There is a much easier approach from within Narrator, but you need to be running one of the post-1809 insider builds. From within Narrattor's settings, accessed by control+windows+N, tab to "Get More Voices". There, you will be presented with a list box containing all the installed languages, with all available voices installed for each language. Go through the list, pressing spacebar to select any item you wish to install; then active the "add" button and all your selections will be installed. This way, there is no need to guess whether a language includes a text-to-speech component.

Re: tabs on web page

I'm not sure but the first thing I'd say to try is to make sure you are in object navigation mode.  Issue the command numpad insert numpad 1 until you hear either that you are in object navigation or you hear an announcement something like no previous navigation mode.

Then follow the entire procedure you described and see what happens.

Re: RES: [nvda] How to activate clickable elements?

Gene

If you are using the desktop layout, you must use numpad enter with the NVDA key to execute this command.  It performs the default action on a control.

If you are using the laptop layout, you can use NVDA key with enter on the main keyboard to execute the same command.  In the laptop layout, you can use NVDA key with either enter key, but as I said, using the desktop layout, you must use numpad enter..

Hello guys,
Just yesterday, on another list I am in, there was a person asking how to deal with clickable elements on a page.
Well, main difference between us is that the person wanted to know how to do it with JAWS and I'm using NVDA, of course.
I gave a reply saying that I was hoping the way of dealing with these elements would be the same both using JAWS and NVDA, then I would be waiting for answers.
Trouble is, no answer at all thus far. Nor about JAWS nor NVDA.
So there we are. How to deal with these elements using our favorite screen reader ever? :)

Thanks in advance guys

Navigating by Sentence with Microsoft UI Automation

Abbie Taylor <abbietaylor945@...>

With Microsoft UI Automation enabled, navigating by sentence in Word with Alt plus Down Arrow doesn’t work as it should. NVDA moves to the next sentence but doesn’t read it. When I disable Microsoft UI Automation, this feature behaves normally.

Re: Outlook (Office 365) not reading message list in NVDA 2019.1 #winten1803

I'm making a point of it now to keep a trail of the last several versions of NVDA as portables, creating each just before I apply the latest update.  It makes life much easier when one needs to check whether a bug has crept in with NVDA and, if so, which version (as there have been times when I just hadn't hit it in an earlier version because I wasn't doing whatever it is that triggers the bug).

Re: column/row headers not reading in Excel 2013

HI Quinton,

Sorry I wasn’t clear. You are correct in that when I press NVDA+Shift+c it says “Set A1 as column header. It does not read the headers when I navigate though and I will now go try your fix as I’m sure that’s what’s wrong here. I had a feeling it was a setting.

And this is why we love NVDA! Thanks.

Hi Jenine,

When you say you are setting the column header with NVDA+control+c and nothing happens, do you mean NVDA reads nothing when you press NVDA+control+c to set the header, or it's not reading the header as you navigate around your spreadsheet?

When you press NVDA+control+c, NVDA should report: "Set A1 as start of column headers" (where I had the focus in A1 when I pressed the command).  If that isn't being read, is the focus on a cell in Excel AND you are not editing the cell?  If you have started typing something in the cell or pressed F2 to edit it, Excel will be in edit mode and you won't be able to set the header until you finish (enter) or cancel (escape) editing that cell.

If it's not reporting headers as you navigate, then press NVDA+control+d to open NVDA's document formatting settings, and be sure that "Row / Column headers" is checked (press alt+e until the focus jumps to that option).

Kind regards

Quentin.

I use the command to set a column header, or row header but more often column header, and nothing happens. I’m using NVDA+shift+C.

This issue happens no matter the size of the spreadsheet. I’ve tried making it an official table first then choosing the column headers and that doesn’t seem to have an effect. Is there something that’s changed about Excel, a command or setting I need to change?

Otherwise, I love NVDA with Excel! Can’t say that loudly enough.

I always keep an older copy as a portable with a shortcut on the desktop with a little file to shut the running copy and start the new one. Instant comparisons.
I have not got a sub to 365, so cannot help with this current crop of problems, but Outlook seems to hav been second only to Skype for induced problems through Microsoft.
I find it amusing that using this out of date copy of Outlook Express cludged to run in windows 7, seems to have fewer problems than recent versions of paid for software or the windows email client.

Corbb,

By the way, if you have the time it's worth testing if the same issue is occurring in earlier versions of NVDA, or just 2019.1. I was given this link yesterday to download 2018.4.1:
https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/releases/2018.4.1/nvda_2018.4.1.exe

You don't have to install it over your existing 2019.1 copy, but fire it up and have it make a portable copy instead, then fire up the portable copy. It can help a great deal to determine if the issue has crept in with the latest release or predates it.

Feedback Hub feedback as well as contacting the Microsoft Disability Answer desk.   And I'd think both would be important.

I haven't played with this with Narrator at all, so can't answer that part.

As was mentioned earlier, one downloads them.

How would one rattle Microsofts cage on this. The question is, does Narrator work?

That isn't a good work around but I brought it up in case someone needs to work with a list. It sounds as though you can do so in that tedious way.

Gene,

This is apparently an issue of very long standing, and it impacts JAWS, too. I added a comment to the following NVDA issue on Github:
NVDA does not read members of distribution lists in at least Outlook 2007, 2010 and 2013

This issue was opened in 2012, and was still being tracked in 2017, and I did "cage rattling" to see if anything is still being looked into with regard to it.

and there is another one, also still open, clearly related: Outlook: Distribution Lists not or incorrectly Read

I'm surprised that this has remained unresolved for this long a period, and all appearances are that it's an issue on the Outlook side, not the screen reader side.

You can jump out of the list to the list name, then back into the member list and it will read the member you were last focused on, but this is just untenable if you're working with Contact Groups (formerly Distribution Lists) of any size.

nvda got stuck on taskbar

marvin kotler

Good afternoon list; marv here.  Running the latest update of nvda and windows 10.  Nvda got stuck on the taskbar and I had to restart my computer; probably a minor issue, just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem.
