Re: pdf editing with adobe and nvda

MS-Edge is great for reading PDFs, but the original question (and title) is about editing them. It's useless for that particular task.

As has been noted, there are other options besides Adobe Acrobat for PDF editing, and for those who already know Word it's worth trying.  The only issue is whether or not every tiny bit of the formatting will be preserved, as Word will make slight changes for PDFs created using older formats for that file type.  But I have yet to see it do anything that makes it look a complete and utter mess.  And there's no problem if you've actually created the file in MS-Word and elected to save it as a PDF.  But I presume the original question is about making changes to an existing PDF file that came into one's possession.

Re: pdf editing with adobe and nvda

PDFs can be edited in MS-Word since version 2013, I believe.  I know I can open them in 2016.

I'd have to play around with it, as that's not something I've done
before. On the rare occasion I need to create a PDF, I am usually
working in Word, which can then save as a PDF. I've had very little to
do lately, so I'll try and play around with this and get back to you.

I'm not sure how you'd make a PDF editable in general. I've found that
PDFs that are developed properly act quite similar to webpages. If
they're fillable, then it's easy to do that with NVDA.

Hi

Out of curiosity what version of windows are you running? Back a few years ago on earlier verison of windows in the mail app and subject line etc you could hear the letters typed but when you went to review them it would not say the letters. I can not remember if what was typed up could be read by nvda and in a latter version of windows 10 that bug was fixed. I can not remember if the win escentuals app add on fixed it until it was fixed in a later version.

The only solution oriented thing I can suggest at this point, is that you run the COM registration fixing tool, on the NVDA Tools menu. On an English keyboard, you can press NVDA+n, t, r, enter, and follow the prompts.

Hello Evelyn,

You can hit windows key + a to see your notifications.  You must tab and arrow around to see the various notifications.

Subject: [nvda] question about reading notifications

I am resending because I issued the send command before I was ready.  I am running Windows 10 and the version of NVDA which is just before the latest one, and I am wondering if someone can tell me how to read my windows notifications.  Any help would be appreciated as I am an inexperienced user at this point.

Re: question about reading notifications

See:  Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows, specifically the section regarding Windows Logo Key (AKA the Windows Key) keyboard shortcuts.  (Or, if you prefer, List of all Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts: The ultimate guide).

Even before that, you will likely want your Notifications to remain visible longer than the default.  Go to Settings, Ease of Access, Display Pane and locate the dropdown for Show Notifications for and drop it down and pick a duration of your choosing.  I believe the default is 7 seconds, but I could be wrong about that.

When a notification appears WinKey+Shift+V throws focus to that notification while it's being displayed.  If it has disappeared, odds are it is in the queue in the Action Center, accessed using WinKey+A.  I believe WinKey+Shift+V will also cycle through all notifications, including those in the Action Center, moving to the next with each repeated press so long as you don't do anything else between each press except view the notification.

Right click on a blank area of your desktop (Or go to the desktop (Windows+d), press control+space to unselect the default icon, and press your applications key.)

Choose the "new" submenu, and "shortcut" from there.
Where it says: "type the location of the item", type the following:

taskkill.exe /f /im firefox.exe /t

Select "next".
Then, type a name for the shortcut. I use "Firefox killer", then select Finish.
Next, find the "Firefox killer" (or whatever you called it) icon on your desktop, and press your Applications key.
Choose "properties".
Tab to "shortcut key", and press control+alt+k, or whatever you want the shortcut to be.
Then tab to "OK" and press it.
And you should be done.

Note that these instructions work in Windows 10, 7, and probably Vista. I do not know if they do in XP.

Re: Is There a Memory Leak when NVDA Works with FireFox?

hi luke.
on the contrary, i observe this issue even in my intel cpu laptop and
dont have any information about amd because i did not use.
2. how can i have such shortcut that you mentioned? when i observe
locking firefox, my keyboard and whole my system become unresponsive
and unusable!
but i found a solution that may makes situation very better, at least,
it prevents overheating cpu and fast speed working fan!
if someone wish to know, please email me.
but luke, because you are programmer, i believe that you may know the
solution which i use.
without this, my laptop cpu temperature become 80 and even more!
i believe this problem is because of javascript in dynamic websites
which be updated very frequently.

A few things of note.

1. Yes, I've seen this, although not generally on the last five or so major

versions of Firefox.

2. I keep a shortcut on my desktop which calls taskkill on firefox.exe, and

has a keyboard shortcut (control+alt+k), for just such circumstances.

3. When this has happened on my laptops, I would start to notice the fan
speeding up to maximum, and then never slowing back down. The machine would

become nearly unusable. This would only happen on certain websites.
Getresponse.com was one, but I believe I also observed it, at least to a
partial
extent, on Facebook, though I don't use Facebook web enough to be sure.

4. This problem, under various descriptions, has been reported here before,

and may even have some Github issues about it, although I don't have time to

research whether that's true right now.

5. While I don't know if this is related, I can say that I experienced this

at its worst, on AMD processors. My Intel machine seemed a bit more
resilient
with it, or it never got as all-consuming as it was with the AMDs. But I
have no idea if that is indicative, or just a usage pattern difference.

I know of no solution to this other than to assassinate the fox when it
happens.
I also don't know if it is strictly an NVDA thing, or if other screen
readers
experience it as well.

Re: Issue with Microsoft teams

Vaibhav Saraf

Hi,

Normally Teams title will be set to the name of the person / group whose chat window you have opened last in the app, irrespective of whether you sent a message or not.

You might be speaking to someone or answering a ping from notification (I don't know if anyone is actually able to interact well with that notification), but the app title will be set to the group / person name whose chat you opened last in the app.

Thanks,
Vaibhav

Edited

Message updated, because the information requested really isn't optional if an assistant is to know what they must know to help.  Also, as Sarah said, there is some basic troubleshooting that should be done as well, and I've included a link to a previous message in the archive where I listed those.

In order to be of any assistance with an issue like this, any assistant must have:

1.  The email client you are using, along with its version number.  This must be supplied regardless of the specific type of software being asked about for that software.
2.  The version of Windows you're using (if Windows 10, include the build number, which you get via the winver command)
3.  The version of NVDA you are running (which should be updated to 2020.4 first, if you're not already using 2020.4)
4.  What, if any, troubleshooting steps you've already taken (Thanks, Sarah!) and if you've haven't taken any, you need to read, The Most Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Suspected NVDA Issues, and take those steps and have the information about what they revealed.
