Automatic speech output for interactive fiction interpreters not doing automatic speech
Felix G.
Hello everyone,
maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I'm using the automatic speech output for interactive fiction interpreters add-on, and for some reason it does not speak automatically in the Magnetic Scrolls interpreter. I've turned off pictures as the instructions suggest. I can read the text just fine using the review cursor, only the automatic speech functionality does not work. Any help is appreciated. All the best, Felix

Orbit reader
Ali Colak
Hi all,
I recently baught an orbit reader 40 braille display, and was able to connect it as a standard HID braille display, despite the instructions which said to connect it a s Vario Ultra which did not work. While everything seems to work so far as i have been able to descover, I am unable to use the panning keys and the arrow keys. Is this do to the infancy of support for orbit reader and HID in general, meaning that I'm going to have to wate for an update, or will I be able to make this work through some change in the settings? I am using Orbit Reader 40 vB1.00.00.03r25: NVDA 2021.3.1 windows version Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1415) Mainly firefox 95.0.2 Thanks Ali

Hi Milton,
No, there is no replacement for dictationBridge. However, there is an alternative solution that works differently but that may help you. See the dragon echo product at the following link.

Merry Christmas, NVDA Input Gestures Demo
Nimer Jaber
Hello everyone, First, Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. This year has been a challenging one for me, quite challenging, actually. I know this is true for many of you. Thank you so much for the support you have shown me, and each other, in this forum. Please try to stay safe, remember that we are in a pandemic, but try to be merry as well. For some, the holidays can be a tough time. You are not alone, and things will look brighter, even if it doesn't feel like it now. If you wish to reach out and need someone to talk to, please reach out to me at nimerjaber1@.... Next, BlindTechAdventures is a YouTube channel, and is the home of Nimer and Kirt, and anyone else who wishes to come on. We discuss tech, and any other topic we feel like discussing. This was called Nimer's Tech and Outdoor Adventures channel, but has been renamed. In any case, the latest video is out. It is a Christmas message, as well as a quick guide on the NVDA Input Gestures settings. Using the Input Gestures settings, I've demonstrated how to assign keyboard commands for a flattened mode of next and previous object navigation, which is the equivalent of the JAWS touch cursor, and is similar to Narrator navigation, and can help you access programs which may have accessibility challenges. I've also assigned a keyboard command to turn on and off the screen curtain. Using the steps I provide, you can change or add gestures or keyboard commands for NVDA functionality. If you like the content, please consider liking, sharing with your network, and subscribing, in order to receive additional content. If you have comments or suggestions, please send those to nimerjaber1@... or via comment on the YouTube video. If you'd like to come on to discuss tech, or you want to help with the visuals of the channel, etc., please get in touch as well. Simone,
I'm not sure if you're sending these messages by e-mail, or using the web interface to post, but if it's the latter I'd like to ask you to go to any line where you have pasted in a web address or email address, go to the end, and hit space. That will force Groups.io to convert plain text for either of these to click through links. Re: NVDA 2021.3 RC2 now available

This may help you update add-ons but I’m not sure how you might get NVDA to
update itself. Also, this solution might not be necessary any
longer. It may be better and more simple to uninstall the add-on updater
you are using and install the newest version which probably has corrected the
problem discussed here.
I gave the address of the topic and here is the page to get the latest
add-on updater. That’s what I wsould try first.

Where to get the latest version of the NVDA Advanced OCR (NAO) Add-On
Simone Dal Maso
Hello all and many Christmas!
We are proud to tell you that a new version of Nao is available. This is the last version for 2021. We have added new features and solved some bugs, here is the list: • OCR of pdf and images are presented in a new text window, with some hotkeys for simple operations; in this manner we automatically solved the incompatibility with third party addons; shortcuts are: ◦ PgUp / PgDown: move the cursor between real pages of a multipages document. ◦ P: report page number related to the cursor position, in a multipage document. ◦ l: report line number related to the cursor position, in a multipage document. ◦ c: copy all text to the clipboard. ◦ s: Save a copy of the document in text format. ◦ f: find text and read some words before and after the string. • Support for the Xplorer filemanager. • Nao shortcuts are customizable from the Input Gestures Dialog of NVDA. Open NVDA menu, go to preferences, and from that submenu select input gestures dialog. Remember that this feature is not global, but it works only where Nao can make an ocr. So gestures will appear only if you are in the desktop, or in file explorer, Total Commander or Xplorer. • Nao works only where possible, so if you are in a not supported window, the hotkey will be ignored by the addon; this solved an important issue where Excel and Word users couldn't press the NVDA-Shift-r keystroke, since it was incorrectly intercepted by Nao. • A long Ocr process can be aborted simply pressing the "Cancel" button on the progress bar window. this window also gives you information about the state of the OCR, updating informations every 5 seconds. You can configure how to receive progress bar information with the standard NVDA-u command. • Added Turkish, Russian, Spanish, Chinese and french translations. • Users can make donations to the project. • Fixed a bug with some characters on the file name that prevents the Ocr to work properly. Download it from: www.nvda-nao.org/download Please, if you find critical bugs, write an email to: support@... We hope this addon will improve your productivity. See you in 2022!

Re: I want to volunteer to update Dictation Bridge
Not that this is not appreciated, because it is, but when it comes to stepping into "developer's shoes" for NVDA Add-Ons, there is a group dedicated to just that:
NVDA Add-On Developers Group, AKA NVDA Add-Ons Central This group is focused on the development of NVDA Add-Ons. It is not an end-user support group.
I'd advise you to join there and post. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill

I want to volunteer to update Dictation Bridge
Justin Harford
Hello I have recently started studying Python. I am still working my way through the basic course on codecademy. I am looking for a project to gain more practice in the real world, and I was thinking that the dictation bridge project could be a way to contribute. I'm not exactly sure what the nature of the needed changes are, but maybe if a programmer familiar with the project could guide/mentor me, I could make a difference with my limited skills. As I understand it the syntax changed between Python 2 and Python 3, so I am guessing that there is a lot of grunt work to be done, updating the syntax of dictation bridge so that it will play nice with NVDA, a big time commitment for experienced programmers with more opportunities or more pressing priorities, but perfect for me. Anyway it could be that I still need to build some more skills, but if it's just a matter of going through and updating syntax, I might have what it takes. I have a personal interest in getting this working with the latest version, as I use it for work every day, and would like to be able to update from the old version of NVDA that I am still using. Best regards Justin Harford (he/him/his) Program Coordinator (NCDE)
