JavaScript events related to Screen reader virtual cursor
Vaibhav Saraf
Hi Community, Folks at my organization are building a toast notification for something, I know they are not good friends for many of us, but that's a different part of the story as they are doing only for cosmetic updates. The problem is that when I arrow over the notification and read it, it disappears while my virtual cursor is still on it. They have handled events to detect hover and focus to increase the timeout but nothing related to other key strokes. Are there any JS events triggered by NVDA virtual cursor when on a page which can be handled to reset the timeout in such a case? Thanks, Vaibhav

Accessible Soundboard Application
Does anyone know of a soundboard application that is accessible with NVDA?
A soundboard is usually a program that allows someone to have many little audio clips cued up and assigned to hotkeys, so they can be played instantly when their hotkey is pushed. It would be even better if said hotkeys were available globally.

Re: Reading characters phonetically

Hi Steve The numeric elements on a full size keyboard are referred to as NumPad, which is the separate keypad on the right hand side of the keyboard, and NumRow, which is the top row of the main body of keys on the keyboard. The commands you refer to use the NumRow keys, not the Function keys. Use NVDA+NumRow2 to toggle speak typed characters and NVDA+NumRow 3 to toggle speak typed words. Alternatively, use NVDA+Control+k to open the Keyboard Settings dialog, where you can set these and other keyboard related parameters.

Hi Chris. My NVDA screenreader insists on reading every character typed whereas I want to get it to say a word when the spacebar has been pressed. I tried insert key (on the number keypad) with f3 and though things had been changed ok. But unfortunately nothing seems to have changed and now if I try insert key with f3 nothing happens. Any help please? Cheers, Steve

Hi In addition to what Luke described, pressing NumPad 5 3 times will spell out the current word, NumPad 8 3 times will spell out the current line, both phonetically. Cheers Chris Sent from Mail for Windows 10

If your cursor is on the character, or the review cursor is, pressing the numpad 2 key twice (desktop mode), will read the character phonetically.
If you want it to just read phonetically if you pause on a character while using the arrow keys, like iOS Voiceover does in character mode, there is an add-on for that, although I can't find it currently.

Re: Signal desktop

Hi,

If you need to use Signal Desktop to perform a task, it's possible. But Current experience is worse than Whatsapp app. With the shortcut keys of the application, it becomes easier to focus on areas such as chat, message history and to perform some tasks; but even that doesn't save the situation from being completely bad. Since each of the message history items is a separate focusable item, it is possible to navigate the messages with the arrow keys, while the tab key navigates over the messages instead of navigating between these sections. Areas that are not active in use are visible on the screen and there are a few key audio issues. Hello, A little while ago I looked at this. I have now produced my own guide to assist anybody wishing to use nvda with a braille display. It includes commands I have learned myself and those in the input gestures section of nvda settings. Its my first attempt at a subject I am still keen to learn more about. However using these commands I can now control my pc with a braille display alone. The guide is attached for anybody on this group to use. Kind regards, Dennis huckle.

Re: Welsh language voices
Gloomy_Apple <jackie.ysbiwr@...>
Not a Welsh native, but a learner. From what I see the
situation looks quite sad. There used to be two Welsh voices from
Ivona - Geraint and Gwyneth - in both a Welsh-language (South) and
Welsh English version. I used to have them for a long time but
then lost them irretrievably. Can't say a whole lot about how
authentic their Welsh was, because mine was too much beginner at
the time, but I think Ivona was generally fairly good at the
linguistic aspect of their voices. Now that the company has been
taken by Amazon years ago, the voices can be no longer purchased
directly from them for Sapi5 though and are no longer supported.
There are some places where you can get them, like from
HarpoSoftware, but when I tried demos they seemed rather buggy. And then we have Espeak, which is not surprisingly not very
authentic-sounding in Welsh at all. I guess I've once heard that
there was a Welsh Festival voice but never heard it or tested it
and I generally don't have much experience with Festival at all.
And that's it, as far as I know. If someone else knows more, I'd be happy to hear as well. I am sort of silently hoping for CereProc to make the move
now, as they are a Scottish company who have already created
Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic voices, as well as many regional
dialect British voices so why not Welsh. As a North Welsh learner
I think it would be particularly fun to have the voices for these
two dialects, but that's probably a total utopia for now. W dniu 15.06.2021 o 00:20, Louder Pages

Hi, Mo, have tried all these but none seem to work.
On a separate issue, my brother came and installed the set-top-box you kindly sent to me. I have been having some problems with some stations keep saying ‘no signal’ but on a cursory glance at the Freeview site I note there is work taking place on the Waltham transmitter which is the one my box is using.
Thanks, Steve Thacker

Hi. You need to press insert and the number 2 on the top number row to turn reading of characters off. then press insert number 3 to turn on the reading of words if you haven't already done so. I hope this helps? Cheers, Mo.
