Re: Keyboard not acting normal

David Griffith

The first suggestion is to switch from NVDA to Windows Narrator Control windows and Enter and see if the problems persist.

If it does it becomes possible that this is a hardware fault - have you had any spillages?
To confirm this you could plug in an alternative keyboard - any USB will do for diagnostics and see if you regain your arrow keys then.
This would pretty much confirm a hardware fault if it clears the problems.
If you have had a spillage then a period of drying out may help but not guaranteed.

If Narrator interacts with the keyboard without problem then a clean re-install of NVDA would hopefully remove the problem.

Hi Group,

My keyboard has not been acting normal since yesterday.
I cannot use the arrow keys. Only the left arrow key moves.
At first the NVDA key did not work but later misteriously started to work. I rebooted a few times hoping itcorrect itself I am having a hard time writing this message.
Any ideas why this is happening and how to correct this?

Re: Keyboard not acting normal

Can you give us more details about both the computer and the keyboard?

Laptop or desktop?

Make and model of computer?

If desktop, "standard issue" keyboard that came with it or third party?

If third-party, make and model of the keyboard?

Presuming you're running Windows 10, check Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update Pane, View Update History to see what updates may have been applied, and at the correct timeframe to have possibly triggered the issue.

What do you want the program to do that it doesn’t now?  And what benefit is there for support?

Hello NVDA Group,

In 2007, I became aware of Jarte and NVDA when getting a refurbished
computer from a Texas-based organization called Computers for the
Blind. For those unfamiliar, Jarte was said to mimic the functions of
WordPad and go further. It was paired with NVDA on computers provided
by this organization.
Since 2019, Jarte has not released new updates nor supported its
latest updates. Is there a program that is now promoted to be as user
friendly for the vision impaired as Jarte was bestowed with such
acolades?

I assume NVDA and Jarte were favored by the above organization as each
offered a free version. Thanks in advance.

As Chris said, I posted an admin notice about this several days ago, and just refreshed it now.  In addition, there was an actual topic from someone asking what you've asked, and the question was already answered.

The membership here is expected to be proactive and review topics, all of them, to see if something they're about to ask has already been asked and/or addressed before doing so.

I feel confident that as specific add-on manifest updates occur that will be announced here either by the add-on developer or their chosen messenger.

The one thing I absolutely do not want is an endless stream of, "Will my add-ons be updates?," and, "Will we be notified about it?" topics.  The answers are Yes and Yes.

This topic is now locked.  Please, everyone, don't flood the group with questions regarding add-on updates during this shake-out period!

All I'll say about this, and it's not accessibility related, is think long and hard about whether you really want or need full drive encryption.  Most of us don't, particularly for our personal computers.

As a repair tech I have seen more incidents where everything was lost and unrecoverable because of "encryption gone wrong" than I care to talk about.  And I'm not talking about ransomware encryption, but intentional drive encryption.  It can be a major stumbling block if recovery is needed.  It can also be an issue if it "burps" in any way.

Give due consideration to whether this is something needed or not.

Re: Be prepared for some bumps in the NVDA road - Major Change is coming . . . #adminnotice

Since this Admin Notice was clearly missed by some, and now that the expected "add-on compatibility bumps" are happening, please read this again.  This is not a situation that warrants panic, it's just a major inconvenience for early users of NVDA 2021.1 beta that was entirely predictable and difficult to prevent.  It's an unusual shake-out period, but a shake-out period nonetheless and will not last all that long.
---------------------------------
Hello All,

That major change is at the level of the NVDA code itself, and while that is not something that should concern you directly, the possible side effects, particularly in reference to add-ons, is likely to.

The add-on application program interface (API) is to be updated to version 2021.1. This means add-ons not declaring support for NVDA 2021.1 in their manifests will be marked as incompatible. It doesn't matter if they're really incompatible or not, because this is the mechanism that is used to check compatibility, and invariably, due to a combination of factors, the add-on manifests sometimes don't get updated in perfect synchrony with the NVDA code.  Plenty of add-ons that are now and will be perfectly compatible will end up being flagged as incompatible, and that will stop once the necessary tweak is made to their manifests.

All of that detail shouldn't concern you, either, but I wanted folks to be aware of why this is likely to happen.  And it's most likely to occur when the beta versions of the next version of NVDA begin to show up.

If it occurs, please do not panic, it is most likely to get worked out once the incompatibility is flagged. If one of your favorite add-ons continues to be flagged as incompatible for a couple of days after you first see that, then do your add-on developer a favor and let them know.  Many will be fixed before even a couple of days passes, which is why I don't suggest that everyone flood the developer's inbox immediately.

The purpose of this message is to make clear that the sky is well and truly not falling, though the possibility of it seeming like it is exists. There is almost certain to be a bump or two, at a minimum.  Stay calm and carry on.

Too bad some computers don’t’ even have the old-style pC speakers anymore. The only thing I can think of would be a series of beeps or tones that could let you know where you are at in the prompt/dialogue stage. Such a thing would be pretty simple to code, I imagine. But yeah, no audio drivers or really anything else would be loaded so I think aside from a monitor screen that’s probably the only kind of feedback you could get.

Hello Richard,

I last used bitLocker in 2015.  At that time, bitLocker would ask the sighted for a power on password.  This dialog was completely inaccessible to the blind.  After about 30 seconds, I would enter my bitLocker  power-on password and hope that the dialog box was open.  (Note if the computer was doing updates, then this strategy would fail.) If I entered an incorrect password, the resulting error dialog was also in accessible.  After waiting ten minutes or so, if the computer had not reached the Microsoft account login keyword, I would reboot the machine and try again.  Usually I would find a kind sighted person to help me turn on my computer.  I had to get a sighted person to turn on my computer about 50% of the time.  Microsoft said that they could not make the Bit Locker dialog accessible because Bit Locker runs early in the power-on cycle.

Note, using bitLocker was my employer’s requirement.

BitLocker encrypts your hard drive and is probably a good idea.

I would be interested if there has been any bitLocker progress since 2015.

Hi,

I have bitlocker on my work laptop. NVDA does not speak anything on the screen. It appears way before NVDA gets initialized.

Not sure if it is a general behaviour or my company has configured it wrongly.

Thanks,

NVDA+F7 is the command to open the elements list - which starts in a list of links.

Re: NVDA 2021.1 Beta 1 is now available

Hello all,

I will provide some details after visiting dream land, but suffice to say that the add-ons community is working hard to prepare add-ons for NVDA 2021.1. I do know that most of my own add-ons (in particular, Add-on Updater) will not work with NVDA 2021.1 beta 1 at this time, but rest assured that I’m working hard on resolving issues.

Cheers,

Joseph
