Re: Zoom Enhancements add-on
Gene
I don't know if how it works should be changed
because I almost never receive chat messages in the meetings I attend. But
it would seem to me that a sound option should be offered along with the option
to have something spoken because the member may not want to be distracted from
what is being spoken when a message comes in.
The host may want to hear who a message is from
when it comes in but an attendee who is not a host might really prefer a
sound.

In most cases, the meetings I attend and have very few chat messages as well, but this particular meeting we will be using the chat feature much more, or at least that’s what it appeared, though we did not use it as much on Sunday as I thought we would. As for interacting with the chat window though, I am not sure why anyone is suggesting changing the way that works, as I find the chat window it’s self fairly accessible, but I have no idea when to check it because I am not alerted when a message arrives.

I also don't prefer Windows event sounds too much like that.
For me though, the AudioThemes add-on quiets down on extra speech that I don't care to hear. I've been quietly working on a small audio theme of my own with random short sounds for roles (control types) in NVDA. This comes in awesome for things like list items, buttons, icons, static text, etc. -- Jason Bratcher

Re: Zoom Enhancements add-on

I think it is important to think about what the
feature should do and how it can be adjusted. I would think that, in many
cases, hearing messages read as they come in would be distracting. It
might be a good idea to give a number of ways the user can know when a message
comes in. A tone might be one way. Perhaps having the first line
read might be another, and a third might be having the whole message read.
The meetings I attend have very few messages so I haven't been able to play with
the interface much. Those who do may have mor suggestions, such as a
command to skip from message to message or maybe use some sort of commands such
as NVDA key and numbers on the main keyboard to jump to messages and a way to
read the message you jump to. But I would think that just having
information read out as it comes in would be far to restrictive in terms of what
people might want, depending on circumstances.

Look up the nvda themes sounds. It will have sounds to tell you when windows are open. Like I said I don’t use it, not anymore but when I did it worked well.

I don't understand your comments. Programs don't just open unless you take an action. If you give specific examples of where you take an action and want to know if something is opened, we might be able to give useful suggestions, but just hearing a sound, while it would tell you that something opened, wouldn’t tell you what. so what is the advantage?

Hello all,
My screen-reader skills are decent enough, but it would be nice to know when a program such as Edge or Word has opened. Right now, I have to alt-tab to find out whether the program I want has opened or not. This would also be handy when opening messages in Outlook.

All that will do is have the word link not
announced. Links will still be read however. That won't solve the
problem.
There may be some way, using the speech dictionary,
but the easiest thing to do is just down arrow when you hear it start to be
read.

Hi
these are not nvda sounds but if you type in the search box of windows sound it will come up with sound settings. Press the enter key on it then tab down to sound control panel I think it was then press the enter key again. The next screen that comes up you will then need to locate the sounds tab then go into it there it will give you options to have it when it opens a program etc.
Hope that helps. this is on a windows 10 machine.

Re: NVDA sounds
There is a theme add on, look for it on the nvda website and add ons section. I personally don’t use it as I don’t need to know when windows open, I have my screen reading skills to know this. I really don’t want my computer sounding like a video game. I must hear that when I play them lol!

Re: NVDA sounds

Not that I know of, though I may not know of such a
setting. I haven't seen one when I've looked through the program.
This may not do what you want but in Windows there
is, or there used to be and there probably still is, a setting in sounds that
will play a sound whenever a new program opens. Some windows that open are
actually new instances of the program running so you may hear the sound when you
want but others may wish to comment on that.I've never used such a setting
because it would annoy me to no end, hearing such a sound over and over
again.
