Re: table navigation issues

Lots of apps report tables but NVDA doesn't work with them.

Re: NVDA Goes Silent When Working with Outlook 2016 - Where does the fault lie?
Christo,
I have retitled your post for both clarity and archive maintenance purposes. I hope that someone will be able to assist in figuring this issue out. That being said, it has been asked that logs not be posted to the group, and I would ask you, and all members, to refrain from doing so in the future. If an assistant needs a log or log segment, they will request it and it should be sent privately. There are many times when NVDA logs can contain information that would be sensitive and that the end user would really not want to have out in public, and they'd have no way of knowing it's even there, and this is why we do not want public posting of full logs or log segments. That, and there are mighty few members who have the expertise to interpret them, too. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 If you think that you can think about a thing, inextricably attached to something else, without thinking of the thing it is attached to, then you have a legal mind. ~ Thomas Reed Powell

NVDA Goes Silent When Working with Outlook 2016 - Where does the fault lie?
Christo Vorster
Good day Group
From time to time I find that NVDA keeps quiet while I work in MS Outlook 2016. When I press ALT-Tab twice it start speaking again, but it only reads the message my cursor is on. I copied the view log, hopefully someone can tell me whether it is a NVDA or Microsoft problem.
The log look as follows:

You can browse to the direct download link of the driver from the main website as far as I'm aware. The only way to get the driver is to use this direct link: https://www.tiflotecnia.net/Instal/vocalizer_expressive_driver-3.1.2.nvda-addon

Signing PDF documents with NVDA
Ali Savas
Hi Community,
with the adobe Reader it is possible to sign PDF documents. Unfortunately I have not found a way to do this with NVDA yet. Sighted people have to drag the signature into the correct field. Is there an accessible way to sign PDF documents with NVDA? Thank you very much for your answer and have a wonderful day Ali

Hi, This web address gives me a 404 error. I have checked and it exactly matches what is posted here. Is there any way to translate the Tiflotecnia site into English? This would make grabbing stuff so much less maddening.

Re: wanted nvda for my windows 7 home basic
After my own kinda rule-bending post, I am going to lock this topic since the essential question about NVDA is already answered, and Windows 7 is no longer in support.
That being said, and because this applies whether we're talking Windows, or the driver & software packages for your printer or multifunction, or whatever you should really never use anything that's on CD/DVD, as it's almost certain to be out of date by the time it lands in your hands. All software makers are constantly updating their online repositories for their software until such goes out of support (and in the case of Windows 7 SP1, there was still a lot going on even after the formal date). Windows 7 SP1 ISO files are available straight from the Microsoft Mothership at Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files)

Re: Adobe Reader and NVDA
Quentin Christensen
I'm not sure what Avpage view is? Normally, when you open a PDF file, if it has been created properly and is accessible, you should be able to read it just like reading a Word document or web page. If the document has been scanned as an image of text, NVDA will normally report this, and in that case you can press NVDA+r to run OCR on the document, and then use the standard reading and navigation keys to read the text (and press escape when done). Otherwise if you could perhaps give more information about the error? Kind regards Quentin.

Good point - at the time it was changed, the need for a download for NVDA 2017.3 was primarily for XP users. There is really no reason for Windows 7 users not to update to SP1, but of course, as you have found, on many Windows 7 CDs (all the ones I have used at least), SP1 is not included and indeed takes some time updating before it is downloaded and updated to.

Re: How to spell out Roman numerals

why in the world are we still using Roman Numerals?- 1. Because they look pretty on a clock face. 2. Because they are handy to differentiate parts of Outline structure. 3. If I see the word stage followed by a Roman numeral I immediately think cancer or other medical staging while if it's an Arabic numeral I think something else, whether a physical location, one of a number of options (stage 3 as opposed to stage 2 in multi-stage performing arts center), etc. No one ever said natural language, or its conventions, "make perfect sense." Heck, natural language, whether spoken or written, always involves unresolvable abiguity on the reader's or listener's end or else "misunderstandings" in the literal sense would not be possible. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 It’s hard waking up and realizing it’s not always black and white. ~ Kelley Boorn

Re: How to spell out Roman numerals
Janet,
Thanks for the follow-up. I am now looking at this closely due to an unexpected peculiarity in how the pattern matching in the NVDA dictionary works. The not substituting for the single letter I will help quite a bit, as the rest of the roman numerals will work. By the way, I just realized after typing out the rest of the message that the two entries for RN 5 and RN 10 should be entered in your dictionary BEFORE the one that covers all the other RNs due to the peculiarity I allude to. Because the pronoun I is now out of the picture, I will suggest that you use a variant on Luke's proposed regular expression for matching, as it eliminates a number of issues related to the peculiarity to which I make reference. Since you have said you only need the Roman numerals one through ten, and we've now dropped one/the pronoun I, I am going to modify his regular expression only to accommodate that, and make it shorter for copy and paste. Were you looking for any Roman numeral up to 9 "Roman digits" long, I wouldn't even consider touching it. Give this a try as the pattern, and I can omit the colon part of matching now, too: \b([IXV])([IXV])([I])?([I])?([a-zA-Z])?\b and this as the replacement: \1 \2 \3 \4 \5 Oddly enough, the above will work for every Roman numeral between two and nine, except 5, because 5 is a single V followed by nothing, and also omits RN ten, because it's a single letter X, so you need two additional entries to cover those two. Here's the pattern for RN 5: \b(V)([a-zA-Z])?\b and the replacement: \1 \2 and for RN 10: \b(X)([a-zA-Z])?\b and the replacement: \1 \2 All of the above presume the Roman numeral with possible optional letter afterward will be free-standing, that is, with whitespace (whether space, tab, newline, etc.) immediately before or after, at a word boundary. Essentially they're their own "words." If you know that you could have any specific punctuation coming immediately afterward, and know what specific punctuation marks are involved, I'd need to tweak to account for that. Unless you're dealing with a text that includes Greek letter names written out, the above should not prove problematic. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 It’s hard waking up and realizing it’s not always black and white. ~ Kelley Boorn

Not necessarily. One of the companies that provides synthesizers uses a system that it may not want to use. I don't know why it does but it’s a very bad system.

A new driver is released from time to time which runs until a certain date. It is the same date for everyone, no matter when they install it. If you install it one day before the date, it will expire the next day. If you install it after it expires it won't work for any period of time. That is likely what the problem is and as far as I know, there is nothing to do but wait for another driver. Gene
