Re: NVDA - Inconsistent Behavior when working with MS-Outlook

Hi Matt, Does the NVDA announce 'actionable message' when your colleague taps down to the message body from the header? (after load) I use Office 365 but this occurs sometimes with me especially on auto-generated mails which take a while to load. If I start moving my keys instantly on those messages I will get a similar issue, but if I wait a few secs and let it load properly it renders fine. Thanks, Vaibhav

Hi Brian
Yes I am aware of this method to define column and row headings. I just do not understand why this method is necessary for having column headings announced in a simple table in Excel. Both Jaws and Narrater (I think) will announce Excel table column headings without first manually defining them.
Anyway thanks a lot for your reply Brian.

Also have a look at the topic on this group entitled, Is there a way to turn off announcement of table column and row headings?. It's the flip-side of your issue and the settings mentioned are toggled either on or off.

NVDA - Inconsistent Behavior when working with MS-Outlook
mpeters@...
Greetings,
I am a IT guy trying to find solutions for a colleague who uses NVDA. A quick history. My colleague was first introduced to NVDA about a year ago when his computer was upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 10. This required a new screen reader solution which is when I found NVDA. He started using NVDA with relatively few issues and it was running well for the last year. He predominantly uses the desktop for email and OCR tasks so I had Office 2016 and Kurzweil 1000 installed. Recently his computer needed replacement so I set him up with a new computer with Windows 10 release 19042 and Office 2019. We immediately had issues with Outlook. Most of the issues revolve around opening of the email message. Initially I thought this may be due to the Office 2019 install so I rolled it back to Office 2016. This helped a little but issues still exist. One example that started today rather abruptly was that NVDA would read the header information for the message that was opened but would not read the body. I found that I could get some read by right clicking the mouse then left clicking, but that would only read the line the cursor was on. I’ve tried restarting both NVDA and Outlook as well as the computer without any success. I feel like I may not have Outlook or NVDA configured properly. Could anyone provide some insight on what maybe happening and any steps I could take towards rectifying it?

NVDA not reading column headings in Excel tables
lhs@...
Hi all
When I create tables, e.g. with “Ctrl + t” in Excel and mark that the table has column headings, I would expect that NVDA should read these column headings when navigating the table. Yet my NVDA just read the cell content and not the column headings. For the same table my Jaws do read the column headings when navigating horizontal in the table. Am my expectation wrong, when I expect NVDA to read the column headings or do I miss a setting somewhere?

Re: PowerPoint: reading tables in presentation view

Hi, in the presentation mode unfortunately NVDA ignores many objects, like it is not even there, on the other hand, you have to use presentation mode to read the slide notes with ctrl shift s. Furthermore, if the file is in the protected mode, you have to battle to get it reading, what I do is that I move the mouse with nvda+ numpad divide, then I press right click (numpad star). However this works sometimes and sometimes I have to close and reopen etc, others just disable the protected mode. Thanks. Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Hi all,
I second third and whatever number that request for better powwerpoint support. I need to use the program all the time and NVDA’s support is significantly lacking. I have not tried jaws and narrator.
One problem is tables as has already been highlighted in this thread. The next issue is the reporting of object and slide alignment. I need to know if all elements on a slide are visible. Yes, we do get that announcement but suppose I have a table obscured by a picture, where should I move the picture to make sure that both the table and picture are visible?
The last issue is playing media in slide show mode. I cannot activate any media in slide show mode.
There is training material on Powerpoint from nvaccess but it does not cover the above points. Pranav

Thank you, Ben and Eilana.
I agree, I think it would be good if we had better PowerPoint support. When I went to uni 10-15 years ago, I hardly ever had to use PowerPoint. Now I started another course and have to work through several presentations a week. And may be in business contexts, PowerPoint has been more widely used for a longer time.

I appologize for any confusion. I think that most of the add-ons I
have are compatible with the latest version of NVDA , and they were listed as
being compatible with NVDA 2019.3 or later. I don’t know if “Add-on
Updater” will let me install the “Clock and Calendar” add-on because of
compatibility.
Thanks,

Will there be updates to make it compatible with the latest version of NVDA?- Anything that is on the NVDA Stable Add-Ons page should be compatible with whatever the current version of NVDA happens to be. There are plenty of times where the lines about the versions a given add-on will work with do not get updated in a timely manner. But it is my understanding that the add-ons are tested as a part of the natural testing for NVDA as it's being developed, and if a given add-on doesn't work its developer will "have their cage rattled" to fix it and, if not fixed, it will be pulled from the stable add-ons page. I'm sure I'll be corrected on that if it's wrong. But anything compatible with 2019 should remain compatible with 2020, dot numbers not relevant in this case. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 Always remember others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. Thank you for asking your friend about this. I have done the same and my friend using Adobe DC Pro said she couldn't see the tags in the PDF. Strange that our friends are saying different things. Anyway, before I read your mail, I wrote to Microsoft and will report back if they say anything interesting.

Re: suddenly object review quit working like it should
Yep I have obj pad, love it. At the time though screen review was not even working, like no cursers were even lining up. It sort of seems to be working, at least in outlook, kind of except it gets stuck int the bcc field. I won’t worry about it for now though. I have an event to run tomorrow so I really hope this will be fixed by then.

Sarah, first thing I would check is if your keyboard input language hasn't changed by accident - keystroke combinations like either left alt + shift, or windows key + space bar can make this occur if you possibly have more than one language installed under win 10.
Secondly, make sure that if you turn on input help, and then press something like numpad insert + numpad 4, it reports that that keystroke is bound to navigating to the previous navigator object?
Secondly, if you have the obj pad add-on installed, you could try using the NVDA + ctrl + tab keystroke to cycle through it's navigation modes, since when it's set to object navigation mode instead of normal mode, you can use just normal cursor keys to try out forms of object navigation?
Here it is: https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/objPad.en.html
Good luck

I can’t test on a machine that is not misbehaving. I don’t have one. I could make a fresh portable copy though next time. I’ll be keeping an eye on this. I don’t recall turning off these numrow 6 and numrow 7 settings but now that I have an almost working copy, I’ll be making a back up and putting it somewhere.

Try uninstalling NVDA, restarting the computer, and reinstalling it afterward, too. You may need either Narrator or a portable copy of NVDA to do that. Question about compatibility of "Clock and calendar add-on"
Louise Pfau
Hi. I looked for the "Clock and calendar" add-on on the official add-ons page, and the compatibility is for NVDA 2019.2. Based on the description, I wanted to get it, but I'm using NVDA 2020.4. Will there be updates to make it compatible with the latest version of NVDA?
Thanks, Louise
