Hi,

Sorry, I should have made my environment clear in my last email:

NVDA 2019.1 (rc1 and 2018 (various editions

Strangely, the beeping does not occur in the list of files and folders in My Documents!

Is it a feature of NVDA specific to Outlook?

Hello Cearbhall and list,

first of all, what version of Outlook and NVDA are you using, is this issue connected to a recent software update of either Outlook or NVDA on your side?

Just for the record, I am using outlook 2013 and NVDA 2019-1.

I have never experienced the problem you are talking about.

Sorry I couldn’t help. But maybe someone else can if we are able to narrow the issue down a bit.

Kind regards,

Bianka

Can you be a little more specific?
Did it ever work for you and what may have changed if it did?

If its always been an issue can you cursor through the whole number and can you do this in either screen or object navigation as well.

Re: question on win 10 and nvda announcing program

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Yes as I see it many bits of software use Windows explorer internally to deal with file management so even turning on the profile for Groove will only silence nvda while it sees the running window is from that application. As soon as you get an explorer derived view, nvda will reawaken.
I've had the same issue with self voicing programs as well in that case you get two voices of course!

My guess is that it announces it before the profile has the chance to stop speech. There is no setting to have the titles of programs not be announced when the program runs. You could stop speech before you tell the computer to play the songs or you could use the speech dictionary to make Groove Music not be spoken. But then, it would never be spoken.

Hello there,

I was wondering if there is a setting somewhere to have nvda NOT announce the program title when it is lost?

Here is the scenario.

Windows ten

I have a profile setup to have no speech when groove music is active,

However when I press enter on an mp3, the computer announces groove music and then starts the song and then nvda goes silent as wanted.

Is there a way to have it not announce the groove music title?

Thanks

To get around this awful program Itunes, maybe you can use Dropbox on both and transfer them like that.
Of course you would need to make the files into a download or play them off the cloud.

The download link can be sent via email though.
If its too big then I guess its Items. I find nvda hit and miss with that for my phone. I don't think the apply interface is easy to navigate with nvda on a pc, personally.

What synthesizer are you using? It sounds to me like some sort of tracking problem and the first thing I test is what happens with a different synthesizer. I vaguely seem to recall that a certain synthesizer doesn't work properly with say all.

Hi.

I just got reaper last week and haven't really gotten anywhere with it yet, but I have found a good number of resources.

Check out the reaper accessibility wiki, it should be a great starting point:
https://reaperaccessibility.com/index.php/Main_Page

They have created an html version of the user guide there. You can also download a number of pdf files from the main Reaper site itself. This includes the user guide, but also a few other useful things. Definitely start with the wiki and follow the instructions on getting started. You will want to download some add-ons that plug into Reaper.

I think though, that one of the things that might be screenreader driven is that it is often preferable to us to leave these messages like alerts on, but during other reading, indicate something has happened through a sound rather than nvda going and reading the message. After all a sighted person can register the little indication but not be distracted during reading.
This sounds like an add on or maybe a core function for the future, as I said previously, the 3d sound add on makes a discreet noise when an alert arrives but has not way to not read the event as well unless I'm missing something.

Important: List Conduct #adminnotice

Nimer Jaber

Hello NVDA List,

This is Nimer, your friendly list owner coming to you with another message.

I would like to ask everyone, no matter where you stand on the issues at hand, to step back, relax, grab a drink, and read this message with clarity and with the mindset that I, your list owner, am doing the best I can as a human being, that I, the list owner have feelings, that I, your list owner, am not your enemy, and I, your list owner, have a duty to maintain a list full of a variety of members, with new members joining all the time, who have an expectation of discussing the list topic at hand, NVDA. Over the past few days, I have observed a number of message threads, and have walked away with the following observations:

1. With any list, there are a number of rules, and guidelines as well. As a member of a list, I must try to follow those rules, lest the list become unruly. The admins and moderators of that list set rules, and it is my duty to abide by those rules and guidelines to the best that I can.
2. With a list that has lots of members, and when that list has a stated purpose, a narrow topic, it is important to follow the purpose of the list because not following the stated purpose is violating the purpose of that list, subjects other list members to needless clutter, and gets away from the stated list purpose.
3. Many lists, including this one, are not designed as places for members to chat, they have a specific purpose. And it is the owner and moderators' role to make sure that this is enforced.
4. Consider that, if every list member in a thousand-member list on the list sent one off-topic message a day, there would be a thousand messages in excess.
5. Likewise, if everyone sends one message in agreement or disagreement of an Admin or Moderator message on the list, there would all of a sudden be a thousand extra messages.

Now, I know that not everyone on the list will send a message that is off-topic, or a message to the list at all for that matter, but as the list owner, I can tell you that I have seen many threads stray off-topic, many threads that have nothing to do with the stated list purposes, many subjects that are hijacked, and many repetitive questions asked, sometimes multiple times a day, with threads often exceeding 30+ messages.

For all of these reasons, I, along with Brian under my direction, have set together some rules and guidelines to remind us all of protocol, to allow all of us to be involved in a list that has a purpose, that is able to be helpful to the majority of users, new and veterans, and a list which represents the NVAccess community well.

Please read, and follow, the rules and guidelines as posted. Please consider the tone behind each message you send, and that we are all humans trying to do the best we can, and we all have life circumstances that are different from one another. Please consider that the topic of this list is NVDA, and anything that is not about NVDA is off-topic. Whether we allow any off-topic thread is and always has been up to the discretion of the moderator and owner of this list. We have, in the past, allowed a lot of latitude in terms of off-topic threads, but they have gotten out of hand lately, with a number of users leaving, stating they find the clutter unhelpful, etc, and I agree with them on this point. No thread on this list should be 30, 40, or 50 messages long. No thread should be hijacked, no thread should be about any topic that is unrelated to NVDA, and this is as it should be.

Does this mean that we won't allow any off-topic thread ever again? No, it does not. Some messages may be helpful to our community at large. The occasional off-topic message is not a big deal. But many messages is not acceptable. Particularly when there is a chat list, and a number of computer user groups out there whose purpose it is to discuss the items that are not on topic for this list.

In regards to repetitive messages, Groups.io has a search function. If we all try to do the best we can to look up information ahead of time, by Googling or on groups.io, then we can minimize the number of messages to this list, particularly the very repetitive messages. Yes, I know users can hit delete, but some users have bandwidth limitations, and it becomes easy to miss important content when we get such into the habit of deleting things because they are asked very often, and/or they are off-topic. I don't want to discourage individuals from asking questions, but I do want to encourage users not to treat this list, and by extension list members, as their own personal tutors of whom they can ask anything and everything, repeatedly.

Finally, Brian is the list moderator, and as such, he deserves your respect as I do, for volunteering for this position and doing it often without being thanked. We are open to feedback, criticism, or whatever else you want to throw at us, but I would ask that it is done in a respectful manner, always, with the consideration that we are humans, with feelings, and we are apt to get things wrong because humans make mistakes. Please point it out to us when you disagree. Please do it in a respectful manner. And please do it on the owner e-mail address. Doing it on the main thread causes too many messages, often that don't have any relation to NVDA, thus are of no concern to list members. When a thread is locked, please do not restart it. When a moderator states that a topic should come to an end, please let it die. If you disagree, please send an e-mail to the Owner address, and you will get a response either from me, or from Brian, and if it concerns the entire list, you will get a response in the form of a letter to the entire list, such as this one is. It is never acceptable to ignore the closure of a thread by starting a new one.

IUn closing, I am directing Brian to begin enforcement of the rules and guidelines as set forth in my last e-mail and as summarized in this e-mail beginning Sunday, Apr 14. On that day, members repeatedly posting off-topic messages will be placed on a moderated status. Members posting the occasional off-topic thread may have the thread closed, with the request that it continues on the chat list, or in another more appropriate venue. Members posting questions which are often repeated will be strongly encouraged to use the archives. We may consider putting together an FAQ, which is sent out with the list guidelines, answering many of these questions. If anyone wishes to help out with this, please let me know.

If you have read this far, thank you. I hope, that with your help, we can scale back the thread hijacking, the off-topic messages, and the many repetitive posts in order to make this place a more inviting community for everyone who wishes to learn about, or help out with NVDA. Thank you for being part of this list, and thank you for your contributions. I hope they will continue. If, after you read this far, you choose to leave the list, however, please do so, please don't announce it before you leave because I don't care that you are leaving, and please feel free to return if you wish at a later time.

What happens if you use the install option when the portable version is running.  I don't know how you get to it in the new interface.  I don't run a version with that interface, though I'd like to to see what its like, but I don't have a machine that can run it as my machines are set up now.

At any rate, in the old interface, the option is in the tools menu.  If you can successfully run the install option, you will have an installed copy.

I don't know anything about user profiles so I don't know if that is the problem.  But what I find interesting is that you don't even get to the point where NVDA is running for the talking install.  That is actually the portable version running, though you haven't yet approved the license and told it whether you want to keep running it, create a portable version, or install.  I wonder if a user profile would matter at such an early stage where it is running as a portable version to be used as a talking installer.  I don't have the technical knowledge to assess that question but, having said that, it doesn't sound plausible to me.  Maybe some others with enough technical knowledge to make a reasonable guess about the situation will comment further on this interesting problem.

    Hi all,

I just got off the phone with the MS Disability Desk.  They are offering me
to options to get NVDA installed on my Dell laptop.  Change user profiles or
do a clean install.  So, unless someone tells me otherwise, I will just do
without NVDA on this particular machine for a few months.  Later, I will
consider a fresh install of Windows.  But, I got burned twice before when MS
changed user profiles on two of my PC's so I do not think I want to try for
a third time.  I would try it myself but it is a bit over my head...maybe a
lot over when it comes to know what and how to move everything over to the
new user profile.

Again, I am extremely grateful for so many people joining in to work toward
a solution.  And, this Dell will eventually get a fresh install.

All, have an awesome night,,

First, the good news.  My Dell laptop made it through the Windows10 repair
and is snappier than ever.

Now, the bad.  I still can't get NVDA to install.

The first MS tech support person that I spoke with earlier today said that
she could create another user profile and install NVDA and I wouldn't need
to switch profiles.  Actually, I basically do not even understand  very much
about profiles but, I am about to call the MS  Disability Desk for the third

I'll post more information here later because so many of you spent so much

Re: say all isn't working

hello.
first, try with espeak.
i believe that the problem is screen saver!
found and set it to none in control panel that can read books even
with hundreds of pages!

First off first post to the group so hello.

I am on a Surface Book laptop and my Say all isn't working. For example if
I am in Firefox and hit say all it will read me a paragraph or so or a page
or 2 if I am in Kindle then it stops. When I hit the say all command again
it starts again from where it started previously and reads the same amount.

I have the latest version of NVDA, my keyboard is set to laptop, and the
system has been restarted multiple times. I have even tried each of the
different review modes with 0 success. What am I missing?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: question on win 10 and nvda announcing program

Gene

My guess is that it announces it before the profile has the chance to stop speech.  There is no setting to have the titles of programs not be announced when the program runs.  You could stop speech before you tell the computer to play the songs or you could use the speech dictionary to make Groove Music not be spoken.  But then, it would never be spoken.

Subject: [nvda] question on win 10 and nvda announcing program

Hello there,

I was wondering if there is a setting somewhere to have nvda NOT announce the program title when it is lost?

Here is the scenario.

Windows ten

I have a profile setup to have no speech when groove music is active,

However when I press enter on an mp3, the computer announces groove music and then starts the song and then nvda goes silent as wanted.

Is there a way to have it not announce the groove music title?

Thanks

rich

The instructor is sighted and has taken it upon himself to learn NVDA
on-the-fly to teach sound designing using reaper, enjoy!

transfering music onto iPad with NVDA and latest iTunes

Armando Maldonado

Hello, I had just burned some CDS for mom which are not available on any music streaming services such as spotify, apple Music, etc. My question, is there an easy way to transfer what I converted from her cds onto her iPad using the latest iTunes 12.9.4? Any help is appreciated.

Re: say all isn't working

What synthesizer are you using?  It sounds to me like some sort of tracking problem and the first thing I test is what happens with a different synthesizer.  I vaguely seem to recall that a certain synthesizer doesn't work properly with say all.

Capslock + A is what I normally use but I have tried both.  Down arrow just reads the next line and a does what I explained before.

Are you using CapsLock+A or CapsLock+downArrow?
