Re: Reading word documents that are flagged as read-only

I think the only way is to use the speech dictionary to stop the phrase from being spoken.  But there may be no way to stop it from being spoken universally so you might want to do this in the temporary dictionary so the entry won't be retained beyond the current NVDA session.

Hello all

I have been searching back through messages to find the answer to this one because I am sure it has come up, but I can't track it down.

How do you make notifications that pop up in windows 10 go away? These are the regular visible notifactions.

Thanks,

Gene and Marcio,

If you look at the original notice, all of the things listed are suggestions, and cannot be enforced.

It is a baseline expectation, in this day and age, that participants on e-mail lists and the internet have the basic skills on using both, and the skills that they don't have that they ask about.   It is not unreasonable, in any way, to expect members of this group or any other with an online archive to avail themselves of the content in same and, indeed, should be an expectation.  It is far from difficult after one has learned how to do it, and it's easy to teach as well.

We cannot enforce anything, really, other than topic location.   The rest are things each and every member needs to think about, particularly if they wish to conform themselves to the standards commonly applied across the internet with regard to lists and list archives, and I believe that most will.   Help is available, via asking for it on the Chat subgroup, to anyone needing it with any of these things.  I hope people who need the assistance will ask, because there are many members willing and able to assist them with anything they ask about.

F6 doing the same thing in Firefox seems to be a Firefox specific use of the F6 key.

Gene,
Very well said.
Now, I'd just like to add that, if this policy really is going to be implemented, then the footer attached to each message sent to this group must change to include step by step instructions on how tosearch using the group archive.
Even so, in my view, people usually won't even get to this point and, as such, no one is going to read these instructions.
So I really guess we should leave things well alone as they are.
Actually, it's been a while since I'm on this list and, to be honest, I've never seen any complaint regarding this. So why?

It means that the installer should run silently in the background - so no windows popping up or any user interaction with the installer. It's very useful when deploying applications to managed machines as it prevents the user from interacting with the installation and potentially causing issues.

Update: I've found that the uninstaller can be run silently with the '/S' and '/SD' switches (case sensitive).

The uninstaller is based on Nullsoft which has the following commands: http://www.silentinstall.org/nsis

Re: I Can't get the latest version of NVDA to install

What happens if you use the install option when the portable version is running.  I don't know how you get to it in the new interface.  I don't run a version with that interface, though I'd like to to see what its like, but I don't have a machine that can run it as my machines are set up now.

At any rate, in the old interface, the option is in the tools menu.  If you can successfully run the install option, you will have an installed copy.

I’ll tell you what I just did.  I created a portible copy of NVDA with a working laptop and put it on a thumb drive.  Then I put it in to a folder on the not working right, Dell.  Now I finally have NVDA on the Dell PC plus I can use the NVDA portible thumb drive anywhere.

Guess there’s more than one way to get the job done.  Its just so very weird...

I don't know anything about user profiles so I don't know if that is the problem.  But what I find interesting is that you don't even get to the point where NVDA is running for the talking install.  That is actually the portable version running, though you haven't yet approved the license and told it whether you want to keep running it, create a portable version, or install.  I wonder if a user profile would matter at such an early stage where it is running as a portable version to be used as a talking installer.  I don't have the technical knowledge to assess that question but, having said that, it doesn't sound plausible to me.  Maybe some others with enough technical knowledge to make a reasonable guess about the situation will comment further on this interesting problem.

    Hi all,

I just got off the phone with the MS Disability Desk.  They are offering me
to options to get NVDA installed on my Dell laptop.  Change user profiles or
do a clean install.  So, unless someone tells me otherwise, I will just do
without NVDA on this particular machine for a few months.  Later, I will
consider a fresh install of Windows.  But, I got burned twice before when MS
changed user profiles on two of my PC's so I do not think I want to try for
a third time.  I would try it myself but it is a bit over my head...maybe a
lot over when it comes to know what and how to move everything over to the
new user profile.

Again, I am extremely grateful for so many people joining in to work toward
a solution.  And, this Dell will eventually get a fresh install.

All, have an awesome night,,

First, the good news.  My Dell laptop made it through the Windows10 repair
and is snappier than ever.

Now, the bad.  I still can't get NVDA to install.

The first MS tech support person that I spoke with earlier today said that
she could create another user profile and install NVDA and I wouldn't need
to switch profiles.  Actually, I basically do not even understand  very much
about profiles but, I am about to call the MS  Disability Desk for the third
time today and try one more time for installing NVDA.

I'll post more information here later because so many of you spent so much
time on this.

I use m-dashes a lot and I use the ALT+0151 and it inserts them everywhere I've tried ... Notepad, Word, emails, this email — for example.

If the Alt number pad keystroke isn't workikng for you do you have your num lock key on and are you typing it on the separate number pad rather than the number row above the letters? It does need to be typed on the number pad and with num lock active.

also, like with any Alt shortcut, you do need to leave the ALT key pressed down while typing 0, 1, 5, and 1 in turn. I'd be surprised if it isn't working unless it is something specific to the program you're typing in.

Hope that helps :)

It makes life a whole lot less annoying.

Officially due to security constraints in windows autorun of any old software from portable media is not allowed, but I'm sure you realise this. In any case it would most certainly not work everywhere as most communal computers are locked down solid. I only use the portable version if I cannot get one to install as in Windows 10 access to many items is not possible making it less useful than an installed version.

I now have the portable version on a thumb drive, but is it possible to get
NVDA to start when inserting the drive? If so, how?

Thanks again.
