welcome to nvda and i am glad that you love this excellent program. i remember that one time joseph lee mentioned that office 2003 is not supported anymore in nvda versions since 2019. so, i believe that you may get better result if you download older versions of nvda for office 2003 using.

Re: Adobe Reader and NVDA
Neil Campbell
Hello Quentin
I regularly had the same experience using Adobe, and pressed the alt key and the space bar which generally let me read the PDF file. However regularly it would still not read it, and NVDA an r would not read the document either. I made Google Chrome my default PDF reader, and I can now read PDF files just about all the time. I rarely have any success with NVDA and r.

I'm not sure what Avpage view is?
Normally, when you open a PDF file, if it has been created properly and is accessible, you should be able to read it just like reading a Word document or web page.
If the document has been scanned as an image of text, NVDA will normally report this, and in that case you can press NVDA+r to run OCR on the document, and then use the standard reading and navigation keys to read the text (and press escape when done).
Otherwise if you could perhaps give more information about the error?
Kind regards
Quentin.

Re: NVDA and Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
Raymond Brough
Hello Quentin
Many thanks for your clear and concise
suggestions. I implicitly and carefully
followed your instructions in respect of the: NVDA advanced settings (use UIA in Word) and turning off the preview pane. This attempt was unsuccessful, I could not find some of
the areas mentioned in your numbered list of
instructions.
I will make further attempts
and, if still not successful, I will have to seek further assistance, or, as
previously stated, upgrade to Microsoft Office 2016, 2019 or 365 or another
office suite slightly sooner than planned.
An important matter I omitted
to mention in my initial e-mail! My first impressions of NVDA are
positive. The problems I have been experiencing when using Microsoft
Office 2003 can probably largely be attributed to its age and not NVDA.
When I do upgrade my office suite, I sincerely hope it works as intended
but will be prepared for the inevitable IT gremlins and a learning curve.
Again, many
thanks

Word. Outlook essentially uses Word to display messages, and I wonder if
something is going funny in the older version of Office with this new setting:
1. Press NVDA+control+g to open NVDA's settings.
2. Press CONTROL+SHIFT+TAB to move from the first page to the last page,
advanced.
3. Press space to check the "I understand that changing these settings may
cause NVDA to function incorrectly" checkbox.
4. Press TAB to "Use UIA automation to access Microsoft Word document
controls when available.
5. Press space to uncheck this.
6. Press ENTER to close settings
7. Press NVDA+contorl+c to save NVDA's settings.
I'm not sure exactly why the freeze is happening, but I expect the reason
it is happening as soon as you move focus to that problematic email in the list,
is because Word is trying to show you a preview of the message in the preview
page. To be honest, I can't recall the steps for Outlook 2003, but
according to Google: "To turn off the preview pane: In Microsoft Outlook 2003
and 2007, select the View menu, navigate to Reading pane and click Off. In
Windows Mail, click on the View menu and select Layout. Under the Preview Pane
section, uncheck "Show preview pane"."

Re: NVDA Remote
Oleksandr Gryshchenko
Hi friends,
Dear authors of NVDA Remote, I often use this wonderful add-on and have already translated it into my native language. I created the Pull Request in September, but it has not yet been accepted by the repository owners: https://github.com/NVDARemote/NVDARemote/pull/224 If you could please tell me how the procedure for translating your add-on works? Thank you.

Reading All Unicode Characters with NVDA
Dzhovani
Hi all,
Currently, NVDA does not read all unicode symbols it encounters. While there is good support for emois, greek letters and some math symbols are not covered. 1. Can someone give me an idea how the symbol pronunciation dialog works and what is the relationship with the pronunciation level in the synthesizer? 2. Can it be extended to all unicode characters? Are there performance considerations included? Thanks in advance, Dzhovani

Re: NVDA Verbosity for Grouping and sorting messages in Outlook - Can it be changed?
Luke Robinett
Thanks for calling this out. It’s a long-standing NVDA annoyance that I’ve just sort of learned to live with, but it would be great if we had a proper solution at some point. I don’t have any suggestions for resolving the verbosity of groupings but you can change the order in which the columns in the message list appear And consequently the order in which those fields are read aloud. For example, in mailing lists like this one, I care less about who sent it or when it was sent and more about what the subject is, so I put the subject as the first column. I don’t have Outlook in front of me at the moment but you can make these adjustments in the view ribbon, I believe by tapping until you get to view settings. Hope this helps a bit, at least.

Re: Can anyone explain the Input Composition checkboxes in NVDA settings?
Luke Robinett
Thank you for asking this! That area of the Settings has long mystified me as well but I figured I wasn’t missing much, considering NVDA seems to work just fine without ever having to touch those settings. Now I understand why. I also agree with the comments here about how some areas of NVDA settings could be better organized, made more clear and more easily discovered with some sort of search mechanism. Thanks again.

Re: Searching the NVDA Group Archive
Sacha,
I have created an NVDA bug report: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/11831 Regardless of where the fault lies, behavior on the same page should not differ, particularly with regard to page structure, based on browser in use. If you care to comment on it to give any further details regarding your Firefox experience please do so. Somebody's got to fix something, it's just a question of who, and the NVAccess folks can figure out where the fault lies and reach out and/or fix NVDA accordingly. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 If you think that you can think about a thing, inextricably attached to something else, without thinking of the thing it is attached to, then you have a legal mind. ~ Thomas Reed Powell
