That isn’t what I was referring to.  I was referring to changing the word options to settings.  Changing this one word will create an enormous amount of work for the volunteers who write and keep help articles current.

The setting is part of the general section, so it should be reachable without any extra steps.

I agree that these changes sometimes seem unnecessarily, but to be fair: Firefox has now been like this for quite a long time, at least since the advent of Quantum, and it reflects the way a lot of things look on mobile devices – and as everything is going multiplatform, this is just what we are seeing across the board nowadays. Once you get the hang of it, it’s not too inconvenient. The sections of various headings you see are controlled by a list box, and you just pick the category in the list box you want, and the headings with options will appear.

You can control updates.  You may have to turn browse mode off to see the part of the options or settings dialog where you select the category you will work with.

Previously, the update selection was found in options.  In a change in the current version, there is no more options.  Now, its settings.  Its in the tools folder still but the name was changed.  Just one more unnecessary change to momentarily confuse people and require that all support documentation that mentioned options be rewritten.  Do program developers ever consider what amount of useless and needless work some of their completely unnecessary changes impose on people?

I’m not singling out Firefox developers but this is an example of how a change in one word can cause a great deal of work.

There is no more updates section as a separate section in settings.  it is now in the general settings, which is the one you work with by default when you open settings.  Tab and tab and tab and you will eventually get to a series of radio buttons for determining update behavior.

I've tried both w/the NVDA beta as well as the stable version, folks.

It's broken on my system, & that includes w/Narrator & Jaws also.

That may be, I haven’t checked but you don’t have to accept updates so it is just as effective as turning them off.

When you get the message you may issue the command alt n.  And you don’t even have to do that, you can ignore the message and it will remain on screen and do nothing.

That's not accurate, Chris. There are options in Firefox to choose
when to install updates.

It is possible that eventaully the update will just install anyway, however there is a button to activate in settings/general that lets you choose to not update firefox automatically (it does *check8 for updates automatically, but does not install them it seems). It’s lucky I checked this button, too, as apparently my update to v.89 already downloaded, and was just waiting for me to restart the browser to install. There was a “discard” button, which I activated, cancelling the update.

Hi,

Seems I also have this problem - it worked fine the first time after installation but once firefox got closed and started again, I only got unknown elements.
as said here already,Starting with profile manager seems to solve it, though, so if it not already by default, launching "firefox -ProfileManager" then unChecking automatic profile loading should be enough to work around it.

Seems it is a purely firefox-related problem,
so complaints and bug report should be sent to mozilla if we want a real fix.

Set the browser to notify you when updates are available but not to automatically update.  Perhaps updates aren’t sent to all users simultaneously but since you may be updated at any time, you may want to disconnect from the Internet before you run Firefox and make this change.  Also, as I’ve said, to keep safe with current security updates, you can use the ESR version.

So, how long before we all get v.89 unless we take steps not to update. Don't want to be caught unawares before this happens.

I've tried both w/the NVDA beta as well as the stable version, folks.
It's broken on my system, & that includes w/Narrator & Jaws also.

Interestingly, if I start firefox when choosing a profile every time,

even did a reset think that would help, no such luck there. In fact
I did load jaws, nothing there. Could someone tell us what is going

The other person who reported the probloem said she couldn’t use Narrator with Firefox either.  Whatever the problem is, it isn’t an NVDA problem.

it isn’t a good idea to use old browsers.  If you don’t want to get the update, you should use the ESR version.

Hi, Is this with the NVDA beta? I’m not using it. But I got the older version. I don’t have it here. If there’s problems with it I wont bother with it.

One other person reported the problem.  But if you don’t get this update, when will you decide its safe to get one?  You may want to get the ESR release.

Hello. I am experiencing the same thing with NVDA, I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox, ran the calm registration tool, created a new profile, still nothing and did a system file check, did not find anything. According to the scan everything was fixed on my windows10 home machine. That is the one I am on right now writing out the email. Whenever I go to the website just to give you an example cbsnews.com, I load it on to firefox and getting unknown message whenever I tab around the page think it loads, whenever I press the arrow keys it says unknown, am tabbing around again it comes up with unknown but am not sure what is going on, but when I am going in to the help section, I have to run the trouble shoot mode, it restarts in trouble shoot mode everything is fine when am on a website so what is going on here? I am not on a network of any kind just your typical modem from Cox.com using a wired connection. However I do have a second machine windows10 pro 64 bit and both the home machine and the pro machine have everything up to date and are running 64 bit, it is weird on the windows10 pro I did not have to do anything firefox works great on that one verses the home machine. I can not figure out why I have to restart firefox in trouble shoot mode on the windows home machine. I even did a reset think that would help, no such luck there. In fact I did load jaws, nothing there. Could someone tell us what is going on here? Thank you.
