Re: Trying to find where to click to register for a master class

It should have worked in browse mode.  I tested in browse mode.  I'm not sure you can move to the text when not in forms mode because it isn't seen as a control.

If you have more than one browser, try another.

I tried pressing enter on a get instant access control both in Brave and Firefox and in both cases, I was placed in a form to enter information and submit it.

Don't assume that you can't or shouldn't try things just because a screen-reader doesn't identify some thing as clickable, a link, a button, etc. If text makes sense to try to press enter on or use the simulated mouse, in other words try different things, then try it. Using the Internet to its fullest means not assuming your screen-reader will tell you everything in terms of identifying every control as a control. Try something if it is logical to do so and you think it is safe.

Re: Trying to find where to click to register for a master class

Just as an FYI, in that page's source code, this appears to be the line used to create that non-button button.  I don't think I've ever encountered class "btn-shape" before.

<div class="btn-shape"><a data-fancybox data-src="#form" class="btn btn--md btn--yellow btn--float mx-md--auto mb-md--20 b-r--50">GET INSTANT ACCESS</a></div>

The inventions in HTML coding are still very active indeed.  [I'm sure someone will tell me, though, that btn-shape has been around forever after this.]

Re: mouse hover

Gene

I often find that on web pages, using NVDA, the mouse can't be moved to your current position.  I don't know if other screen-readers allow that.  But even if you could, it would be very cumbersome to use such a way of working in NVDA.

In JAWS, when you are on such a link, you hear mouse over announced. There is a JAWS command to do the equivalent of hovering the mouse over the link.  You are told something like, page changes at line 11.  You can then use a jump to line command to jump to that line and see what has changed.  You can, as I recall, use a return to your previous position command when you want to go back to where you were.

With NVDA, you would have to hover the mouse, and with no feed back about where the page changed, look through the page to see if you could find where the new material is.

I almost never miss information I want by not using this feature.  I can't say I don't miss any information but I have never missed the ability.  And in JAWS, I often find that mouse over links add nothing useful, maybe changing the page visually in some way in some place.

Others who use the Internet in different ways may have different opinions but I suspect that this is one of the most unneeded possible features and I suspect that that is why JAWS is the only screen-reader to have it.

Yet another example of why keeping up-to-date matters.  I've always said that old stuff eventually "becomes rickety" and it appears that even Bookworm followed that pattern as it aged.  And that's a program focused on the blind community.

The writers of that software have to "go with the ongoing flow" just like everyone else does if they wish to remain viable in the world of computing.

Interesting.  I hope you get some other reports regarding the experiences of regular BARD users on these sites with NVDA.

Re: NVDA quirk with the Bookshare Web page

Brian, Just to tie up a loose end, the same thing happens with the NLS BARD page. NVDA simply skips over the first book title heading. The only difference from one listing vs the other is that BARD uses heading 4, where Bookshare uses heading 2.

I forgot to mention, or to even remember, that I had made that particular page of new book listings into an app. I thought that might have made some kind of a difference, so I tried bringing it up within the browser itself, but this doesn't solve the problem.

Who knows, this may go toward fixing another irritation, that of links showing up from a previous page when using the next page link, but this is an entirely different issue. NVDA simply skips over the first book heading, making it necessary to shift backward to see the first book title heading.

This isn't what I would call a major issue, but simply a nuisance I hope can be fixed..

NVDA quirk with the Bookshare Web page

Larry Higgins

Listers,

I've lately noticed a quirk with NVDA when using the H to go through the book title headers, in that NVDA will ignore the very first header, and start with the second book title header, making it necessary to use the shift+H to move back to the first one. This doesn't happen with either JFW or my standby Window-Eyes. Anybody besides me notice this issue?

Thanks,

Larry

Actually, you probably won't.  If you open NVDA Settings (NVDA + N, P, S) the General Settings pane is what shows up first.  Almost centrally located in the pane are two checkboxes:
  1. Start NVDA after I sign in
  2. Use NVDA during sign-in (requires administrator privileges)   [Note: that means the account you're using must have admin privilege to use this option]

If both of those are unchecked, NVDA should not auto-start.  And those settings are associated with individual Windows user accounts.

Thank you to Brian Vogel, Shaun Everiss and Arlene,

Now I know at least how to start and quit NVDA

I will need an administrator to modify that it turns on when I start up

If you want to see something I did a screen capture of me using NVDA for the first time
