Possible Bug with 2019.1 - crashes Windows Explorer

Pettyjohn, Chris G. (FTC)

Hi,
When NVDA v2019.1 is running, moving the focus/mouse pointer into a Windows Explorer window, with the physical mouse, causes Windows Explorer to crash and restart. The exact message is "Windows Explorer has stopped working.  Windows can try to restart the program." and there is a Restart button.  This does not happen when NVDA is turned off.  And I'm pretty sure this wasn't happening to me in any of the prior versions of NVDA. It also does not happen when using the keyboard to navigate Windows Explorer.  Only with the physical mouse.

I can replicate this every time i try. I thought maybe i messed something up with the update so I uninstalled NVDA entirely and reinstalled version 2019.1.  I'm running a Windows 7 laptop.

Steps to replicate.
1. With NVDA on,  click the Windows Start button
2. When the Start Menu opens move the mouse into it like you are going to select a program to run.
3. For me, as soon as the mouse moves off the Start button and travels into the Windows Explorer window  a pop up box appears with crash error.

Again, if i press the Windows key and then use the arrows to navigate the Start Menu nothing happens.  The crash only occurs with the mouse movement.

Another interesting test is I open the Start Menu with the keyboard, navigate to a program with the arrow keys and then move the mouse into the menu using NVDA + / and then press enter.  No error.  Only when i move the mouse pointer with touchpad or  mouse.

Maybe it's just something quirky within my machine. I dunno.

Re: Request: require assistance make NVDA read the status bar in file explorer of windows ten

Chris Mullins

Hi

F6 will read the Status Bar provided it has been switched on in the File and folder options, view tab, advanced settings.  It is near the top of the page and f6 will cycle through various elements of the File Explorer display, including “Status Bar”.  It only describes the display format used on the Explorer page and suggests a keystroke of Ctrl+Shift+6 which I can’t get to work.  The “Status Line” (as referenced by NVDA) is not found by NVDA, irrestpective of whether status bar is switched on or not.  Virtual review does show that there is information at the bottom of the screen consisting of the number  of items in folder and how many are selected but this is not present when the status Bar is switched off.

The nvda+end keystroke to read the Status Line in Word 2007 seems to work OK as it does when using Ed-Sharp.  In Excel 2007, it says “Ready 100 percent” then freezes and I had to alt+f4 out of Excel before speech resumed.  I retried Excel with no add-ons active and the status line was spoken OK.  I cannot get the nvda+end command to work in Outlook 2007 with or without add-ons active.

Conclusion: Status line reading functionality is a bit flakey and is possibly compromised by add-ons.

Cheers

Chris       .  .

Hi.

It's much more convoluted to do it this way. I would consider myself to be an advanced user of NVDA, yet I found it difficult to find it. I could offer up another solution in the form of the Virtual Review add-on. When it is installed, press NVDA+Control+W while in Windows/File Explorer.

Although it is a very basic program and does not have the more recent, copyrighted, versions of the Bible, it is the best I have found. However, having recently moved to a new computer and a new version of Windows 10, I now have some difficulty in navigating through a list of passages in a Find window. On the old computer, I could simply arrow my way through the list and use the tab key to move to the fields that allow me to do a new search. Now I have to use the number pad to navigate through the list of found passages and I cannot tab out of that list.

I suppose you're using MS Office. I don't have an answer for you there, but I have run into this same thing using OpenOffice.
In OpenOffice, the last time I had to do columns, I first pretended I was doing the work on separate pages, using a manual page break to split the two where desired. So with column 1 on page 1, and column 2 on page 2, I then reformatted the document into columns, which automatically looked at the separate pages as separate columns.

This is rather a brittle solution, and I have grave doubts that it will work for MS Office, but it did work for my single page, double column, landscaped documents.

unable to hear search text in iTunes

Giles Turnbull

Hi all,

this has, for me, always been the case. When I want to search on iTunes for a track or album or podcast, NVDA reads the words I type as I'd expect but if I want to arrow backwards to change a word or correct a typo NVDA does not speak the individual letters like it would in an Internet search.

Is there any kind of iTunes setting that can enable this, or any NVDA setting that might allow it?

Thanks for any ideas :)

Giles

Hi,

I need to know the following please:

  1. NvDA version
  2. Version of the add-on you’ve got.
  3. While using GoldWave, press Control+NVDA+F1 and tell me what NVDA says exactly.

Ie you can never get to the others as they don't really exist. Subject: [nvda] Firefox's extensions' section: The Saga goes on

Hello guys,
Quite a while ago I posted about an issue regarding Firefox working with
NVDA, where these little guys weren't wanting to read properly the
options - plugins, extensions and such - as we went through them.
Well as said before by Brian - or at least one of the Brians we have
here right now (LOL) - this is fortunately fixed, for what I'm
infinitely thankful.
Trouble is, now when navigating through the options, I'm hearing
something like that:
Plugins - 1 of 7
Extensions - 2 of 7
And so on until the fourth item.
And here's where thing gets weird. I just can't keep arrowing down to
see the other 3 options that would be there according with the NVDA
items' numbering.
So, all of this to ask, is anyone having this behavior using the latest
Firefox version?
That's all guys.
Thanks.

Cheers,
Marcio

Re: NVDA Alpha: Where can I download it?

Brian,
As I mentioned just now, this is exactly what I did - I created a shortcut for it :)
Yep, I saw on that page, if you just use a Beta version you'll have the pain of having to redownload it at least whenever an official version of NVDA hits your machine.
It's not a big deal, anyway :)

There used to be, I have to admit that I now have a shortcut to.
https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/

Note that you can only use the Alpha on this page now, as if you download the beta latest it then auto updated back to stable if you let it.

P.S.: Looking through Google results, I found the link to the page for
the Alpha and Beta versions.
I just wanted to know, by accessing http://nvda-project.org, where one
should go to get access to this same page I just found googling for
"NVDA Alpha". Is there a way?

Hello guys,
It's been a while since I became an NVDA Alpha user.
Today, though, I decided I'll go back to NVDA Stable channel.
So, my question is: if I want to become an Alpha again, or even a
Beta, where can I choose between these options?
Thanks :)

Re: NVDA Alpha: Where can I download it?

Ollie,
Actually, as I'm not that good with bookmarks, I did another thing.
I created an URL shortcut for it.
You know? It's been a while since I hadn't messing with this "old but gold" option, I even had forgotten that something like this would exist! LOL

No idea, Marcio. I bookmarked years ago, when the development versions were still called "Snapshots"...

Bookmark it; it's your best bet.

Ollie,
Thanks 😊
This is the link I found when I googled for "nvda alpha".
Would you know whether one can access this same link just by going to the NVDA's webpage?
In other words, if I go to http://nvaccess.org, is there a section so I can click to go direct to this link?

Thanks again :)

Re: Podcast website accessibility

Not most websites, no, because, when you start to dive into audio fiction, you learn that creators have a ton of empty links on their sites! Fortunately, a site called pod link, https://pod.link/ will provide the subscribe URL's so I can just copy and paste into an email for later clicking and browsing. I hate talk show podcasts, so consume a lot of audio fiction. Titles are either obscure or very common, so want to make absolutely sure I am getting the right audio drama or satire or fictional documentary or play.
