Could you get your student to find the NVDA entry on the Desktop then press Alt+enter. This will open the properties window for the shortcut where you can tab to the shortcut hotkey key

There is a setting in Windows 10 and I don't recall if it prevents short cuts from being placed on the desktop or if it prevents short cut keys from being assigned. I haven't seen it discussed for

Have you restarted the computer?
All triggering of programs via shortcuts is handled via Windows, so the issue lies there. Sometimes a restart is all it takes to clear whatever "constipation" Windows

Hitting the hotkey twice in quick succession works most of the times,
if once didn't.

I am using office365, Confirm that this problem exists. The content of the start menu will not be read after closing Word. It also won't read the contents of Explorer. Reopening Word will not read.

Any time you connect a USB sound card, it is the default. there is no reason to do this for playback settings. In terms of recording settings, you set a specific source as the default, not the entire

Press the windows key plus R to open the run dialogue.
Enter the following into the text field without the quotes. “control /name microsoft.sound”
Press enter or tab to the OK button

Have you gone into NVDA Preferences > Settings > Speech then click
'synthesizer & press the 'change' button. At this point, you can set a
default card for NVDA.

I have been using windows since it’s beginnings and never heard of control shift ane escape. I’ve always used alt control delete. Thanks for the alternative method.

Well this issue happens on an exit command from word 2019.
It doesn't happen on 2016.
Word exits, it maybe taking time to do so though powering narator at the point word exits shows it has in deed

I tried sophos home but because of those false positives, the program went through my drive and other things and deleted everything that was bad.
As you can imagine, I had a nice long load of errors,
