Hello,

There is a YouTube channel called techopolis where they did a demonstration of installing Windows 11 arm version using parallel. In this demo they also installed NVDA on it. It seemed to be responsive and work fairly well If you search for the techopolis channel on YouTube you should be able to find the video.

Hi all,

As the subject line indicates, for those who have tried this, I was wondering what the impact on performance and also battery life is when using NVDA in this scenario. In particular, when using NVDA/Windows in the VM most of the time. I have seen previous discussions about getting this to work, but not much discussion on performance and impact on the system when using it.

I understand that the new M1/Pro/Max systems are arm based, and to use Windows 10/11 on them, the only effective way is to install the arm version of Windows 10/11 pro as a VM  in Parallels (now version 17.1) under Mac-OSX. I understand the performance of Windows is ok, but that because software like NVDA is an x86 application, there is a reliance on Microsoft’s emulation to allow x86/x64 software to run when using the arm version of Windows. This is likely to impact more than just NVDA, but as NVDA has to be always running and is being used all the time, the impact may be greater in terms of the experience than with other applications that can be used once and then closed when not in use.

I realise that one of the hurdles for getting a good experience is sorting out the keyboard layout and key mappings. However, assuming this is sorted out, what I wondered was what the performance of using NVDA is like. i.e. is scrolling around the desktop and windows explorer fast or does it lag a bit? what happens in large word documents, web pages in Chrome or PDFs? I am also curious as to whether the very long battery life that people appear to be getting with these M1 macs is shorter in the above NVDA usage scenarios because of all the emulation going on, and if so, by how much. I was also wondering how coherence mode in Parallels works if you are using a screen reader like NVDA on the Windows side and VO on the Mac OSX side.

Thanks for any insights.

Kind regards.

Mat.

How long have you waited for the document to be recognized?  Have you set Adobe to recognize the whole document or only a certain range of pages, and then recognize more when you move beyond them?

With newer more powerful computers, I don’t know if this is much of an issue, but it used to take Adobe awhile to recognize large documents if you have it set to recognize the whole document.

Using a browser like Edge recognizes documents much faster and I’ve seen a few people saying it produces better results.  Browsers in general these days, at least the popular Windows oness, recognize PDF documents.  I’ve heard this or that person say Edge is better than others.  I haven’t compared.  But you may wish to try having a browser recognize the document.

Hello everyone,

I installed Adobe Acrobat reader DC and I went through the setup assistant and I set all the options I needed to set for a screen reader to be able to read a document properly.

However, when I open a document that I know is not an image, NVDA reads absolutely nothing in it even though Adobe Acrobat Reader DC displays it. I tried changing the reading order from left to right, top to bottom to infer from document and back, but it didn’t help at all.

What would you recommend?

Best regards.

Francisco.

P.S. The PDF document is a 521 pages school textbook.

Thanks for everything.

Thanks - I could only find this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2_Mt7FmRNc

Is that the one you mean? I don’t think they managed to get quite as far as working with nvda on windows as far as I can tell in that video.

It almost certainly is.  It's the 2021.X compatible version, and it's a workaround too, if memory serves.

For those interested, someone made a compatible version of Clip Speak and it was discussed on the list awhile ago.  I downloaded it and it works.  It isn’t on the official add-ons page.

Perhaps someone will give the link again.

Where can I get the latest version.

Until and unless the official developer says they're stepping away, it's not been conventional to allow those who have made temporary workarounds, however useful, to put them up in place of the original.

I am hoping that certain changes are afoot with the NVDA Add-Ons Store with regard to this.  At every backward compatibility breaking NVDA Update there should be a call to all add-on developers with a drop dead date for a response as to whether they will be updating their add-ons or not.  If not, I believe all add-ons there must be open-source under the GPL license (but I could be wrong about that), and if they are then a follow-up call for replacement maintainers could be made.

Some add-ons will die, and that's just a part of life, but for the straightforward ones that need minimal care and feeding that should be easily preventable.

I don't use Dropbox, but it seems that either they don't host stuff for long, or you choose not to keep it up there long yourself.  If you would like, and this link will become invalid in fairly short order, I am happy to host your workaround version of Enhanced Phonetic Reading on my Google Drive until the point in time when "the real one" gets made compatible with the latest NVDA.

Just let me know if you'd like me to do that.

I haven’t used the add-on that does this but if you use numpad 2 with the numlock off and press it twice when you are on a letter, does anything happen?  If you just press it once, do you hear the letter announced?  Are you using an external keyboard and what kind, USB, or other?
