Any time you connect a USB sound card, it is the default. there is no reason to do this for playback settings. In terms of recording settings, you set a specific source as the default, not the entire

Try this.
Press the windows key plus R to open the run dialogue.
Enter the following into the text field without the quotes. “control /name microsoft.sound”
Press enter or tab to the OK button

Have you gone into NVDA Preferences > Settings > Speech then click
'synthesizer & press the 'change' button. At this point, you can set a
default card for NVDA.

I have been using windows since it’s beginnings and never heard of control shift ane escape. I’ve always used alt control delete. Thanks for the alternative method.

Well this issue happens on an exit command from word 2019.
It doesn't happen on 2016.
Word exits, it maybe taking time to do so though powering narator at the point word exits shows it has in deed

I tried sophos home but because of those false positives, the program went through my drive and other things and deleted everything that was bad.
As you can imagine, I had a nice long load of errors,

We have windows defender.
That aparently is actually quite crappy now but with so many false positives who knows now days.
