Gene,
Speak time, NVDA key 12.
Just a small correction. The command is NVDA+F12.
Only clearing things up since NVDA+12 could be interpreted as NVDA+1 then 2 quickly.

In Windows 10, I click on the desktop icon that says my user name. This opens in File Explorer, and Dropbox is in that folder. I hope this helps.

Good evening listers; NVDA is my backup screen reader; but I would like to learn to use it just in case I need too.  What cursors take the place of the jaws cursor for starters?

I use Waterfox on a daily basis. It’s completely accessible. At least it works for everything I’ve ever needed to do.

Phil,
I had a go with Thunderbird and didn’t find it very easy to use but that’  might be because I was thinking too MS having moved from OE to Outlook
Probably. Thunderbird is indeed quite accessible :)

Re: Brltty, anything new

David Csercsics <bleeblat@...>

Yes, the braille extender add-on has a specific .brf mode as well as a keystroke to hide dot 7 and 8,  but I just toggle the .brf mode on when I am in a braille file and it works fine. I just realized that I cannot replicate your exact configuration here anyway, because this box has a serial port as well as a bunch of USB ports even if I had a serial display, but I'm glad you were able to get BRLTTY working at least, because that really helps you out. If you don't have the Windows 10 app essentials add-on, and the add-on updater I'd recommend those as well, as I find they help.

Re: Brltty, anything new

Deborah Armstrong <debee@...>

Well I discovered a few things.

On an old Windows 7 machine, which has a real serial port, I installed the latest Brltty which is
brltty-win-6.0-1-libusb-1.0
it's an .Exe file and a typical Windows installer. I picked TSI for my Braille display which loads the driver that supports both the PowerBraille and the Navigator.

Immediately Brltty loaded and displayed "no foreground window" which is typical behavior since the interface is graphical and Brltty only works at the console level.

Next I updated my NVDA to 2019.1 and after restarting it, I went to Preferences-Settings-Braille and picked Brltty as my Braille display. Before I could even select OK or apply, NVDA was communicating with my PowerBraille just fine.

So that worked flawlessly.

But when I set the output table to U.S. English 6-dot computer Braille, it is stillshowing dot 7 for anything capitalized. That of course makes BRF files look very funny because many translation programs show upper case letters for those characters.

I can always write a SED script to convert case, but I'd rather not spend the time to convert all the brf files I'd like to read.
I think this is a bug or maybe a flaw with the table.

The other weird thing is that for non-printing characters, such as the form-feed, Brltty shows the equivalent in hex "0x00C" which is annoying to have to read on the Braille display. I don't find a preference to suppress the display of non-printing characters, nor a way to suppress extra spaces or blank lines. Doing all this would make it easier to read BRF files, though for working with ordinary text, Word XLS and other types of files, NVDA on Windows 7 is doing great with Brltty still.

One thing that did reduce the number of weird characters was unchecking the box for "expand to computer Braille for the word at the cursor". If that box is checked the word at the cursor contains extra gibberish if you are looking at that word in a BRF file and you are using either the 6 or 8-dot computer Braille table. This seems unintuitive, but there you are!

Next I'll try Windows 10 and see if I can get brltty to work there. I also need to try that Braille extender add-on, thanks for the recommendation. I had used Brltty with NVDA extensively at work until my old Win7 machine was replaced with a shiny brand-new all-in-one running Windows 10. So, I  was glad to find an old one lying around I could test with.

Subject: [nvda] greetings from a new user, making transition from JAWS2018 using Win10 and looking for tips and tricks and default program suggestions

Greetings folks

I’m a 20+ year user of JAWS. Not necessarily because it has been the ‘best’ but rather because it was what my employer and uni’ provided and it simply became habitual. Now I have to pay for all upgrades myself, and not really enjoying the ‘drug pusher’  like relationship JAWS has with its users, I have decided to make the slow but sure move to NVDA. I’ve heard great things about the screen reader and in fact I’ve heard in many cases I should be able to do things with NVDA that I cannot do with JAWS.

So my PC is Windows10 with MS-Office.

1                     Is there a document that gives NVDA equivalent keyboards commands as JAWS, ie if you did X ion JAWS then do Y in NVDA? Presumably the ‘access’ key is the zero on the num pad that JAWS uses?

2                     What is the best default email client and web browser to use with  NVDA? Have experience of Outlook, Outlook Express, poor experience of  Thunderbird. Have used I#e, Firefox and Chrome. No experience of Edge.

3                     Music player? WMP or WinAmp or something else?

4                     Does NVDA work with any kind of ‘Open Office’ non MS office suite?

I guess the things I use the most with my old Win7Pro machine that I’m about to stop using and move to the Win10 machine are:

-          Outlook

-          - IE, Firefox (or Waterfox) and Chrome.

-          Word.

-          Audible Manager

-          Soundtaxi

-          Sendspace

-          Ccleaner

-          Secure Notes

-          Dropbox

-          WMP.

Thanks all and apologies if this question has been asked and asked again, feel free to point me at web resources that will answer my questions.

Kindest

PJ

Hello all

Here is a release trying to fix the issue with headers in new Office 365 versions.

Download link:
https://github.com/CyrilleB79/outlookExtended/releases/download/V1.3-dev-20190718-fixOffice365IDsChange/outlookExtended-1.3-dev-20190718.nvda-addon

@Joseph, Noelia, admins:
Could you update download link for dev version on the website?

@Users experimenting issue reading the headers with recent Office 365 version:
Could you perform some or all of the following tests with tis new addon version and the log level set to "DEBUG"?
1. Open a message to read, e.g. from Inbox:
1a. Try to read headers with Alt+1 to Alt+6
1b. By pressing Shift+Tab, you may reach a button to expand or reduce the headers. Press it to change the headers state from expanded to collapsed or vice versa and try to read the headers again.
1c. If you have the opportunity to have signed messages, try to read "Signed by" field by pressing Alt+7, either with headers ewpanded and collapsed.
2. Open a new message (in edition) and fill in the "To", "Cc" and "Bcc" fields
Try to read all the fields with Alt+1 to Alt+6
3. Open NVDA's log with NVDA+F1, save it in a file with Ctrl+S and send it to me. Any comment telling me which test was performed and which works or not is welcomed.
Note: Do not perform these test using confidential e-mails since the headers contents will be logged.

Sam,

The fastest way would be to go to the 64bit version of Office 365 as long you have a 64bit Windows.

But don’t forget that you would have to uninstall and re-install Office and that would lead to loosing your Outlook settings.

I wrote Cyrille a message about the problem, She is taking care about the current addon. I’m going to find a solution together with her to get this solved.

I can offer you my older addon outlook enhanced in the meantime, I modified it so that it  works with the new control-ID’s.

Cheers,

  Ralf

We discovered a problem that Microsoft changed some control-ID’s in the 32bit versions of Outlook and that’s why the Alt-numkeys aren’t working anymore.

I’m sure that a future update of the addon will handle this issue.

Yes, this version will allow us to fix things with your help in providing the nvda.log. It is not a development version which fixes the changes Microsoft applied, but  it will help to develop a new version of outlook extended.

I tried to shift-tab and don’t see an option to expand headers etc.

We discovered a problem that Microsoft changed some control-ID’s in the 32bit versions of Outlook and that’s why the Alt-numkeys aren’t working anymore.

I’m sure that a future update of the addon will handle this issue.

Best,

  Ralf

Subject: [nvda] Problem with Outlook Extended; Status: Enabled; Version: 1.2

Hi All,

I am having a problem with Outlook Extended; Status: Enabled; Version: 1.2 plugin.

I am running NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) Version: beta-18028,e579eb02

However same issue with the latest official release of NVDA as well.

When I press shift-nvda-I or shift-nvda-a the commands work perfectly.

But, when I press alt-1-9 I just get the message (Not in a message window).

This is when I am in a message.

Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Thanks so much for any help.

Sam

Re: log file for testing - log didn't come throught eh list who should I send it to?

And, as a generic answer to the question:  To the tech with whom you're working or as an attachment to the trouble ticket on github or wherever you happen to be working with someone who requested a log.

Attachments are stripped here, so even if one were to include a log file as an attachment, it will not come through.

Re: SPL Addon Questions

Roger Stewart

It is Station Playlist. It includes Station Playlist Studio, Station Playlist Streamer and Playlist Creator. The add on covers all these now. The main program, Station Playlist Studio is D J program for radio and internet broadcasting.  I've been using it for several years now, and the add on is super!

If you purchased ebooks, MS shut down that service and is refunding everyone's money.  I don't know about other things you might have purchased.

Re: Brltty, anything new

David Csercsics <bleeblat@...>

You could try the Linux for Windows subsystem, but again that's for another list/topic. I'll poke around. I don't have an older display to test with exactly, but I can mess around with BRLTTY with what I have and see if we can get something to work. I don't see why we couldn't just use what narrator has already installed. I may ping Microsoft and see if there is a solution to this that's easy. From poking around a tiny bit, it looks like Narrator uses the latest BRLTTY, so it's just a matter of how do we get NVDA to use that. I'll try the Microsoft folks and see if I can get a decent response out of them. I used to use an old PowerBraille too, and I quite liked it.

Re: greetings from a new user, making transition from JAWS2018 using Win10 and looking for tips and tricks and default program suggestions

The truth is that many screenreaders have adopted similar commands
now, so that making a transition from 1 to another doesn't have to be
an exercise in agony.

I personally use & prefer Firefox.

The nv-access.org website sells some books to get you started w/the
basics, it's like $24 USD, for the text version, a bit more for the
audio, & goes to support ongoing NVDA development. 2 birds, 1 stone,
great investment.

Hi, welcome to the list. Hey, if you are moving to NVDA. You can still have
Jaws on your computer until you get used to NVDA then once you are fully
there then you can get rid of Jaws. I have both here but I use NVDA for
some things. Then I use Jaws for other things. My room mate is a computer
teacher and uses it for her teaching. I’m newly on win ten.

Subject: [nvda] greetings from a new user, making transition from
JAWS2018using Win10 and looking for tips and tricks and default program
suggestions

Greetings folks

I’m a 20+ year user of JAWS. Not necessarily because it has been the ‘best’
but rather because it was what my employer and uni’ provided and it simply
became habitual. Now I have to pay for all upgrades myself, and not really
enjoying the ‘drug pusher’  like relationship JAWS has with its users, I
have decided to make the slow but sure move to NVDA. I’ve heard great things
about the screen reader and in fact I’ve heard in many cases I should be
able to do things with NVDA that I cannot do with JAWS.

So my PC is Windows10 with MS-Office.

1                     Is there a document that gives NVDA equivalent
keyboards commands as JAWS, ie if you did X ion JAWS then do Y in NVDA?
Presumably the ‘access’ key is the zero on the num pad that JAWS uses?
2                     What is the best default email client and web browser
to use with  NVDA? Have experience of Outlook, Outlook Express, poor
experience of  Thunderbird. Have used I#e, Firefox and Chrome. No experience
of Edge.
3                     Music player? WMP or WinAmp or something else?
4                     Does NVDA work with any kind of ‘Open Office’ non MS
office suite?

I guess the things I use the most with my old Win7Pro machine that I’m about
to stop using and move to the Win10 machine are:
-          Outlook
-          - IE, Firefox (or Waterfox) and Chrome.
-          Word.
-          Audible Manager
-          Soundtaxi
-          Sendspace
-          Ccleaner
-          Secure Notes
-          Dropbox
-          WMP.

Thanks all and apologies if this question has been asked and asked again,
feel free to point me at web resources that will answer my questions.

Kindest

PJ
