What command are you using? You said it doesn't continuously read properly. What does it do? Also, what command do you use in other programs such as Word or Wordpad. It's the same command.

Try unchecking NVDA's reporting of tables. the first time I press NVDA + Numpad 4 NVDA says "Select Columns to Display button". After that the column headers come.

Once you have set autoread going, you can use the shift key like a pause button. Press it to stop the speech, press it again to resume speech from where you left off.
