There isn't an NVDA setting for that. Theoretically it could be possible with an add-on, but I can't think of one which does it.

There are a couple of things you can do to regularly check the word count, which is displayed in the status bar:

1) Press F6 to jump to the status bar. There are a number of other values here, so next press the right arrow to move to word count. Press SHIFT+F6 to move back to the document. Next time you press F6, the focus will jump straight to word count.

2) Press NVDA+end (NVDA+shift+end if using laptop keyboard layout). This reads the status bar. As noted, there are a number of other pieces of information here. While you can't reorder them, you can remove things you don't want. Again, press F6 to move to the status bar then the applications key to open the context menu. Press the down arrow to move through the list and spacebar to check and uncheck any items. Note that the state of the checkbox isn't reported. This is a known issue, but for now you'll just have to remember what is and isn't checked. If you would like to comment on the issue, it is this one: <https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/5996>https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/5996

What program were you using to read the file?
Acrobat reader, Edge, some browser plugin, what?

Where did the PDF come from, and is it public so we can review it? If so, where in the PDF does this start to happen?

It's probably some encoding problem with the PDF--I find that very technical user manuals (I'm looking at you, Furman) often have similar very short line problems.

Hello everyone,

I am coming to you as an unhappy, upset owner. I very rarely come to you in this state, but the reputation of this list is on the line. It is not acceptable, ever, to discuss or hint at illegal versions of software on this list. It is not acceptable to hint at emailing such copies of illegal software on this list. A number of messages were provided on legal methods for obtaining Eloquence by purchase, and the thread should have ended there. Any future discussion regarding emailing illegal copies of Eloquence are uncalled for, and go to the heart of the reputation of NVAccess, NVDA, and our community, as well as violating the Groups.io terms of service.

Any future hint at sending or receiving of illegal Eloquence or any other software on this list will be met with a revocation of posting privileges. This is a serious issue, and I will treat it as such.

Should you have questions, you are not welcome to respond on list. Please send your queries to nvda+owner@nvda.groups.io so that we can discuss it off list, and have a cuppa tea. Discussion of the illegal add-on is not allowed on the list, and I would suggest Chris, that also goes for chatter about emailing each other offlist about distributing it...

What I would say on-list though is that there are several very good reasons why you should consider NOT using the illegal add-on:

- It's not legal.  Nuance own the right to Eloquence and they can set the price for it.  They have decided to charge a per-license fee for it.  For those who purchase Jaws, part of the cost of Jaws goes towards that fee.  For those who use NVDA who would like Eloquence, you can purchase it through CodeFactory.  If you don't like the cost, then use OneCore or eSpeak-NG or find another cheap or free synth (and if you do, please let me know about it, so we can include it on the Extra Voices page: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/ExtraVoices )

- It's not supported and not stable. Even if you're willing to steal software, the fact the illegal add-on invariably causes stability and performance issues is a very compelling reason not to use it.

As noted in the first point, do please check out https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/ExtraVoices for a list of additional voices (both commercial and free) you might consider using with NVDA.  And if you do find something else which isn't listed on there, please do let us know so we can add it there and others can find it too.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: comment section in you tube is not displaying

Interesting, I specifically can't get to the "add a public comment" edit with e - the only edit box NVDA sees is the search edit up the top - and that's even if I'm on my avatar next to the comment edit, so I know it's loaded.  I wondered if it was that it hadn't loaded and so NVDA hadn't seen it, but a) NVDA can navigate to it and read "Edit add a public comment", but even if I refresh NVDA's buffer at that point, it still can't find it.

Chrome seems by far to give the best youtube experience for me. I find firefox to be a little unmanageable on youtube and slow, and I don't use any other chromium-based browsers currently to determine whether they work as well as Google Chrome.

I suspect there is something wrong with Youtube.  On another list there is discussion that comments canbe be seen with Edge but not with one or two other browsers.

Also, because the person asking the question has been seeing them before and something must have changed.

I tried looking for comments on a page and I didn't find them even though I skimmed down the page to allow it to change.

Although there is something which acts like an edit field to "add a public
comment", it's done in such a way that it isn't actually a traditional edit
field, so you can't find it by navigating by edit field or even form field.
The best way I've found to get to it is:

1. Press NVDA+control+f to open NVDA's find function.
2. Type the word "comments" (without quotes)
3. Press ENTER to move to the first instance of the word.
4. Press TAB twice to move past "Sort by" and onto the edit field.

I have found that sometimes everything hasn't loaded and it can't find
comments.  In this case, escape the error dialog, press CONTROL+END to jump
to the bottom of the page, then up arrow and it's usually actually at the
comments - YouTube seems to load the video and then related / suggested
videos, then after that the comments, and sometimes it doesn't load the
comments until you actually scroll down to the bottom of the page to get to
them.

I say the following not to disparage either Disability Services Offices at colleges nor blind students, but it really is important to keep the following in mind:

1. There are lots of Disability Services Offices that have individuals running them or on "the front line" that have very little experience in the field.  And I can say that from having had to teach folks I would have assumed would know about screen readers in some detail the basics.  There are also smaller schools (and several exist in my area) where a blind student is, relatively speaking, rare.

2. What was the experience level of the students being used as reference points with screen readers prior to using Blackboard?  I have had pitched battles with several schools about setting up sandbox systems for blind and visually impaired students to "play with" before they actually have to use Blackboard for real course management task.  I have had a number of students (as a tutor) who are trying to learn to use a screen reader at the same time as they're trying to learn to use Blackboard at the same time they're trying to absorb the course material.  Let me say that it generally doesn't go smoothly.

When it comes to #2, make sure you know that you're comparing like to like skill level to get a realistic sense of what may be the situation for you.  If you're a skilled screen reader user Blackboard is, by and large, just another web based application.

I used Blackboard for a university course in 2018/19 and it worked fine. There are a few website articles about people's experiences of using Blakboard with screen-reading software, and the verdict is that it usually depends on how the university have configured their version of Blackboard. Some universities do it well, and others don't!

If your school has a disability office, they should be able to tell you whether other blind students have had any difficulties with Blackboard. Good luck with your course(s) :)

I agree with all of the suggestions mentioned on this thread and would
like to add one more thing. People who post videos on YouTube have the
option to not have comments show for that video, also, they can have
them on and for any reason they can turn them off. This info doesn't
apply to one browser showing comments and another hiding them, as
YouTube doesn't discriminate against any choice of browser.

Does anyone could noticed in the youtube website the comment section is
not displaying. Well, this is the second time I noticed this and
observing and tried to shift to different browser but no luck.

Re: comment section in you tube is not displaying

I usually use Chrome on youtube. What I do is open a video. I hit the letter e twice, and this puts me directly in the comment field. This seems to have become more rather than less reliable lately (the comment field seems to have been moved on the video pages by youtube, but I’m not quite sure of its new position on the screen, if any.)

I have found that sometimes everything hasn't loaded and it can't find
comments. In this case, escape the error dialog, press CONTROL+END to jump
to the bottom of the page, then up arrow and it's usually actually at the
comments - YouTube seems to load the video and then related / suggested
videos, then after that the comments, and sometimes it doesn't load the
comments until you actually scroll down to the bottom of the page to get to
them.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: How to use eventHandler.requestEvents

Hi,

I see. Do you know if this event is mapped to an existing NvDA event? One way to find out is running AccEvent, part of Windows SDK tools. If not, it will involve some runtime under the hood changes to let NvDA recognize this event (not sure how to do this for Microsoft Active Accessibility, but it’s a bit involved in UI Automation; based on Windows 10 App Essentials add-on source code in front of me, it involves runtime manipulation of UIA events map; at least that’s the high-level overview, so let’s discuss this on a different list).

Cheers,

Joseph

"focusChanged" is an SAP event, not a NVDA event. I want NVDA to be able to listen to this SAP event and handle it the same way as NVDA handles it own events.
I think I misunderstand not only requestEvents but also some other event related stuff in NVDA, so I'll check your suggested example and lurk around in the suggested groups to figure out what I actually want.

Thanks Brian and Joseph! I think both groups are interesting to look around in.
