Sorry for the mistake, I was so irritated with the announcements that I posted to the wrong list.

Thanks for the instructions, will follow them.

Anyway, go to Tools, Options, General, and navigate to the level 1 heading "incoming messages". Right below that are checkboxes that tell Thunderbird how you want to be notified when new mail arrives. One of them is "play a sound".

Re: Thunderbird anounces new messages

By default, the program plays the default Windows sound for incoming mail. If you want to see what setting is being used, you can checck in the following manner:
When you are in the main window of the program, issue the command alt t. Up arrow once to options and press enter.
Start tabbing. You will get to a check box that says play a sound. Check it with the space bar if it isn't checked.
Then tab until you get to a radio button that says something like play default sound. If it says something else like play another file, let us know.

There are one or two things to know to make working with the options interface much more accessible. I'll explain them if you wish.

When you have finished working in options, close it with control f4, not alt f4. Control f4 will return you to the main program window. Alt f4 will close the program and when you open it again, you will be in options again.

The reason you need to use control f4 is because options is a tab, not a separate window in this program.

No trick, really, just use the NVDA pass-through command  (NVDA+F2) that tells NVDA to ignore what comes next and pass it through to the application.

Re: some messages are very slow in Outlook

If this is enough of a problem, try reading messages as plain text and see what happens. Also, you could try using another e-mail program and see what happens. Firefox has a setting to use simple HTML. That setting allows messages to use HTML for such things as formatting, but doesn't allow anything to run or any HTML to do anything in a message except that which displays formatting and which allows you to follow links.

Bob,

I have seen this and suspect the problem is the HTML markup of the messages. Uber's messages would have some very cluttered HTML and perhaps javascript which could be slowing NVDA down.

I notice some messages are slow, such as messages from;
Amazon, audible, my bank, yes, messages from buisnesses.
Regular mail from individuals or email lists are fine.

Shortcuts in GMail

Arno Schuh

Hi,
at work we now use Google Work Space. That comes with GoogleMail. GoogleMail offers shortcuts after activation.
When I read the instructions how to use these shortcuts it was pretty clear, that some of the shortcuts will not work, because the shortcuts and hotkeys are already in use on my system.
But probably there is a trick how it works with NVDA?
If so, how did it work?
Did I need a profile to get it running? Or something else? Checking a checkbox in the options menue of NVDA?

Any help is appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Arno

Hi Ari

If you have sounds when you go to start nvda does it make a sound then go quite? If you use the windows key + letter D will it talk on the desk top. as at times when it goes to the task bar people think it is not working.

Using the arrow keys will speak out any thing there.

You might have speech mode turned off If this is the case use the nvda key + letter S to toogle it to speech mode talk.

You can also reset nvda back to factory defaults if it comes up or use the shortcut nvda key + ctrl key + the letter R 3 times unless you do it through the menu.

but make sure if you do this after you go through the menu to load it at startup etc this is the one you get whenn you do a fresh install of nvda with setting desktop etc.

make sure  you get this message. You might have to restart nvda for it to come up.

Hopefully that fixes the problem.

I am guessing the nvda.ini file might of got corrupted some how.

If this is the case I think you said you uninstalled nvda from the computer there is another place to delete the settings from.

Press the windows key + the letter R then type in the following %appdata% then press the enter key. It will give you a list of folders locate the nvda folder then delete it out then use the alt key + f4 key to close that screen .

That nice fresh copy of nvda install that to the pc and it should be right to go.

You might have to use another screen reader narrator will do the trick to do the above mentioned or a pair of eyes.

sudden, it stopped speaking. I booted up Narrator and exited NVDA then
tried to bring up NVDA again, with no luck. I then tried restarting
the computer, and still nothing changed. I left the computer alone for
a few days, but when I came back to it today, I still had the same

uninstalled and reinstalled NVDA, getting the latest version from
NVDA's website. The install screen spoke, but as soon as it was
installed, I suddenly had no speech. I have no idea what I can do at
this point. I have absolutely no ad-ons installed, the volume is up in
the synthesizer dialogue, and I switched to ESpeak, just in case.
Absolutely nothing has worked. I know my Surface isn't muted,
obviously, because I'm getting speech both from Narrator and from
JAWS.

Does anyone know what this issue could possibly be? I'm extremely
frustrated. I haven't used JAWS in quite a long time, and rather
dislike it. The caps lock key no longer works as the JAWS key for a
laptop, and I really miss the synth ring. Also, I feel like JAWS isn't
as good on the web as NVDA. I had to get my husband's help with
accepting the terms of service for a public WiFi network, because I
couldn't even use the stupid JAWS cursor because of the aforementioned
caps lock JAWS key issue. I would have had no such issue with this
webpage with NVDA. If I couldn't navigate to it with the standard
keys, I could most-likeley have gotten to it with Object Nav. Arrowing
through the page with JAWS just got me to some explanatory text, and
the stupid accept terms of service checkbox, but never to the button
to finish the process of connecting. Anyhow, I'm hoping someone has
some suggestions.

It's part of your subscription, but you still pay for that subscription, and
are therefore paying for the book. You have every right to complain to
Amazon and the publisher.

Use the speech recognition training program

Yeti

Hello List,

is there any way to effectively use the voice recognition
training program on Windows 10 with NVDA?
A setting or an add-on?
Or an accessible alternative to do the training.

My current problem is that I always have to spend annoying
time looking for the text that is to be spoken.
It cannot be focused and is not spoken automatically.

System: W10 64 and NVDA both in the last stable version.

Thank you very much for reading

Re: No speech when running NVDA.

Luke Davis

A couple things you can try, in addition to Jackie's suggestion:

First, in NVDA, press NVDA+control+r three times quickly, which will reset your configuration to factory defaults.
If something did get screwed up with your configuration, just removing NVDA might not fix that.

Second, with NVDA and Narrator running:

Open the Sound Volume Mixer (windows+r, sndvol, enter).

Make sure that NVDA doesn't have its volume down there, and that it's not muted.

Before you try this, make sure NVDA isn't set to no-speech--have it on Espeak, preferably. I know you checked that already, but something could be going on with your configurations.

It may be worth trying this idea before resetting your configuration, in case you don't need to reset.

Luke

NVDA does keep the c:\users\x\AppData\Roaming\NVDA folder after uninstalling. Delete that after you uninstall, then reinstall again.

I'll take a stab at this, since this sounds exactly like a problem I
had years ago, according to the email I just found it looks like I was
running NVDA 2011.2. The email I found suggested that my NVDA.ini file
got screwed up, but wouldn't that get removed when NVDA is
uninstalled? If I remember right, uninstalling and reinstalling worked
for me, but clearly that hasn't worked for you. I know some programs
however, such as Audacity, leave your configuration profile after you
uninstall them, but I'm not sure if NVDA does that or not. I can't
believe it's been 10+ years since I've been using NVDA, and I had
forgotten some of the questions I had asked over the years on the
previous support lists run by Freelists.

some messages are very slow in Outlook

Bob Cavanaugh <cavbob1993@...>

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out. I'm still going
through and trying to clean out 11 years worth of emails from Outlook,
and in recent days I've come across several messages that slow down
NVDA's response time with Outlook, as in when I press the command to
read it hesitates for something like 10 seconds. If anyone uses Uber
with an email account that you have connected to Outlook, schedule a
ride and then try reading the email that is sent with Outlook. I found
one of those that I had saved and it reacted very slowly as I
described. If it makes any difference, I have "use UI automation"
turned on to prevent Outlook from crashing when certain HTML emails
are opened.

Re: No speech when running NVDA.

Hello, Arianna. That really is frustrating. I guess my first question
is whether your output sound card is correct.

Pleas press control + NVDA key + s to reach the synthesizer menu. Tab
once to the audio output device & ensure that it's set to your
speakers/headphones of choice. Tab to ok & activate the button, &
let's see if that helps.
