Serious issue with NVDA not reading menus and totally silent in Firefox and Chrome

Mallard

Hello all,

A friend of mine recently bought a HP laptop.

She experiences some really weird behaviours with NVDA.

When the Start key is pressed, no menu is read.

But that can be bypassed by using the Start button on the bar.

The main issue is that both Firefox and Chrome aer unreadable, and I-ve never seen anything like that in my life.

I tried to help her via Teamviewer, as she lives in a different town, and I was shocked.

How is it possible that NVDA doesn-t read browsers like that_

I-m not a techie at all, so have no idea of what to do and how to help her.

she-s a teacher and, with the Covid/19 lockdown active here in Italy, she needs to teach online. Not easy under these conditions.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ciao,

Ollie

I am going to try this today. Say a prayer because I am working with a gentleman who is technically challenged to the point that he is still figuring out where things are on his keyboard and he has been using a pc for over ten years.

Hi,

One possible explanation (and I found myself troubleshooting it on my own installation): corrupted add-on configuration file (yet again). To fix this:

  1. Open NVDA user configuration folder (you can do this from Start search box and typing “explore NVDA”).
  2. Delete a file named “remote.init”.
  3. Restart NVDA.

Cheers,

Joseph

Ah ok, yes I see.

Ok so to adjust the speech rate, first manually activate the profile, and then simply set the speed to what you want for say all.  Once you're done, manually deactivate the profile.  You can't use the synth settings ring while actually reading with say all.

Quentin.

I understand this logic behind, but anyway is it possible to embed some delay before fall back to original profile or other solution so we can save some time or I'm doing something wrong?

Re: changing reading speed on the fly in say all profile

That sounds like it should work (you don't specifically need to be in Word, you can edit the say all profile from anywhere)  When you created the profile and linked it to say all, did you manually activate it?  When you associate it with the say all trigger and try to OK, it states that and offers to manually activate it so you can edit it - as long as you did that and hadn't deactivated it before adjusting the speech rate, it should work.  Even if you have a profile for the specified program, when you press NVDA+down arrow / NVDA+a it should use the say all profile.

str:
- open e.g. word document
- create profile linked to word if already not
- create profile, which is link to say all trigger.
- go back to word
- change reading speed via synth ring
- start say all

expected result say all will use a new speed
actual behaveour: say all uses its own speed

So what can I do to use synth ring on say all? should I activate it manually via keyboard, but it would be very annoying, because it destroy trigger system.

thx for your help.

I had the same problem after installing Dropbox. In Word, a window with the title “Dropbox” was coming. After pressing the Alt key, and press ESC.

Probably a program you installed on your computer has installed the plug-in for MSWord.

Re: Elements List not working correctly in Slack

Quentin Christensen

Hi Martin,

The vast majority of Slack's interface is buttons and clickables, and really no links at all, except for in specific messages.

However, all the messages are within an ARIA application, which means that NVDA does not render this in browseMode, rather when focus goes inside the application, focus mode is used. This also therefore means that those links will not appear in NVDA's elements list.

The exception to this is when arrowing down to a particular message and then pressing tab, focus moves inside a document specific to the current message, and therefore browseMode can be used, though bounded only to that message content. Within this particular subdocument, NVDA's elements list can be used, and any links in that specific message will be listed.

The ARIA application around the message list was introduced sometime last year in the Slack app, so none of that is new, unless you happened to be using an old version of the app until just recently?

Regards

Quentin.

Do you have the same issue?

Re: NVDA and MS word

Quentin Christensen

It quite possibly would but it is probably also overkill :)

In your Word options (ALT+F then T) if you CONTROL+TAB down to "Add-ins", have a look on that screen and see what's there.  If you've got software you know has Word plug-ins, they'll be listed here.  There are probably other things you might or might not have specifically added but come with other programs like OneNote, or FoxIt Reader.

Looking at mine, there are a few random things I don't recognise like Date XML.  So just because you don't recognise something there, doesn't mean it's causing problems - although it's worth being aware of anything which is running while Office is running just because it could be slowing things down (Apparently my Date XML and a few others relate to some kind of office smart tag functionality which evidently is built-in to Office).

Otherwise, as Brian suggested, a screenshot might help here - if you press NVDA+T to read the title bar on that message, what does it say?  And can you navigate around it (arrows, tab, etc)?

Re: NVDA and MS word

Nevzat, it appears you're getting some sort of message, likely from
Microsoft Word itself. I seriously doubt this has anything to do
w/NVDA, really, other than the fact that NVDA is announcing it. It
would be good if you could ascertain what that window is saying.

Re: NVDA and MS word

Are you able to take a screenshot of that window, upload it somewhere, and post the link to it here?   It's really impossible to give any guidance without knowing what, precisely, is going on in that window.  If it won't read the contents to you that's even more critical.  What you're describing is not something I've encountered before.

conference software updates

Hi.

I wouldn't usually report any of this but since we are in lockdown mode over this virus I thought I'd do it.

Firstly for all of those expecting updates you will have noticed all updates bar essential updates are going out.

So sadly for those chrome users wanting the latest update there isn't a chrome update right now at least not yet.

For hp systems network and diagnostic software got updates as well as support software on applicable systems.

There was a small update for the codec guide, some camera and other non urgent apps.

Skype 8.5.0.93 is out for those that care.

The update landscape seems to have locked down, my graphics card has got no updates this month neither has much else.

Also be aware that out there there are some ratbags hacking health phacilities like hospitals and there is a program out there on android to track the virus spread which is actually fake and will instead lock your phone, charge 100 dollars for you to pay someone then wipe the phone and ask you to pay to get your stuff back so be carefull where you click.

Remember all, that while this virus is a problem, fear is also a major killer.

Remember the hitch hikers guide cover and don't panic.

I will post more on chat.

We didn't change the way it works from the earlier version, simply updated the code to work with Python 3.  The behaviour should be the same as it used to be.

triple talk and NVDA

Dan Thompson

Greetings to everyone,

I have been using my external triple talk with NVDA for a few years now.  But sometime in the last few updates, NVDA won’t work with the triple talk.  I checked under speech settings but the choice isn’t there anymore.  The drivers are still on the computer because the triple talk still works with JAWS.  Can someone give some suggestion how to get triple  talk back in as a choice?  Thanks in advance.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
