You actually can remove Windows components and add Windows components using PowerShell.  There are lots of tutorials out there about how to remove and reinstall the Edge browser.

I'd still just consider, Doing a Windows 10 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows 10 ISO file, which is easier and kills multiple potential issues with one fell swoop.

We're all in agreement that this is an issue with Windows rather than NVDA itself.

I didn’t know about the APA checker software, but I think  the professors wouldn’t have wanted us to use it anyway.  When I had to write psychology papers about 15 years ago, I proofed them using the JAWS “Check formatting” command.  I didn’t know about NVDA at the time, and I think it might have been developed around the time I graduated.  The university library had an online reference guide for the most common citation styles, but I don’t know if it still exists.

Re: faced 2 problems while using zoom with NVDA

Scott Salzman

Here's some additional follow-up to Sarah's suggestions. Apologies for all of this detail. I hope some of it may be helpful.

There's a "Save Chat" button, in the Chat window, under the "More Chat Options" button. You can use this button to save the chat at any time, as many times as you like during a Zoom meeting. NVDA does not announce anything when you press the "Save Chat" button, but if you tab backwards a few times, you'll land on a "Show in Folder" button, which will open a File Explorer window that has your saved chat text file.

It looks like this save chat function will save any updates to the same file, so you'll only have one saved chat file, for each meeting. Even if the function to automatically save chat at the end of the meeting has been enabled, it looks like that also updates the same file. So any time you open this file, it should contain all of the chat messages, as of the last time chat was saved in that meeting.

Note that in Zoom versions 4.5.0 or later, there is a setting under the "Meetings" tab, that would allow a host to "Prevent participants from saving chat". This setting is different from, and independent of the "Auto saving chats" setting, which only saves chat at the end of the meeting. Not surprisingly, if I start a Zoom meeting with the "Prevent participants from saving chat" setting enabled, I can't make it available during that meeting, even if I change the setting.

Thanks.

That's the problem I have with accessing things on Zoom, I can't seem to access anything until the chat is saved at the end of the meeting.
I can read messages, but I can't seem to copy them to the clipboard until the meeting is ended, when a text file pops up with the entire chat up to the point you copied.

Re: Using gmail with "Basic HTML view" vs. "standard view"

Justin Harford

Hello everyone I have been using Gmail with standard view now for more than 5 years, pretty much since I started working in nonprofit in 2014. So I guess that makes it longer. I think standard view works much better than basic HTML, but I have been tricked by the fact that when you go into a new inbox key commands are not automatically activated. Nimer great tips.

If you have had Gmail for very long, you probably have more than 10,000 messages in your inbox, and would probably never want to jump all the way to the end. But those were great tips for jumping to the end of the current view. Another one I just discovered is to press g then n or g then p  to view older or newer messages. I would encourage everyone to also take a look at the search feature. Press / and it automatically takes you to the edit bar. Press tab a couple times and enter on the advanced search button. I use this frequently.

I'm using latest NVDA with latest Google Chrome on Windows 10.

It will be interesting to see if Windows lets you install Edge over itself if you decide to try that.  You can't uninstall it which is why I am talking about installing over it.  I doubt that installing over the program will solve the problem.  It appears to be the result of a recent update.  I first noticed odd download behavior a number of days ago.  I don't download in Chrome much but a few days before, downloads were occurring just as I expected.

Perhaps Microsoft will correct this problem, if it is a general one.  I'll be curiously awaiting developments.

Re: NVDA and APA Style

Kathleen,

Also consider using APA Style checker software, which flags obvious errors.  I haven't had to write a paper in APA Style in 20 years now, but these were very useful when I did for catching "small errors" I might not otherwise have caught after reading and re-reading and re-reading until I was practically numb.

See:  https://duckduckgo.com/?q=apa+style+checker

I can't speak to accessibility for any of them, so that would be one of your jobs to determine which one or ones might be accessible.  But as a graduate student finding one that is could make your life much easier.

Also, a more general recommendation (that I know is sometimes hard to follow):  Try to write your papers far enough ahead of time that you can walk away from them for a few days (at a minimum) to over a week before going back and proofing them.  It makes it so much easier to see errors.  When in the heat of writing it's just so easy to see "what I meant to write" rather than "what I actually wrote" in many cases.  Mental "auto-correct" has amazing power when you're actively working on something.  After just a bit of time and distance, that power wanes, and that's a good thing as far as proofing goes.

Hi,

This is a brand new laptop for a customer.  I have just upgraded it to Windows 10 H2 and installed NVDA.

I have two identical laptops here, one works absolutely fine, and the other will not load the Onecore voices.

It appears in the list, but then says Error loading Synthesiser driver. It works with Espeak fine, but I think they would prefer the default voice.

Narrator speaks fine with it, and even works if I go into Speech settings in Windows and Preview the voice.

What I have tried so far is to completely remove and reinstall NVDA, including user settings.

I have also tried resetting the configuration with Control+NVDA+R three times.

Again, the synth appears in the list, but errors when loading.

I saw a similar message on this list from Louise, so the next thing I am going to try is to check compatibility settings in NVDA to make sure nothing is checked.  Other than that though, I am not sure what is going on here. Other than that, I’m almost ready to reset the PC, if no-one has any ideas.

Here is the log excerpt that I get when trying to load the synth:-

Hi all.

currently teamtalk 5.7.1 latest beta and stable build has an issue refferenced here.

https://github.com/BearWare/TeamTalk5/issues/869

A few people including myself have had an issue with the latest version.

It appears at least in preffs that saving preffs after changing sound devices which are always using default device or internal devices for whatever reason simply will not work.

Users do say it will hang for a long time and will possibly not come back.

For now I'd go back to the previous version of 5.6 if you really need the program to save settings.

The issue sadly does take nvda out forcing me to restart.

This is not in itself an issue as even if nvda did not freez I still wouldn't be able to use the program.

The log fragment etc is refferenced in the issue though I do want to get a teamtalk log if I can find out how to generate it.

I don't need teamtalk for the moment but just a heads up, if you want the latest classic there is a showstopping bug right now.

Basically what it boils down to is you can't save configuration at all!

Yep, I read that thread with interest.

I didn’t have that exact problem, mine was in the list, but there was an error loading the driver.

I since tried the SFC /Scannow and the Dism commands, but no errors were detected.

So I reset the PC, which was a lot quicker than trying to resolve the problem.

There are SAPI 5 versions of some of the voices that are also listed as OneCore.  In a recent thread, I learned that which voices also appear as SAPI 5 depends on which default language settings you have.  If I remember correctly, the problem I had with OneCore voices was that it didn’t appear correctly in the list of synthesizers although it loaded correctly when I was finally able to select it.  Compatibility with earlier versions of Windows had to be turned off from NVDA properties.  This was a while ago.

You could try removing the voices and adding them again

And RESTART the system

Subject: [nvda] Problem with Onecore voices on a Windows 10 laptop

INFO - core.main (16:48:49.235) - MainThread (5932):

Using configobj version 5.1.0 with validate version 1.0.1

ERROR - synthDriverHandler.setSynth (16:48:52.220) - MainThread (5932):

File "synthDrivers\oneCore.pyc", line 169, in __init__

File "synthDrivers\oneCore.pyc", line 476, in _getDefaultVoice

RuntimeError: No voices available

Of course, there are voices available, because they work with Narrator.

If anyone has any ideas, please do hit me with them.

Thanks.

All the best

Re: NVDA and Edge Chromium

I wouldn’t reinstall Windows 10 or get another copy or reset the computer.  This is a very small problem, just affecting downloads  and there are so many other browsers that can be used for this purpose that just using another one would make the most sense.  Evidently, the browser can be used for all other ;purposes as well as before.

I don’t know if Edge will let you install another copy of Edge over itself.

Recently, my download behavior changed in Edge as well.  I just use another browser for downloading.  The change in behavior is different than what you describe but it is annoying.  If enough others have undesirable changes, Microsoft will correct the problem.  Meanwhile, not every problem needs to be solved and [putting much time and effort into solving this one isn’t worth it.

Well try to find a copy of Microsoft edge at www.filehorse.com. Or try
resetting your windows 10 or you can format the hard drive Butt I would
try to get a copy of edge before trying any of these ideas to fix edge.
Try Microsoft's web site as well as filehorse.  Good luck

Re: teamtalk latest issues

Hi,

this is now fix, you can try a prerelease of next version including this fix here:

http://bearware.dk/beta/TeamTalk_v5.8.0.5038_Portable.zip

Thats good.

I managed to resolve the issue by starting teamtalk, setting the sound to none, hitting ok, restarting nvda, opening another instance.

doing the same thing, restarting nvda, tabbing to the other instance which simply was no longer frozen, kill the stuck instance, try to do things again but this time it worked properly and I can't seem to reproduce it anymore.

It doesn't matter anyway as long as the config gets mangled somehow as its set for what I need it for right now.

It will be good to get this fixed though.

Maybe you should report that.

I don't use teamtalk public servers though because my main use was for spaciffic servers I manually entered into site manager.

The biggest reason to get the later versions are usually codec and security updates.

Subject: [nvda] teamtalk latest issues

Hi all.

currently teamtalk 5.7.1 latest beta and stable build has an issue refferenced here.

https://github.com/BearWare/TeamTalk5/issues/869

Re: NVDA and APA Style

Hi!

The only way to deal with this situation is to use the braille display.

I am using the Chicago citation style, which is in my humble opinion more accessible to screen readers.

Best,

Zvonimir

GS seeks feedback on NVDA and APA Style, the writing/format citation style used in academic papers. I have turned on all the punctuation functions to get NVDA to read the parentheses, periods, and italics, etc. but it is creating an auditory overload. Ideas? Thanks.
