does not apply to folks not using Windows 10.
And no, this does not apply to anyone using stable builds of NVDA with this
add-on. In other words: no need to worry.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi not clear if this means that those of us using other operating systems
get moved or not. I mainly use master on windows 7 and test next on xp as I
have no windows 10 machine at present here.
I'm assuming with all of this complexity, that somehow whichever branch we
are on, we can test the backwards compatibility of the next upcoming release
of nvda as we do now in Master, as otherwise it will get very confusing and
possibly dangerous for those of us using older systems for stability
reasons.

As an aside I noted a couple of weeks back that Windows XP had yet another
security update for its network code. so at least somebody cares!

Subject: [nvda] Attention Windows 10 App Essentials users: pilot development
channel, fall release requirements, legacy code being removed

Dear NVDA community:

For those on NVDA users and add-ons lists: a few days ago I announced
Project Hidden Singer/Big Bang, a project to restructure code in
Windows
10
App Essentials and say goodbye to old workarounds. This is partly
motivated by the fact that, with NVDA 2017.3, features from this
add-on will make their debut as part of the screen reader itself, so
the add-on is no longer required for some major tasks. The below
announcement is just a first step in this project, with the complete
picture emerging by September 2017.

Announcement text:

As part of NVDA 2017.3, NV Access, together with Joseph Lee, a Windows
Insider and a noted NVDA expert in United States, have developed a set
of features designed to improve user experience for Windows 10 users
using NVDA. Prior to the upcoming release, an add-on called Windows 10
app Essentials have included features such as sounds to indicate
appearance of search suggestions, announcing top search suggestion in
braille and various workarounds for Windows 10 and various universal
apps. Joseph, the author of the Windows 10 App Essentials, is
delighted to announce that these features will be part of upcoming
NVDA 2017.3, scheduled to hit the air sometime in August 2017.

As part of this work, I (Joseph Lee) would like to announce three
important
things:

1. A fall release of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on will require
NVDA 2017.3. This will be in place no later than October 2017.
2. For those using NVDA snapshots (master and/or next), a new "pilot
development" channel will be introduced. You may occasionally hear
references to "try builds", "fast ring snapshots" and what not, but in
context of this add-on, it all refers to the pilot channel. This
channel will not show up in update channel list, as this channel is
designed to receive continuous feedback i.e. this channel requires NVDA
snapshots.
Anyone using development channel of this add-on along with NVDA master
or next snapshots will be moved to this channel, as code in this
channel parts ways with compatibility layer code, as changes made to
NVDA snapshots will be reflected in these builds. If you are using
Windows 10 App Essentials development snapshots under NVDA stable
(2017.2, for example), you'll stay in development channel (sometimes
called "slow ring") in order to preserve compatibility layer routines.
3. Speaking of snapshot combinations: starting from June 28th
WinTenApps snapshot, those on pilot development channel will get a
build that is equivalent to NVDA next snapshots. This snapshot removes
compatibility layer in place for search suggestion announcement, as
this is no longer required if you are on latest master and/or next
snapshots as NVDA itself will handle this for you.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi joseph

I disabled and enabled the add-ons as you explained to me, but the problem remained there even with the sticky keys turned off.

To remind you again what is the problem, when I press the insert plus f12 to check the time it works, but when I press it twice to read me out the date it doesn’t work.

And that happens withother commands where I have to press them more than once.

Thanks in advance

And sticky keys option in Ease of Access isn’t helping, and did restarting NVDA (both with add-ons enabled and disabled) improve the situation?

Hi joseph

I am a single handedperson so to be able to use my laptop keyboard I need to use the sticky keys.

My problem is that I am noticing that the sticky keys are interfering with the capslock,

And the other problem is when I come for example to press the insert plus f12 twice to check the date it doesn’t work.

And that happens also with the other commands that we have to press them once, twice and more to do do certain things.

In my opinion the sticky keys are not working as they should with NVDA.

Can you please do something about it to be resolved?

I hope you will be able to understand what I mean.

Thanks in advance

I don't recall exactly when this started happening but I think it
started with the previous version of NVDA and continued with the
current version. I was actualy hoping that the new version would have
dealt with the issue but it didn't. I dropped Firefox and started
using Chrome instead and that has seemed to minimize the occurrence of
the such-and-such program is not responding message although it does
it every now and then perhaps just twice a day, but that's definitely
better than ten times a day. I also notice a slow down of nVDA as the
day progresses but restarting NVDA handles that and what I mean by a
slow down is that the speech seems to get laggier to the point where
it's noticeable.

hello, yes of course!

that was the first thing i did.
but now i know the reason for my problem.
the versions of skype be low 7.30 are good, the newer versions are buggy.
now i've installed the version 7.26 of skype and my problem is away.
so for every one who want to install skype, don't use the newest versions above 7.3x.
lower versions you can install if you want but don't update!
that was the solution.
thanks for all who have tried to help me.

Re: who knows this problem with skype?

Hello Brian,

Well, in my report I forgot to clarify that the window in question is invisible, but focusable. So, when we close Skype's main window, this invisible window gets focused. And if we close this focused invisible window of Skype, the problems described by me in that report (including that Skype continues to ring even after we answer in incoming call) start to occur and the only way to fix those issues is to terminate Skype. On the next launch of Skype, the problem is not there, until we close that invisible window again. That is why I've asked paul if he's intentionally or unintentionally closing that focusable invisible window of Skype, because that causes the problem he's having (and all the others described in my report) to start occurring.

And yes - downgrading to Skype 7.35 I think fixes the issue - the focusable invisible window stops appearing when we close Skype's main window.

Hitting alt-f4 closes only the Desktop window, not skype itselfs. It is still open in your systray. Find it there, right click it and choose exit, so you don't need to reboot.

Subject: [attention to joseph lee, sticky keys with NVDA

Dear NVDA community:

For those on NVDA users and add-ons lists: a few days ago I announced Project Hidden Singer/Big Bang, a project to restructure code in Windows 10 App Essentials and say goodbye to old workarounds. This is partly motivated by the fact that, with NVDA 2017.3, features from this add-on will make their debut as part of the screen reader itself, so the add-on is no longer required for some major tasks. The below announcement is just a first step in this project, with the complete picture emerging by September 2017.

Announcement text:

As part of NVDA 2017.3, NV Access, together with Joseph Lee, a Windows Insider and a noted NVDA expert in United States, have developed a set of features designed to improve user experience for Windows 10 users using NVDA. Prior to the upcoming release, an add-on called Windows 10 app Essentials have included features such as sounds to indicate appearance of search suggestions, announcing top search suggestion in braille and various workarounds for Windows 10 and various universal apps. Joseph, the author of the Windows 10 App Essentials, is delighted to announce that these features will be part of upcoming NVDA 2017.3, scheduled to hit the air sometime in August 2017.

As part of this work, I (Joseph Lee) would like to announce three important things:

  1. A fall release of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on will require NVDA 2017.3. This will be in place no later than October 2017.
  2. For those using NVDA snapshots (master and/or next), a new “pilot development” channel will be introduced. You may occasionally hear references to “try builds”, “fast ring snapshots” and what not, but in context of this add-on, it all refers to the pilot channel. This channel will not show up in update channel list, as this channel is designed to receive continuous feedback i.e. this channel requires NVDA snapshots. Anyone using development channel of this add-on along with NVDA master or next snapshots will be moved to this channel, as code in this channel parts ways with compatibility layer code, as changes made to NVDA snapshots will be reflected in these builds. If you are using Windows 10 App Essentials development snapshots under NVDA stable (2017.2, for example), you’ll stay in development channel (sometimes called “slow ring”) in order to preserve compatibility layer routines.
  3. Speaking of snapshot combinations: starting from June 28th WinTenApps snapshot, those on pilot development channel will get a build that is equivalent to NVDA next snapshots. This snapshot removes compatibility layer in place for search suggestion announcement, as this is no longer required if you are on latest master and/or next snapshots as NVDA itself will handle this for you.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: who knows this problem with skype?

Chris

Is there not another way to answer a call rather than using a keyboard shortcut?

Even if its only to see if the way you answer is the problem or not

I thought there was a answer button that can be clicked on or they use to be one or via the menus

Or set it to auto answer the calls

Using Autopsy with NVDA

I am trying to use Autopsy, with NVDA

I have downloaded the latest version from https://www.sleuthkit.org/autopsy/download.php However Autopsy will not work with NVDA

It seems to work fine with jaws, however there is absolutely nothing from NVDA any ideas why this is happening?

When I say absolutely nothing I mean that NVDA remains silent when in the Autopsy window.

Has anyone on the list used this program?

Hello,

Look at this bug report that I've filed with Microsoft about a similar (if not the same) issue:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skype/forum/skype_windesk-skype_messms/problems-caused-by-an-invisible-window-of-skype/30f2b194-0287-4018-a391-9fbc65b82a17?tm=1498289989517

Are you by any chance closing this invisible window of Skype? If so - stop doing it and Skype should behave as expected.

Hope this helps.
