Same here.  I also don't expect them to be "intuitive sounds," per se, just something that occurs when a specific state is transitioned into, item is landed on, or similar.

Are you saying you know the link you are looking for?  If so, you can use the same find command you use when browsing since you are using browse mode when reading e-mail.  or I should say, whhen I think its very likely you are using browse mode to read e-mail.

After you get to the link, try shift tabbing once or twice then tabbing once or twice to the link.  let us know if that method works well.  there are some instances when browse mode doesn’t line up properly with where you are on the underlying page and when you tab, you are nowhere near the link even if browse mode is on it.

Also, for those learning NVDA, I don’t think sound should be used.  Repetition is important in learning and hearing actual words would help those learning both become more aware of the terms and perhaps be more aware of when they are in which mode.

NVDA space toggles browse mode off and on.  But if you are using sound for the notification, I don’t know which sound means what and I don’t like using sounds instead of speech in such ways.  I have NVDA set to say browse mode when it is on and focus mode when it is off.  If you want to change from sound to speech, I’ll explain how to do it.

Also, by default, NVDA automatically changes from Browse Mode to focus mode and back again depending on what structures you move to in a web page and how you move.

I am very much against this being default behavior.  I think it is confusing to new students of NVDA and causes them to concentrate on learning when the automatic changes occur when what they should be concentrating on is when to use which mode.  Manually changing from mode to mode, in my opinion, helps create understanding and helps concentration be on what it should be on, not a secondary consideration.

You can change this behavior as well, if you want.

sorry I also forgot to mention that before you get this, go on over to www.ninite.com and check the box that says 7zip then get a 7zip ninite and let it install. once 7zip is installed, you can download the ttsdata.jar file from that ftp site, unzip with 7zip, inside the .jar file you just unzipped is the IBM-tts setup file so just install that, then install the NVDA addon, then go in and choose IBM-tts as your synthesizer and it works and works quite well I might add. and this is all legal and publically available stuff, completely open public ftp and websites.

Re: is there a way to copy a link from the body of an email?

Chris Mullins

                Hi Betsy

It is the FN key which acts as a modifier key when used in conjunction with another key to activate a function.  It sounds like  FN+RightControl is simulating the “Applications” key in this case.  I use a full size USB keyboard and the applications key is to the left of the right control key but on many laptop keyboards, the applications key is missing and the FN+another key is used to simulate it’s function.

Cheers

Subject: [nvda] NVDA 2021.1 and Joseph Lee's add-ons: seven add-ons updated, important notices on some add-ons #AddonRelease

Hi all,

I’m delighted to announce the immediate release of stable channel updates to the following add-ons (compatible with NVDA 2021.1; beta 1 is out so far, manual installation required until further notice):

  • Control Usage Assistant:

Version: 21.06

Download link: https://github.com/josephsl/controlUsageAssistant/releases/download/21.06/controlUsageAssistant-21.06.nvda-addon

Changes: localization updates (it’s been many months since a localization update took place).

  • Enhanced Touch Gestures:

Version: 21.06

Download link: https://github.com/josephsl/enhancedTouchGestures/releases/download/21.06/enhancedTouchGestures-21.06.nvda-addon

Changes: localization updates.

  • GoldWave:

Version: 21.06 (EOL: end of life from current maintainer)

Download link: https://github.com/josephsl/goldWave/releases/download/21.06/goldwave-21.06.nvda-addon

Changes: localization updates.

Note: GoldWave add-on 21.06 is the last version of the add-on from me.

  • ObjPad (out of band emergency update):

Version: 21.06

Download link: https://github.com/josephsl/objPad/releases/download/21.06/objPad-21.06.nvda-addon

Changes: localization updates (more than a year’s worth of updates, including new translations)

Note: I stopped maintaining ObjPad in January 2020; in consideration for compatibility changes, version 21.06 is an out of band emergency update. Future versions are not guaranteed.

  • Resource Monitor:

Version: 21.06

Download link: https://github.com/josephsl/resourceMonitor/releases/download/21.06/resourceMonitor-21.06.nvda-addon

Changes: localization updates.

  • StationPlaylist:

Version: 21.06

Download link: https://github.com/josephsl/stationPlaylist/releases/download/21.06/stationPlaylist-21.06.nvda-addon

Changes:

• NVDA will no longer do nothing or play error tones when trying to open various add-on dialogs such as encoder settings dialog. This is a critical fix required to support NVDA 2021.1.

• NVDA will no longer appear to do nothing or play error tones when trying to announce complete time (hours, minutes, seconds) from Studio (command unassigned). This affects NVDA 2021.1 or later.

  • Windows 10 app Essentials:

Version: 21.06

Download link: https://github.com/josephsl/wintenApps/releases/download/21.06/wintenApps-21.06.nvda-addon

Changes:

• NVDA 2020.4 or later is required.

• The following UIA events were renamed to make them consistent with actual UI Automation event names: drag target enter to drop target enter, drag target leave to drop target leave, drag target dropped to drop target dropped.

• Modern keyboard: in build 21300 and later, with focus mode active from places such as web browsers, NVDA will no longer announce blank when using the arrow keys to navigate among emojis.

• Modern keyboard: when pressing Escape key to close emoji panel or clipboard history in build 21300 and later, focus will move back to the control you were working on before modern keyboard interface was opened. In some cases, Escape key should be pressed twice.

Note: WinTenApps 21.06 is the last version compatible with Windows 10 Version 2004 (May 2020 Update/build 19041).

IMPORTANT NOTES (PLEASE READ):

  1. If you haven’t, install Add-on Updater 21.05.1 BEFORE applying these add-on updates.
  2. Until further notice, these add-on updates must be applied manually. I’ll send a follow-up notice when community add-ons website is updated to host new add-on updates.
  3. After installing these updates, if Add-on Updater prompts you to install what may appear to be older add-on releases, ignore it. If you are using NVDA 2021.1 beta 1 or recent alpha snapshots, add-on updates through Add-on Updater will fail because older add-on releases are not compatible.
  4. GoldWave: version 21.06 is the last version of this add-on under my maintenance.
  5. ObjPad: version 21.06 is an out of band update specifically designed for compatibility. Future releases are not guaranteed as it is no longer maintained by me.
  6. Control Usage Assistant, Enhanced Touch Gestures, StationPlaylist: version 21.06 is the second to last version of these add-ons under my maintenance. A localization focused release will be made toward end of summer, at which point I will end maintenance of these add-ons.
  7. Resource Monitor: version 21.06 is one of the last releases of these add-ons, with the last release under my maintenance scheduled for end of this year. I’m waiting for Windows Server 2022 to be finalized before recording the final build in this add-on.
  8. Windows 10 App Essentials: version 21.06 (codenamed “iron”) is the last version compatible with Windows 10 Version 2004 (May 2020 Update). The next major release (codenamed “cobalt”) will require Version 20H2 (October 2020 Update) or later. Also, for support policy, WinTenApps 21.06 requires NVDA 2020.4, 2021.1 prerelease (beta included), and alpha snapshots (Windows 10 App Essentials supports current/2021.1 (starting from beta), immediate past/2020.4, and development versions of NVDA). Those running WinTenApps add-on development snapshots are already running parts of “cobalt” and what could become early “nickel 1” releases (more on “nickel 1” codename later).

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

The closest thing I could describe ass would be and artificial camera shutter sound, as somebody described  it earlier. I have used mechanical typewriters, electromechanical typewriters, and electronic keyboards of all varieties, and never have any of them sounded like that.

That said, I have stayed out of this one because I am generally in favor of earcons, as long as they are optional. I have enough things talking to me all day, it is a pleasure to get context from something other than an artificial voice. But I’m not saying anything new on this so I will shut up again.

I tried uninstalling, restoring and trying again.

Same thing, I tried on my asus desktop which had the update, it didn't happen and everything worked as expected.

In the short to medium term even long term its not bad, I have latest drivers for my display and chipset, as well as audio according to hp which is realtech.

The update and restart and update and shutdown boxes exist, but its not like the system aint going to run.

As long as I can install updates manually I guess it will be ok.

One thing's for sure though I will hold off on updating my media backups, those are 20h2 or 2004 and probably I don't need to bother updating them I guess.

Not ssure what I will do.

One thing I will not do is ring microsoft tech support.

The system works, it boots and its not broken.

NVDA and Visual Studio 2019, streamlining the workflow

Felix G.

Dear NVDA community,
I have spent the last few days preparing a programming assignment for
students of a computer science class, and since it is a C programming
assignment, and I am a Windows user, I chose to use Visual Studio for
the task at hand. I am noticing, however, that this endeavour is
hampered by Visual Studio and NVDA going out of sync on a regular
basis. For instance, it appears the cursor is stuck somewhere in the
code editor, but upon inspection I find focus has changed to another
VS component, and this focus change was apparently not taken into
account by NVDA. Repeated alt+tabbing out of and back into VS tends to
solve the problem, with the emphasis resting firmly on "repeated,"
meaning it gets tedious after some time. Often after alt+tabbing into
VS, when I press NVDA+t to find out the window title, NVDA says
"Explorer" by which it is presumably referring to some part of the
scaffolding of how Windows handles its window management.
Could someone please point me to the current recommended standard
practice for doing C or C++ development when depending on NVDA? Is
there anything in VS that needs to be configured to make it behave
acceptably with NVDA?
Thank you and all the best,
Felix

• NVDA will no longer do nothing or play error tones when trying to open various add-on dialogs such as encoder settings dialog. This is a critical fix required to support NVDA 2021.1.

• NVDA will no longer appear to do nothing or play error tones when trying to announce complete time (hours, minutes, seconds) from Studio (command unassigned). This affects NVDA 2021.1 or later.

  • Windows 10 app Essentials:

Version: 21.06

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

I also tried this using Joseph's STR, and could not replicate this problem.
It announced the time automatically. It announced it manually with numpad 5.
In no case was it slow or inaccurate or late.

I think this is the system in question, not NVDA.

I tested with 2020.4 and 2021.1 beta. Windows 20H2.

I tried:
1. Start NVDA (under Windows 10 Version 21H1 build 19043.1023).
2. Press Windows+B to go to notification area.
3. Press right arrow until arriving at clock icon.
4. Wait five minutes.

Expected behavior: NVDA announces time changes.
Actual: NVDA announces time changes.
I guess this might be unique to your system unless others report similar issues.
