Now I'm confused.  What is it that you are experiencing NVDA "not seeing"?

It sounds like you've figured out how Downloads is now working subsequent to the most recent changes.  And I agree with you that this is one of those instances where it really feels like change for change's sake.  What's been done makes more steps needed to accomplish the same task and violates the almost sacrosanct UI design principle of simplify, simplify, simplify.

What menus can’t you see?  As far as I know, I can see everything.

Re: NVDA and Edge Chromium

A report on my findings with NVDA 2020.4 and MS-Edge Version 90.0.818.56 (Official build) (64-bit)

If I activate the link I supplied, or trigger any download link this is what happens:

1. NVDA announces the name of the file to be downloaded, very quickly followed by
2. "File requires attention, press CTRL+J to go to downloads."  You have to do this in order to continue through the download process.
3. After having hit CTRL+J, NVDA announces, "Recent download list clickable with one items open button save as split button more options."  As an aside to the developers, it would be nice if punctuation were introduced into that announcement such that "open button" and "save as split button" were read as the two options, rather than as a stream of words.  A period after the word Items, and a comma after each word "button" would probably cause this to occur.
4. Focus is on the open button, but since I want to save, I tab to the Save As split button.  If you just activate it, you get a standard Save As dialog.  If you go to the split part of the split button and activate that, you get the option to Save, which I imagine would just dump the file straight into your designated downloads folder.  I activated Save As because I always want to choose the save location for any file I'm downloading, even if the place I save it is the Downloads folder.

I haven't seen anything in Edge settings that I was able to tweak to get the previous behavior of a direct appearance of the Save As dialog upon activation of the link to occur.  That doesn't mean there may not be some magic combination of settings, but I have not as yet been able to determine what those are.

By the way, when you hit that CTRL+J you are not opening the conventional Downloads manager, but are throwing focus to the "mini manager dialog" that I had previously described as appearing just beneath the control bar on the browser.

This topic is now locked.  And topics like it will be promptly deleted in the future.

We have the NVDA Chat Subgroup for this sort of request, and it is the only place it should have been placed (in our sphere, anyway).

It's long past time that when someone recognizes that something is off-topic before they even send the message that they DON'T SEND IT TO BEGIN WITH.

I have a problem with Spotify using NVDA. I don't know, if You have both problem sometimes with new interface in Spotify for Windows.

After moving to playlist tab, there is nothing read in main section with NVDA, only blank section (landmark). I don't know, if anybody uses Spotify. I have discussed this issue with Spotify developers, but We can't solve It.

Maybe this is just only My problem, maybe not. If somebody have Spotify please, answer to this message, because We'll move further to solve this problem.

locked ot studio recorder off list please

Hi.

This is to anyone that has studio recorder.

I need someone to email me off list basically, how did you buy it from aph.

I am obviously not in america, and I would prefer to not have to call a us number just to buy it, and I would like to use paypal.

If I can't while a bit annoying thats ok to I guess but after using a pirated, virus ridden  copy for a  few years whilst at school I told myself I'd buy it once I had the cash.

Due to covid19 and the fact I have everything I need this year, I do have the cash at this moment and time.

I'm just not sure how to go about buying it.

Please respond off list because this is quite off topic.

Oh my only ask is that only respond if you actually know how or have done it in the past I don't want a flame to start here or someone causing me to lose it by saying something else and please don't keep it on here please.

Thanks.

Re: NVDA and APA Style

Kelly, Kathleen

From Giles Turnbull:

when I needed to use APA style for the citations and for the
references section of my Masters assignments, I changed the
Punctuation / symbol level to All in the speech settings, and turned
Font Attributes on in the Document Formatting section.

However, I agree that it can be information overload! What I did was
to set up a profile called Formatting where those are the settings.
Then my normal configuration didn't have that level of detail but I
could turn the Formatting profile on when I did need it.

I guess that, if it's too much information even doing it that way,
then your best option would be to turn the Font Attributes on because
you'll need those to make sure that whatever needs to be bold or
itallic is bold or itallic, and then read each reference character by
character so you can hear if there are dashes and commas in the
correct places without having the Punctuation / symbol level set to
All.

A third option that might work for you is simply not to worry about
the bold and itallic aspects until you have finished the References
page. Then go through it line by line, selecting the text where it
needs to be bold or italic, and using the CTRL+b to make it bold, or
CTRL+i to make it itallic. Since NVDA says "Bold on" or "Bold off" and
"Italics on" or "Italics off", you can spend an editting session just
applying the correct formatting.

I did tell my course director that it was difficult for me, not being
able to see the formatting, and I think she told all of the tutors to
not mark me down if I didn't do the referencing section quite right :)

Re: NVDA and Edge Chromium

Edge, Firefox, and Vivaldi all seem to have changed very recently in terms of how they handle downloads.  All three are giving a little "pop-up" dialog in close proximity to the main menu, to its left, when doing many downloads.  Up until sometime over the last several days, those browsers, along with Chrome and Brave, were all opening Save As dialogs for me when I was doing a download.  Mind you, I have all my browsers set to ask me where to save when I download.

One of my tutorials is on my Google Drive at Doing a Windows 10 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows 10 ISO file

If I put the direct link in on Chrome or Brave, I still get the Save As dialog showing up.  I haven't had time to play with the changed browsers with a screen reader yet.

Re: NVDA and Edge Chromium

Your problems are far more numerous than mine.  The download problem is the only one I have.  I can access everything else with no problems.

If these were general problems, we would see an avalanche of complaints and discussion on various lists but I’ve seen none other than this thread.  I don’t know what the problem is so I won’t make further suggestions.

It will be interesting if we see reports from JAWS users but I doubt they will tell us anything useful, given the evident lack of people who have the problem who use NVDA.  The best test for your specific case would be for you to download a JAWS demo and see what happens on your machine, or if you don’t want to do that, see what happens when you use Narrator.

just to let you know, I replied to your question in the chat group because I saw it there before my main group digest arrived. I told you what I did when I needed to use APA style (I actually had the choice of APA or Chiago) when I did an MA in creative writing in the 2018/19 academic year. Let me know if you have any difficulty finding that :)

No problem :)

I didn't mean to push the material, I just like to make people aware it's there when questions come up which it answers, as often a simple answer here is fine, but that section in the book might have (and indeed does in this case) a lot more information on related features that users might find helpful.

All the best

You can navigate to the next heading at a particular level by pressing that level's number on the number row. So to jump to the next level 3 heading, you would press 3. As with all of these browse-mode shortcuts, you can jump backward by pressing Shift + <command>.

This is getting really, really old.  And I am speaking as moderator here.  We've gone through exactly this cycle elsewhere, and I want to nip it in the bud here.
