That's ok Marcio,

Though I am still curious which lines you couldn't read fully with one command before you found this keystroke?

As noted, CONTROL+DOWN ARROW is a Windows command, and in most places it moves down by one paragraph.  Additionally, as you move, NVDA reads a corresponding amount of text - if you move by one word (control+right arrow, also a Windows command), NVDA reads one word, if you move down by one line, NVDA reads one line, etc.

My question to Marcio is to ask what program / kind of file are you reading where you are having trouble reading by line to begin with?  Pressing NVDA+up arrow (or in laptop layout, NVDA+l) should read the current line.  On web pages, it's harder to find out exactly what text is visually on one line, so NVDA sets the maximum line length, and if a block of text is longer than that, it assumes each N characters is a new "line".  You can find the option in NVDA's browse mode settings - NVDA+control+b will get you there directly.

There is also an option in Browse mode settings "Use screen layout (when supported)".  I've just copied from the user guide here:

"Use screen layout
Key: NVDA+v

This option allows you to specify whether content in browse mode should place content such as links and other fields on their own line, or if it should keep them in the flow of text as it is visually shown. If the option is enabled then things will stay as they are visually shown, but if it is disabled then fields will be placed on their own line."

Subject: [nvda] Question about reading an entire line with NVDA

Hey guys, I'm here again :)
This time the question is about... well you saw it on the subject I suppose :)
So, the thing is: I found out that pressing CTRL along with the down arrow, NVDA will read the entire line from a text, regardless if that line is broken for some reason.
However, while I just found it out, I also found out that apparently, this  option isn't described on the NVDA's keystrokes refference.
So my question: is it actually something expected, that pressing CTRL+down arrow NVDA will read the entire line? If so, why isn't it described as an option?
Or, well, what would I be missing? Can anyone point me on the right direction? :)

I haven't updated JAWS for a long time because I almost never use it.  The demo didn't time out after a certain number of days' use for most of the history of JAWS.  I don't know if that has changed in more recent versions, though I doubt it.  I think that, on the many lists I follow, I would have seen this discussed.  But I expect others will definitely know because they are using the current one.

Re: NVDA with Chrome

I don't know what is causing the problem.  You can run NVDA with no add-ons running in the following way:
Use NVDA key q to bring up the exit NVDA dialog.  Down arrow until you get to something like restart with no add-ons.  Press enter.  NVDA will restart with no add-ons.

To run NVDA with add-ons again, exit NVDA in the usual way, NVDA key q, then enter.  then run it again.  It is now running as it usually does, with add-ons running again.

If hanging doesn't occur when you run Chrome with no add-ons, then one of the add-ons is causing the problem.  If it still crashes, add-ons are not the problem.

of you have already posted about it, but yes, NV Access is pleased to
announce that version 2019.1 of NVDA, the free screen reader for
Microsoft Windows, has now been released.

Highlights of this release include performance improvements when
accessing both Microsoft word and Excel, stability and security
improvements such as support for add-ons with version compatibility
information, and many other bug fixes.

In the release announcement at
https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2019-1-now-available/ there is
also important information about add-on compatibility. Note that
although the framework for having add-ons report versions
compatibility is there, and we encourage all add-on developers to
update their add-ons to include this if they haven't already - This
version of NVDA will however still allow installing and loading of
add-ons that do not yet contain Minimum and Last Tested NVDA version
information at all, but upgrading to future versions of NVDA (E.g.
2019.2) may automatically cause these older add-ons to be disabled.

Kind regards

Quentin.

hi quentin and thanks so much for your assistance.
the website that you mentioned:
http://www.blockediniran.com/
does not work in Iran at all and i cant open it.
i really dont understand is it possible really that your website is
blocked in iran?
i believe that all iranian blind users, have nvda on there computers,
even if they use other screen readers like jaws.

no, its not related to wordpress, because numerus websites in iran are
based on wordpress.
but i thought its a temporary problem for your website and its
resolved very soon, or temporary problem in Iran, because i have such
issues
even with iranian websites.
whats the solution that we can access your website in iran without any issues?
first, i thought that like github, your website also does not support
older versions of firefox, so, i asked my friend to check for me
whether she can opens your website or not, with the latest version of
firefox!
and she confirmed that your website cant be open for her too.
so, my friend and me decided to send email for you and inform you
about this problem that you help us in this regard.

I know our site is based on Word Press and that also appears to be blocked,
so that is possibly the reason?

Interestingly that tool also says Dropbox is blocked so I'll be interested

Re: How to Select a Link While n Browse Mode

Jonathan COHN

Well, it is near impossible to tell what is happening from your description.

You should be able to turn off NVDA and browse to the link using tab keys and activate it that way.  If you see the same behavior (you do have a focus highlight ring don’t you?) then you know something is fishy in your JS code and its interaction with the Browser. But then you will need to try another Browser. If you are testing with Edge, try Firefox otherwise try Edge or Internet explorer.

Sorry to revive this thread so late. I now have  a new link problem  (but am unable to share the link because it is under development). I am clicking on a link that actually uses JavaScript. It has an href of "javascript:void()", and has a click() event (which is also triggered by pressing the enter key) which executes a JavaScript function. The first time, the enter key is pressed the function works correctly, but the second time, focus just flies randomly to another part of the page. If I change the link to a button everything works fine, but for various reasons I want to keep it as a link. Is this an NVDA bug? Any workaround? I do not have this issue in JAWS.

This is one of the things I keep begging people to include when questions like this come up.  They are almost impossible to answer in the abstract because there are so many potential scenarios that can cause misbehavior.

Unless this is occurring somewhere like an online banking page, where one must be logged in to get to it, and involves private information, please, please, please include the URL of the page in question, and the identification for the problematic link on that page.  That's the way any of us here can examine things to get an answer that's both fast, and accurate.

Hello,

Did you say you were having trouble finding Zotero in MS word? Is the Zotero tab visible in MS word for you now? Otherwise, you may need to temporarily disable or turn off your antivirus and reinstall the MS word plub-in. That was the case for me on Windows 7. My Windows 10 machine with the built in antivirus had no difficulties.

Re: nvda keeps announcing app star curser and normal curser

Quentin Christensen

Hi Bobby,

It sounds like you've got NVDA set to report mouse cursor changes.  When a mouse user moves the mouse over different controls, the shape changes to reflect the type of control - for instance, over a text edit area like an email message or a document in Microsoft Word, it changes to an "Edit cursor" which is a vertical line you can click in the exact spot you want to edit.  At the edge of windows, it changes to a double ended arrow indicating you can click and drag to resize the Window.

To turn that off, press NVDA+control+m to open NVDA's mouse settings, and the first item which should have focus is "Report mouse shape changes".  Uncheck that and press ENTER and it should stop reporting the mouse shape.

Regards

Quentin.

Hi Abbie,

Which version of Office are you using?  I just tried in Office 365 and it seemed to work for me - using UI Automation, I could activate links in Outlook, and in Word.

I know this because I subscribe to some blogs, and the notification emails I receive contain the links to the post and other related links. When I unchecked that box, the links appeared as they normally would. Is that the way it’s supposed to work for some reason? If so, it’s not a problem, since I’ve created a configuration profile and can enable UI automation there. I would just like to know. Thanks.

Re: column/row headers not reading in Excel 2013

Quentin Christensen

Hi Jenine,

When you say you are setting the column header with NVDA+control+c and nothing happens, do you mean NVDA reads nothing when you press NVDA+control+c to set the header, or it's not reading the header as you navigate around your spreadsheet?

When you press NVDA+control+c, NVDA should report: "Set A1 as start of column headers" (where I had the focus in A1 when I pressed the command).  If that isn't being read, is the focus on a cell in Excel AND you are not editing the cell?  If you have started typing something in the cell or pressed F2 to edit it, Excel will be in edit mode and you won't be able to set the header until you finish (enter) or cancel (escape) editing that cell.

If it's not reporting headers as you navigate, then press NVDA+control+d to open NVDA's document formatting settings, and be sure that "Row / Column headers" is checked (press alt+e until the focus jumps to that option).

Kind regards

Quentin.

I use the command to set a column header, or row header but more often column header, and nothing happens. I’m using NVDA+shift+C.

This issue happens no matter the size of the spreadsheet. I’ve tried making it an official table first then choosing the column headers and that doesn’t seem to have an effect. Is there something that’s changed about Excel, a command or setting I need to change?

Otherwise, I love NVDA with Excel! Can’t say that loudly enough.

Re: PDF: Quick links are interrupting the flow of text

Hi there,

The image didn't come through (but even if it did, many in the group would not be able to see it), but are you talking about a program to read PDF files, or a PDF file you have created with links to jump between pages as part of the text.

If it's a PDF file you've made, I'm not aware of a way to skip them (otherwise, how would you find them if you did want to use them?)  Personally I tend to encourage people to learn how to navigate effectively so that such links aren't needed where there are commands which do it (which as you say, causes the problem you are encountering).  I'm happy to agree to disagree with anyone who thinks differently on that, but I don't have an answer for this scenario I am afraid.

Re: Excerp from the portable NVDA log.

On my personal laptop I am using and installed Copy, but I tried with a portable copy and everything worked fine as well.
On my college computer I think it is running windows 10 version 1803 whereas my laptop  run windows 10 version 1809 . I think The desktop computer at my college that I normally use  runs a slightly older build of office 2016 compared to the one installed on my laptop.
In terms of NVDA addons, if I remember correctly on my portable Copy I only use Mozilla abs enHancement and windows 10 App essentials.
If you want to try and reproduce the problem, you can go to Excel options, go to the add ins category, and then click on the go button under manage add ins. From there, a window will show up, simply check the solver add in and then click OK. Once Enabled, solver can be found under the data tab of the ribbon. Once you invoked solver, try clicking on the options button, and see if NVDA announces  the various controls inside the options window.
