Re: Problem in the latest beta of NVDA
Iván Novegil
This is being discussed in an issue at NVDA repository. https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/11968 From there you can even download a try build with the suggested fix to test and report if it solves the issue.

Hi all, I recently updated to the latest beta version of NVDA in which I have been facing a really weerd issue. The problem is that whenever I switch my listening device from my earphone to my bluetooth headphones, the sounds that NVDA makes while entering/exiting focus/brows mode, exiting NVDA and enabling/desabling screen curtain can't be heard. I then have to restart NVDA for those sounds to return. I didn't face this particular issue in the previous versions of NVDA so I wished to ask if it is a bta related issue?

Re: problems using NVDA with my new laptop

Betsy, when using a laptop keyboard the only time you use desktop settings is if your keyboard has a numpad.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
NVDA+1 on the keyboard is a good way to locate keys. you will still need some sighted help because not all keys are labeled in a way that NVDA will recognize. An alternative is to invest in a USB keyboard or a wireless one. I say this because you will find some of your NVDA key commands fun to accomplish because many of them will require using the FN key to accomplish. thus, my suggestion of using an external keyboard.

Chris, thank you so much. I just realized because of what you
said that I needed to make sure the function keys were set to
allow home to work with F9 and somehow they had gotten reset.
Thankfully, I do not have to go into the bios to change their
function but my daughter found that I just need to do escape plus
F-end.
You all have been so helpful for me and I have taken notes to have in the future in case I forget since I have memory problems. Thank you so much to those who make this list available to those of us who need it from time to time.

Re: problems using NVDA with my new laptop
Chris Mullins
Hi Betsy The home key is used to move to the top of a list and this is a Windows key command rather than a NVDA command. One of the responses mentioned the FN key which laptops use as a modifier key to enable the addition of media keys and I suspect this is the issue here. Try switching on NVDA keyboard help mode using NVDA+1 (on the number row not the keypad). The keypresses will then be announced not actioned,so you can check if you are pressing what you think you are pressing as for example NVDA will say “Home” when you press the Home key. If “Home” is not announced then you may have to use the FN key as a modifier together with the home key to make the home key function properly. Press NVDA+1 again to return to normal keyboard entry mode.
Many manufacturers set up their machines so that media keys are the default and you have to use the FN modifier to use, for example, function keys. There is likely to be a BIOS setting that you can set to reverse this behaviour I.e. the keyboard will then behave as you are used to and you have to use the FN modifier for media key functions. Note: you will require sighted assistance to access the BIOS.
Cheers Chris

I received a new laptop and my daughter thought she had exported everything properly but a lot of the NVDA commands are not working such as going to the top of a list of emails, going to the top of a file etc. I am using Windows 10 and the NVDA is set to desktop layout.
I would definitely appreciate if someone could help me figure out what is going on.
It is an Asus laptop.
Thanks.

Also, Hareth I wanted to let you know that the command referring to using control plus F9 and or F10 worked when I pushed the F-end key with that combination. You have made my day. If you are shopping for a new version, check out amazon, I go a legal version of 2016 office pro there for about 30 bucks. They send you the key code, and you download the appropriate version from the m s store. In my experience, it is not an upgrade from 2010 to 2016 or any other version, it is a new install full prices apply, others may have a different story.

Your version number suggests you have some kind of subscription and Office 365 is the only recent offerings I know of. So, if that is the case you probably just need to login to your Microsoft account (via the File menu using that account management option) and update. I did just that about 2 weeks ago.
Compared to 2016, the latest Office has been working better in my experiences. Even the calendar is becoming more and more useable.

I want to be very clear on an issue which has risen on this list. I want to make sure my words are plain, so if you don't understand, please reach out to nvda+owner@nvda.groups.io and I will help clarify for you.
Brian has, and will continue to have my full support as a moderator of this list. I have not seen any reason why he should not enjoy my support, and I have not had anyone contact me to state why my support is misplaced. Notice I did not say anything about Brian's vision status, gender, race, or anything else. I said Brian, as a human being, enjoys my full support.
As all of us are humans, and as the world has so many issues dividing us, please, let's not allow vision, or the lack of it, dictate how we treat one another. Discrimination takes many forms, and I believe, it is no better to discriminate regarding an individual's site than it is an individual's lack of it, or an individual's skin color, ethnicity, or any other characteristic. I take this seriously, as you all should, because we have many issues going on in the world today, and I definitely believe that whether an individual has sight or not should not be one of those issues.
If you have a problem with Brian's responses because of the fact that he has vision, then I suggest you learn to lose your narrow-mindedness and find a more welcoming list for your ignorance. You could, of course, learn to use your email filters. Nonetheless, I will not tolerate any discrimination on this list, and will treat such transgressions severely. This may mean loss of posting privileges, or a ban altogether, something I do not do lightly.
I hope that the incident that happened today does not repeat itself, yet be assured that discrimination is against the NVAccess code of conduct, Groups.IO rules, this list's rules, and my personal moral code, so I hope you will all understand where I am coming from on this.

Hi Betsy,

Try using the "home" and "end" buttons for top and bottom of lists. And ctrl plus home hotkey for the top of a message and opened text file and ctrl plus end hotkey for the bottom of it, that works for some type of lists as well if the 1st one didn't work. As for the laptops Numlock key mostly you can do it with pressing the "FN" key combined with another mostly in the numbers row, and re do it to unlock its a toggle. The best and easy way to find it is to invoke the NVDA's key helper mode with hitting the NVDA plus number 1 to turn it on, and test your keys, press the same hotkey to get out of it. Happy new year to you and your family.

Re: problems using NVDA with my new laptop
Hi.
This happens because NVDA, by default and with both keyboard layouts, uses the Numpad for object navigation, screen review and review cursor functions. To use the Home, Page up, End, Page Down and other key capabilities of the Numpad, please download the add-on on this page. Read the instructions before you do, so you will be able to configure the settings to your liking. https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/numpadNavMode.en.html Cheers. Andre
