Re: Why Windows OneCore voices Over eSpeak NG

Actually it's happening for a while now.
Well, you still can change the voice to Espeak then save the settings, nothing hard, not really :)

Hi,

I don’t know when this was done, but NVDA is now defaulting to the Windows OneCore voices rather than eSpeak NG when it is first installed on Windows 10. It also does this on secure screens.

This is really annoying to me as I find the Windows OneCore voices extremely annoying in that they are incredibly slow and laggy. Is it possible to force NVDA to default back to eSpeak NG without copying my entire NVDA configuration over?

Thanks in Advance,

I’d like to change the way NVDA reads information about a cell when moving through a spreadsheet in Excel.

Now NVDA reads the information within the cell, then the coordinates, then the column/row header info.

I’d like to have it read column/row headers before cell coordinates. I tried turning off cell coordinates and that messed up the reading of column headers. They no longer were read if cell coordinates were turned off.

I need to play with this a bit more as I changed a couple other things as well and now need to narrow this down but should tables be set to on or off? I currently have them set for on with Excel and off with everything else.

OK, answered my own issue here. After changing a document setting, not only do you need to remember to hit Apply before OK but also tab away from the app and come back to see the changes.

Turning off cell coordinates but keeping tables on worked and now I have a lovely, easy to read spreadsheet.

Braille Me add-on not working

Jenine Stanley <jenine@...>

I’ve been having difficulty with this since the last firmware update of the Braille Me, add-on not working and display not being recognized by NVDA.

I’m sure this is a Braille Me issue and not and NVDA one but just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if so, how did you resolve it?

I’m considering going back to factory reset and trying a reinstall of the firmware for the Braille Me. When it worked, it was beyond awesome with NVDA.

Sorry I wasn’t clear. You are correct in that when I press NVDA+Shift+c it says “Set A1 as column header. It does not read the headers when I navigate though and I will now go try your fix as I’m sure that’s what’s wrong here. I had a feeling it was a setting.

And this is why we love NVDA! Thanks.

Hi Jenine,

When you say you are setting the column header with NVDA+control+c and nothing happens, do you mean NVDA reads nothing when you press NVDA+control+c to set the header, or it's not reading the header as you navigate around your spreadsheet?

When you press NVDA+control+c, NVDA should report: "Set A1 as start of column headers" (where I had the focus in A1 when I pressed the command).  If that isn't being read, is the focus on a cell in Excel AND you are not editing the cell?  If you have started typing something in the cell or pressed F2 to edit it, Excel will be in edit mode and you won't be able to set the header until you finish (enter) or cancel (escape) editing that cell.

If it's not reporting headers as you navigate, then press NVDA+control+d to open NVDA's document formatting settings, and be sure that "Row / Column headers" is checked (press alt+e until the focus jumps to that option).

Kind regards

Quentin.

I use the command to set a column header, or row header but more often column header, and nothing happens. I’m using NVDA+shift+C.

This issue happens no matter the size of the spreadsheet. I’ve tried making it an official table first then choosing the column headers and that doesn’t seem to have an effect. Is there something that’s changed about Excel, a command or setting I need to change?

Otherwise, I love NVDA with Excel! Can’t say that loudly enough.

Hi all,

When adding bullets, NVDA doesn't read them on some of the computers I am
using with students in class and others it does.

I have installed the reportSymbols-2.1.nvda-addon add-on and still it
doesn't announce them.

I also checked " document formatting but didn't find anything to help in
this situation. But I am sure it is something I am not noticing. That is
why I come to you wizards.

Have a great day.

Re: NVDA and LastPass

Unless you use an add-on, there may not be a way to do this in Chrome, at least not that doesn't remove much more than you want.  Incognito mode removes a good deal more than history.

I did some searching and I found an article about two add-ons you can use.  I explained earlier why I think it’s a bad idea but if you want to try it, I'll provide the link.

I have no idea if the add-ons are accessible.

Also, this article is three or more years old and the ability to delete history on exit may have been added to Chrome since then.  But I found two or three articles from 2017 discussing the lack of this feature and nothing indicating it has been added, so I rather doubt it.

I would imagine there is a way, but  cleaning history automatically may not be a good idea.  there are times when I don't book mark something and I find I unexpectedly want to return to the page.  Also, if you rely at all on visited links to find things quickly, every time you clear history, it erases all links shown as visited.  You generally shouldn't have problems if you don't clear history.  Every so often, I see a problem that is solved by clearing history.  Considering how infrequently I see that this solved a problem, I conclude that it is rare that it causes a problem and keeping history has real benefits.  there is such a thing as too much automation.

Using Internet Explorer just because history is automaticallly cleared, even after Microsoft's own security officer advised people not to use it is not, what I consider giving security proper importance.  I have nothing against using it on sites where it works better than other browsers but it’s a bad idea to use it for general browsing.

The original message, which I no longer have,  said that the person rebooted.  That makes me quite confident that the problem is something like File Explorer crashing.  If this is a rare event, there is nothing to worry about.

Did it just happen once?  If so, I wouldn't worry about it.  it sounds like something crashed in Windows such as File Explorer.  I'm very doubtful that this has anything to do with NVDA.  I can get pretty much stuck as you did if I terminate what is called file Explorer in
Windows 10.  Its called Windows Explorer in other versions.  If it crashes, you can't do much of anything.

I can't think of anything to suggest (diid you try restarting NVDA only?)  It may have been a wider crash in Windows itself.

If you're reading this still using NVDA for the FIRST time after that happened, you should have an nvda-old.log in your %temp% directory.  That is the log from the previous time NVDA ran.  If you could send me that log to info@..., I can have a look and see if there is anything telling in there.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Good afternoon list; marv here.  Running the latest update of nvda and windows 10.  Nvda got stuck on the taskbar and I had to restart my computer; probably a minor issue, just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem.

Yes,    I can confirm that.  I tried to get into my food safe online class. I could not get at the class so I can study for the final exam. I called the head guy to say I can only see the exam. He said to clean my Chrome history. I did and finding out I may get another extension until May. Is there a way where you can clean the history on Chrome like you can with IE? When you leave IE. You can set the history to leave as you close it.  How can one set Chrome to clean history? Then you don’t have to go to the history to manually clean it. I did today. Lucky I don’t use much on chrome. Just my news global channel and the food safe class.  If I want to do other things I go to IE Cause I have IE to clean the history automatically.  I wonder if you can do the same with Chrome?

Just a note, I think if you clear your history, those keyboard shortcuts you made, go away.

Using chrome, if you go to the extension details,  for last pass, you can set them up in there.

Hi, It works grate in chrome.

You can set up hotkeys for things like generating passwords.

Hi All,

I would be interested if anyone has experience with the LastPass software. I need to use it for work and am interested in accessibility with NVDA.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks,

Did it just happen once?  If so, I wouldn't worry about it.  it sounds like something crashed in Windows such as File Explorer.  I'm very doubtful that this has anything to do with NVDA.  I can get pretty much stuck as you did if I terminate what is called file Explorer in
Windows 10.  Its called Windows Explorer in other versions.  If it crashes, you can't do much of anything.
