Eric, I had a Lenovo laptop once that made use of a combo audio jack along with the popup whenever something was connected to it but there was a box that could be checked to eliminate this in the future.

This can be turned off if you know the make and model of the video card.these days, I don't think it impacts your use of nvda. However, if you try to get cited Assistance or show something to a person using the screen, they may have comments for you, haha..

Some Dell models use the function keys for Hardware functions. Personally, I find this very irritating.they do not have a utility that allows you to change this Behavior inside of Windows. You will have to get cited assistance to go into the BIOS and turn it off yourself, so that the operating system can have access to the function keys directly for software functions.

Believe It or Not, plugging in headphones can also be a bit tweaky. Dell likes to use combo Jacks, and a software will come up and ask what you want to use the jack for every time to plug in earphones.

I would rather have a Lenovo or an Asus myself, but there seems to be a lot of cheap Off Lease Dell Hardware around.    I just bought a refurbished Dell core i7 2.7 gigahertz, 8 gig RAM, and 250 gig SSD, for $400.it wouldn't have been my first choice, but I'm willing to live with Mike works for a computer of that Speck at that price.

Re: New Computer

Hard to say. The biggest thing to check is if its a laptop does it have all the keys you need without training as a concert pianist, and does the sound system in it work with nvda without clipping of the start of words etc.
There is the vexed question of what the f keys do by default. That really depends if you can get sighted help to tweak the bios or not. I do not think one can just say a particular make is OK or not, it comes down to individual models and installed hardware and drivers most of the time.

If you don’t get an answer about STATA with NVDA, ask your instructor if you can use an alternative. Python and R are good ones.

Wordpress is a CMS or content management service. Blogs and websites are made using this as I don't think you want to write a million lines of html code. Facebook is just a social network but wordpress can use plugins to link posts from facebook and or twitter and can enable users to share to facebook and or twitter or tumbler or what not. Go to wordpress.org and read more about what it is and how it can be used.

Re: Dumb question about writing posts in Wordpress

John, truthfully, pressing tab just once for me tabs away from the
WordPress visual editor. You do need to press NVDA+space to exit
browse mode. As someone who has done WordPress for 8 years, as a site
owner myself, a hosting provider for primarily WordPress sites, & a
holder of a WordPress Support forum Contributor badge, I'm scarcely
"just guessing". Obviously I don't know what your setup is, ie, if
it's a virtual box where keystrokes may not work as expected, etc, but
tab does work. You may wish to try shift-tabbing back to the title box
& again, you'll find it necessary to press NVDA+space.

I really doubt these apps do anything unless you somehow activate them or
give them information or perhaps do something else. I don't have a smart
phone and I don't know much about apps, but I receive a technology
newsletter and I have for years. I haven't once seen this subject, that is,
just having the apps on a phone, discussed or even mentioned as a possible
security concern. I am therefore skeptical that they are a concern. Of
course, I'll consider other comments and I'm not assuming I am right but at
this point, I am very skeptical that these are problems.

Hello Sylvie and Ollie:

The method described by Sylvie will find more than comments if present in a document. For example, if track changes was used to record changes made to a document, the A key while in browse mode will also move to those as well as comments. Furthermore, when using the A key in browse mode, it will take you to the place in the document where the selected text associated with the comment is, but will not place you in the actual comment for editing, deleting or replying.

Word has built-in keystrokes for navigating comments in a document which will work with any screen reader. Alt+N will move to the next comment while Alt+V will move you to a previous comment. When using these commands, you are actually placed in the comment and can perform the keystrokes described by Silvie to respond to or delete a comment.

Hello again Ollie,
If you enable the browsing mode in word with Nvda+spacebar, you can jump to one comment/annotation by pressing a.
When you are on the comment you want to see, right click with the appropriate key or shift+f10 and use the down and up arrow keys. You will find a menu entry to modify, answer, delete or mark the comment as closed.
You can also display the list of comments in pressing nvda+F7, you can choose to display the list of annotations and browse through the different comments.
If you don't know the keystroke, when NVDA says "has a comment", you can have it read in pressing nvda+alt+C.
Enjoy!
