Copying Text in Original Format With NVDA

Hi,
Someone told me that it's possible to copy a text exactly as it's spoken (with headers, lists and such) using JAWS.
Is it possible to copy this way with NVDA as well? If NVDA hasn't this feature by default, would an add-on do the trick?

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,

Hello Quentin,
I tried restarting without addons and it didn't work. Could you tell
me how to find and send the logs. That I think is the best solution.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Firstly, just to confirm that you are familiar with the current behaviour
of selecting with the review cursor - NVDA+F9 to mark the start of the
block, move to the end of the block and NVDA+F10 once to select the block
or NVDA+F10 twice quickly to select and copy it. If you use the review
cursor to select and then press control+c to copy for instance, it may
not
work depending on whether it is possible to select text with the
conventional text cursor. If you press NVDA+f10 once and NVDA reports
"Cannot select text, press twice to copy", then you will need to copy by
pressing NVDA+F10 twice quickly.

It might be worth restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled, just to ensure
there are no add-ons playing up. Press NVDA+Q then down arrow to
"Restart
with add-ons disabled" and press ENTER to restart, then try again.

Otherwise, if you set the log to debug (in the general settings with
NVDA+control+g then tab to the log level, down arrow to select debug and
enter to close), repeat the actions and then copy the log to an email to
me, I can have a look at exactly what is going on.

Kind regards

Quentin.

locked NVDA versus JAWS

Aine Kelly Costello

Hi all,

New here and my apologies if this topic has been well-covered before but I’ve not found an efficient ways to search group archives yet!

I’m switching back to Windows after using a Mac for a couple of years, as I’ll be studying investigative journalism and am fairly sure I’ll find any software we need to use etc. to work better on Windows than Mac (still getting info on that).

I’m moving overseas, where I probably won’t have access to funding for technology, etc., as an international student. So I’m trying to work out now whether to exclusively use NVDA or try and purchase a JAWS SMA while I’m still living in New Zealand.

My question is: can you tell me about anything that springs to mind that NVDA does particularly poorly that JAWS does well? In the domains of MS Word, excel and web browsing, in particular.

I imagine JAWS is well-ahead of NVDA in OCRing by now, for instance, but perhaps there’s enough free software around to do this efficiently now that that’s not a big deal any more … thoughts?

Thanks very much in advance,

Best wishes,

Áine

Re: Windows 1903

Hi,
Actually, that definition may need an update:
* Windows 10: the current version of Windows at the moment.
* Version 1903: technically called "release ID" that denotes when a particular snapshot of Windows 10 is released to the general public, denoting year and month of its target completion; in this case, March 2019, which did happen; it was tested by testers for a long time since then.
When we Windows 10 users talk about releases, we usually omit "Windows 10" from our communication, hence you'll see us use abbreviations such as "Version 1903" or just 1903. This will become a bit confusing for the next few weeks as Microsoft is currently working on the "next" big one that's planned for release around this time next year; bits of it will show up later this year in the form of another feature update.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: Windows 1903

Hi,

It is a shorthand for Windows 10 Version 1903. Windows 10 is indeed the “last major” version of Windows as far as old ways of maintenance is concerned; Windows 10 uses continuous delivery, and since 2017, major upgrades to Windows 10 (termed “feature updates”) are released twice a year.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi David,

Others have already suggested both the Microsoft Word with NVDA training module, and the NVDA Productivity bundle, so I won't labour that, except to confirm that yes, track changes is included, as well as comments, and other reviewing features of Word.  It was also designed for Word 2010, through to the latest 365, so will be suitable for you with Word 2013.

The Microsoft Word for NVDA module comes in electronic text (HTML, Word document, ePub and Kindle KFX formats in the one zip file) for $30 AUD (about $23 USD): https://www.nvaccess.org/product/microsoft-word-training-for-nvda-ebook/

It is also available in the NVDA Productivity bundle, which also includes Basic Training for NVDA (well worth working through first), as well as Excel and Outlook for NVDA modules, and telephone support: https://www.nvaccess.org/product/nvda-productivity-bundle/

Kind regards

Re: NVDA and Skype

Well I use skype8 for desktop and it works.

However, I don't really care for it or need it per say.

This has meant I have had to drastically change the way I do business.

So no skype calls at all.

Due to timezones that does take out a lot of a nusence for me anyway, it also does take away some business opertunities but not many.

Email, standard phone and physical contact is how I do it anyway right down to the roots.

Now the entire family are in whats app and while I will not join the mega group of junk which everyone in the international group joins  well who knows.

I don't have a reason to make skype my entire life just like I have no reason to make twitter or facebook my entire life either.

The tutorials can be found on the following page at http://accessibilitycentral.net/nvda%20tutorials%20for%20other%20programs.html

You will need to jump down by headings to the skype sections and links will come off that page.

They are only in english.

If you are un aware of the website i have been putting together it may be a good reference to you with nvda etc.
