Well as a personal preference, I'd like to reduce the length of pauses in some synths, but I think its more down to the way the manufacturer of the synth programmed in the pauses rather than what NVDA's doing with it. I suppose an addon could be written that parses text for double punctuation, up to say 5 of each, then splits the string up that it sends to output. That isn't me however, I am not good at coding. One thing I do wish, however, is that the concatinative synths like Acapela, Vocalizer and the like would offer user control over pauses. The reason being is its one of the things that stops me from using them as my main voice. We've gotten response times down to acceptable levels, its just pauses, I don't want a second in between sentences, or half of one for a comma. That just breaks up the flow too much for me, I like a little bit of pause, but not to that extent.

Silence is golden
Hi all, I wonder if anyone has any ideas on something NVDA users probably don't need to do very often. I'd like to be able to get a little bit more control over the amount of pause time that is produced by punctuation symbols.
I know a commas, semicolons and periods / full stops pause a program-controlled amount, but if I want to pause for the time of two adjacent full stops, could that be achieved in any way? When I try the following test sentences: This is a test sentence. It uses one full stop. This is another test sentence. . It uses two full stops. Sentence 1 gives me the default pause for a full stop, but sentence two produces the same amount of pause and, annoyingly, says “This is another test sentence. dot It uses two full stops.” I was hoping I might be able to add a dictionary entry for '. .' and variants thereof, but with no success. My normal NVDA setting is for punctuation/symbol level of some, and turning it to none stops the 'dot' being announced for the second full stop, but the result is then exactly the same for both test sentences. I won't go into more detail here about why I want to do this, but please do ask if it has any significance :) Very grateful for any suggestions, Giles Abergavenny (UK) web: http://gilesturnbullpoet.com

Also, the default for NVDA is to save settings on
exit. If you are going to experiment, this is a bad setting. It
means that you might save settings you have no intention of making
permanent. This setting should be disabled. Open the NVDA menu, down
arrow to preferences and press enter. You are in a dialog. Tab to
save settings on exit. It's a check box. Uncheck it by pressing the
space bar. Tab to and activate the ok button.
Now save the setting to make it permanent.
Issue the command control NVDA key c and you should hear configuration
saved. I never have NVDA save anything automatically. I want to
control exactly when things are saved. In my strong opinion, save settings
on exit should not be enabled by default. It does a real disservice to new
users who may want to try different settings with no intention of making them
permanent. A perfect example of too much automation.
Do you know how to find information in the
manual? It's one long web page. Here is what the manual says in it's
first sentence or two about input composition settings:
The Input Composition Settings dialog can be found
under the Preferences menu. This dialog allows you to control how NVDA reports
the input of Asian characters, such as with IME or Text Service
Clearly, something you might be curious to know
what it is, but nothing it would make any sense to play with other than look at
unless you use Asian characters.

Re: strange problem
Gene
Do you understand that all commands such as control
NVDA key s and Control NVDA key v are used without going into the menus?
You can get to the same settings in the menus but such commands are shortcuts
that bypass the menus. You can use them anywhere. You aren't in NVDA
when you use them. You could be on the desktop, in a program, almost
anywhere.
In the menus, you would get to such settings by
opening the menus, then down arrowing to preferences and pressing enter.
Then down arrow to either synthesizer and press enter or voice settings and
press enter. It sounds as though you would save yourself a lot of time and
trouble by working with a good NVDA tutorial such as the one I sent a link to a
number of days ago.

Re: nvda choaks up arrowing down
Gene
There is no reason to believe at this time, that
any of the suggestions in the message quoted below apply. Many people have
reported such problems. There appears to be something in NVDA that needs
fixing and it may have been fixed in the version that people tried and discussed
perhaps four or five days ago. I don't remember what the term is for that
version. it is a trial version to see if issues were fixed. Before
worrying about processors or fans or all the other possibilities, try the trial
version. Also, if another screen-reader doesn't have these problems, that,
too, is evidence that the problem is an NVDA problem.

In a desktop its easy enough to clear out the cpu, regrease the syncs, replace a fan or psu and away you go. In a laptop while at home a coolent stand under the unit and external keyboard do help some. For your desktop especailly if it gets hot, putting a small fan by the case and letting it wrip is another solution, my friend who has his computers in an atic room uses the fan to keep himself and his machines cool, both get equally hot in there. Failing that you could have a bad keyboard or something ran out of power. I have had it where I will be typing on the board well wireless anyway and suddenly the system will not respond. There used to be a Microsoft fixit for this in xp and 7. seems odd if its in 10. Would be interesting to know if the machine was always used with a screenreader and originally was 7. --

Google Pinyin input and NVDA
Milos Przic
Hi all,
My question can be a little tricky, but I hope
there is someone on the list who uses the Google's pinyin input on their
PCs.
I am a beginner studying chinese and am still not
able to understand all the options in the Pinyin input settings, but with
somebody's help, if I change these, I might succeed. Of course, in order not to
clutter up the list if there are not many interested, you can also contact me
privately.
When I am typing chinese characters using the
Google pinyin input, I don't get the character description automatically. What I
do is, type a character, then find it with the arrow keys and with the
insert+numpad 2 twice read its description. It is a very slow way of typing, and
NVDA doesn't read the candidates' descriptions automatically although all the
settings in the input composition settings are checked. I am using Windows 10
and vocalizer Tian-Tian as the voice for reading Chinese. So do I have to check
something in the input settings in the Google pinyin itself also? What should I
do?
Thanks to everybody in advance, and best
regards!
Miloš

Re: nvda choaks up arrowing down
Well I'd check startup programs.

I'd also set scheduals of security software to times when you are not using the system or turn them off and just scan every so often. I'd also check startup programs and use something like ccleaner to handle those. You could have an overheating processer or stuck fan. There have been times where I have looked and realised I have no power cells for the units.

Re: NVDA Chokes Up When Arrowing Down
Well one strength of nvda is also its weakness.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Nvda focuses on using internal os libraries and standards to function. There are no third party dlls, or drivers or intercepts or any number of crappy middlemen and thats why nvda is good. At the same time if any of those libraries have bugs or other things do not work with them or they fail, nvda becomes useless. If jaws and other comercial products have anything to go for them, their major use of these layers protect them from a lot of issues with broken things. And for the most part this works. However performance is lower or can be and you may have to enter special modes to get things to work right. In nvda's case, most of what it uses is allready there. But if it isn't there and it doesn't have it in itself or a module then there can be trouble. One thing I can say though is that unless it really can't make sence of something it won't crash, and if it can't it probably just won't do whatever you want and go beep can't do this. I have found that your average layered screen reader can do a little more than nvda but give it something to hard for it, and it will try to do it anyway, even though it may not b be able to handle it. It will then crash, and depending on several factors either take itself, its settings or bits of your system with it. I have had some access software that did this. The system would crash because of something I couldn't do well it couldn't do, and it would go down, and take bits of windows with it. Windows wouldn't start and I would have to reformat to make windows start. I remember an old supernova sr which did this after testing some maps. Some stuff wouldn't work bits of things kept going, the system didn't start or run right. At first I thought the system had gone nuts but after reformatting the system about 10 times I found a pattern. I eventually tracked down the map and reported it. The issue was fixed but that was the end of my testing. And the intercepts before the direct, chain, mirror drivers and later on uia intercepts, well they were unstable. There were hacks to load 2 readers and that was fun, uninstall them wrong or run them both together and you lost the system.

They seem to fix one thing in Chrome and break others. I suspect when they test they do not actually use nvda.
