Re: NVDA 2016.2 RC1

Chris,

When 2016.RC1 became 2016.1 official all I did was an "install over" install even though, in that case RC1 became the official release, so there were no differences.

NVDA Add-Ons are installed under your own Windows user's Appdata\Roaming\nvda\addons folder, which is unaffected by installing updated versions of NVDA.  The NVDA Addons Manager places add-ons there and if any later installed version sees something there the Add-Ons remain available.  I installed NoBeepsSpeechMode back during the 2015 releases and have never had to reinstall it.

So, let me see if I understand this. Once youve downloaded NVDA 2016.2 RC1, when 2016.2 is officially released, you just update NVDA 2016.2 rc1 to the official release?
Also, what about addons? Are you still able to use the addons you've downloaded with release candidate.

Hi Tyler and Aravind,
Thanks for the help. It was extremely foolish of me not to have
thought of this before.
I enabled the 'report spelling errors' Document Formatting setting and
henceforth appeared the auditory indication option in the Keyboard
Settings dialog. Actually, I don't want verbal reporting at all, only
real-time auditory indications, because I don't want all the proper
nouns I have to frequently use to be flagged incorrect to me all the
time, only a beep would be endurable.
Would it be the case of more users possibly facing this issue and
having this request to receive only auditory warnings and no verbal
feedback for spelling errors?
Thanks.

Re: looking for pls or m3u file of a radio station stream

It can be a mess. A lot of the stations here in the US change streaming providers all the time. Sites like:

www.radio-locator.com

never keep thier links updated. Now for me me its not a big deal anymore if there is no available stream for a stand alone player I.E. Winamp. If the site uses a Flash player I simply go into volume control and turn down the volume level to where I want for Flash.

Very often, you can just do a right click on the listen link and then
choose save link as and 9 times out of 10 it will save a .pls or .m3u
file for you. The file may not be labeled correctly and may just say
listen.pls or something like that. Just rename it and save it where

Re: NVDA 2016.2: Thoughts on Formatting information dialog

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

Hi, I've been playing with this for some time now,and my comments are.
First sometimes it does not read all the formatting info, ie it misses out the bits at the start. However cursoring up seems logical, as its just read the lines so the cursor would logically be below the text not back at the top. However that seems to be dependent on the program, some, for example Dspeech when reading text or making an audio file position the cursor back at the tiop, but this is presumably a simple list and its read, hopefully from the start each time, but several times the font detail is missing unless I cursor up, as if it was overwritten by the second speaking of the word formatting.
I'm using windows 7 a very old copy of Word, which seems to be unsure if its word XP or 2003 most of the time. :-)

I like the feature as its a good snapshot of where you are and more easy to understand than the one we normally toggle on and off.

Dear all,
I acknowledge this to be a potentially subjective opinion and
consequently request, but initiating a discussion about the same all
the same, in order to gather more user feedback about this feature.
In NVDA version 2016.2 RC 1, you can now press NVDA + F twice in quick
succession to be presented formatting information for the
corresponding text in the form of a navigable dialog.
The two concerns I have here, which are quite trivial, but still
somewhat necessaryare as follows:
When NVDA + F is pressed twice in quick succession -
* NVDA reads all the text of that dialog, i.e. the formatting
information, and then when the user navigates the dialog, he finds
himself at the end of the dialog, and has to up arrow instead of the
usual down arrowing to explore information.
* NVDA says 'formatting' twice, with a pause, which may result in a
momentary delay, as opposed to saying it only once to announce the
opening of the dialog.
Note: I am testing this with Microsoft Office Word 2010, and this, and
my previous observation, both are based on a Windows 8.1 system.
In case these issues are considered more or less important by other
testers than me, and if it is easy enough for developers to speedily
implement and fix, I (or others) may file a ticket for the same.
Thanks.

Hi Robert,
I still am unable to get that option, come what may. I tried running
the setup file as a temporary copy, tried reinstalling it over my
current copy, tried restarting NVDA normally and with add-ons
disabled, but to no avail.
I am using a Windows 8.1 Professional 64 bit system, and just cannot
locate that option in NVDA's Keyboard Settings dialog. I wonder if the
download of NVDA was corrupt or what, because Firefox shows it as a
file of 18.1 mb, while it on my computer is shown as a file weighing
only 18, which of course could have occurred to to reasons, but I
still am thinking if it was a corrupt download problem (though highly
unlikely, you generally don't just miss one feature and get all thee
rest :)).
I wish someone else would have the same experience as mine. Is there
anything that the log could catch which I could pass on, somehow?
Thanks.

It's now also showing up 50.0 canary, etc., but anyway - will keep on playing around with it a bit.

Hi Jacob

My version of google has updated I think it is now 50 what you are saying is happening even when you go to do a search, it seems to go into a loop and will not focus on the content of the page. it looks as though this version is broken and even with a stable and master snapshot.

The problem is that I will, for example, open a new tab, or focus on address entry field, type in an address, and hit enter, and while window title tells me page has finished loading, tabbing around, using combinations of F6, shift+F6, etc. etc. don't ever focus on page's actual contents.

At times, however, focus will automatically have switched over to page contents, and, if I load a page from a bookmark, it also seems to do that pretty much every time.

Like said, biggest issue is inconsistency - as in, want to search for something, and would, honestly be quicker to just type in address for google.com rather than look for it in bookmarks, or else, I copy an address from an e-mail, or text file, and want to jut paste it into the address bar, but, then can't seem to get it to focus on the page contents.

This is on a windows 10 64 bit machine, using NVDA 2016.1, but, not sure either of those are relevant.

I'm not sure what you are describing.  When I use Chrome, which I don't use for regular browsing, Often all I see is the title bar with the name of the web page.  I may be able to get the page to display by opening and then closing a new tab.  I may have to completely reload the page.  I'm not sure if that is the problem you are describing.  I don't know how many people have this problem.  But I do and it is one reason I wouldn't consider using Chrome as my main browser.

Other reasons are how many things display as a web page.  It is far more convenient to have such things display as lists or dialogs.  Even Firefox, which has made things in the options dialog function like a web page, still has the items organized as lists you can arrow down.
Also, it appears to me that lots of menu items don't have shortcuts as has been standard in Windows programs for years.  I haven't found a short cut combination for something as important as book marks.  And I've seen other menu items with no short cuts.  This sort of thing after all these years of Google working on making chrome accessible are singularly unimpressive.

While in things like IE, and firefox, you could generally jump to/focus on actual webpage content using something like tab, or shift + tab keystrokes, or else ctrl + F6, it seems like chrome is somewhat inconsistent in that after I type a URL into it's address bar, at times, I can't too easily get NVDA to then actually switch over to interacting with the actual web page contents?

Is there some standard method/means to get this to happen that I'm missing, due to being too used to other browsers?

Ask since am sort of considering switching over to chrome as my primary web-browser, but, if this inconsistency carries on, then it's a no-go, since it's quite irritating...LOL!

TIA
