epub3 is a special type of file, where you have audio and text that can be synched, for instance, for dyslexic readers. I guess that's the reason why one would want to convert epub's to epub3's. Ciao, Ollie

There are scads of bells and whistles that have been added over the years that I, or any given person, just don't use and we don't care one whit whether they're available to us or not. The above being said, it makes no sense to keep shoe-horning OS operating environments into looking like something that was an ancestor. Eventually that breaks, but more importantly it quite literally hobbles one's ability to use the OS as the OS is. Unless you are someone who will never, ever touch another computer, anywhere, that runs the same OS as yours does you will be left wandering in the proverbial forest when you actually have to deal with the user interface as designed and shipped. There is no good reason to do that, period. Nothing is so constant as change, and as far as Windows 10 goes it's far more like Windows 7 and earlier in the overall UI than Windows 8 or 8.1 were. I have not yet had a blind or visually impaired client go through an extended "tearing my hair out" period when they transitioned to Windows 10. You can do most tweaks within the UI provided to make it feel very familiar without actually putting the mask that is an interface changer on top of it. The fact of the matter is, blind or not, when it comes to technology you either go with the flow or you eventually get drowned. When we have a terrorist attack, on September 11, 2001 with 19 men — 15 of them are Saudis — and five minutes later the whole country thinks they’re from Iraq — how can you have faith in the public? I just tried the add-on. I see no voice
variatns, and it sounds nothing like Eloquence. Also, the way many plosive
consonants are spoken as a really annoying tinny sound. I find this
extremely annoying to listen to, such consonants as k or t are almost like
clicks. While the actual voices themselves have been improved in terms of
sound, the accent and the plosive consonant problem causes the overall quality
orf speech to be very poor.

Subject: [nvda] a new modified nv-speech player Hi,
A few years back nv-access made an improved ESpeak that was called nv-speech player. Since then a few people have greatly improved it! I just tried it a few minutes ago and it sounds great! It sounds almost exactly like eloquence, sort of, or maybe keynote gold, kind of. There is other stuff on this site which I will not discuss for legal reasons. And please just ignore that other *stuff*. Just focus on the free nv speech player! First, the website with the modded and improved speech player stuff. Direct link.

Now here is my favorite version of the speech player addon modified by Jason bratcher. Perhaps, with this new speech player, someone can modify its intonations and make a keynote gold speech player voice? And give it more languages?

I'm not familiar with Calibre on Windows, but on Mac OS/X and Linux, it can be used as a command-line tool, so these conversions could easily be scripted. Antony.

I've seen claims before about how improved versions
of E-Speak sound like or almost like Eloquence. I've never found it to be
the case and I'm very skeptical now. Your hedging makes me more
suspicious. Almost like Eloquence, sort of, is a very hedged
statement.

Re: Automatically converting EPUB to EPUB3
Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>
I've never heard of epub3. If the files are already epub, why do you need to convert them to anything else? Epub files are perfectly accessible all by themselves. But, to answer your question, as far as I know, it is relatively
easy to get calibre to convert to any format you like by default.
Just set the epub3 to your default format, then any file you copy
into it's startup folder will automaticlaly be converted into
epub3. It's been quite a while since I've played around with
calibre, so I don't know the exact steps for setting formats and
automatic conversions and such, but it is possible, and folks do
this sort of thing all the time. On 11/2/2018 3:49 AM, Sociohack AC

Re: NVDA and ribbon menues

I'm not saying you shouldn't discuss these things,
but you make it sound as though a lot of people will have serious
problems. That is what I disagree with. and I said, when
properly taught. There is a lot of inferior teaching about ribbons.
And I suspect the reason the Microsoft representative said to embrace ribbons is
for the reason I said, that you lose functionality or features when you try to
force ribbons to be menus. But others will have to comment on
that.
As far as the JAWS attempt to force ribbons to be
menus, see this article. It discusses the inconveniences and problems
encountered when you use the JAWS system.

Re: Virtual dub 2.
Yeah. I tried it this morning to do a bit of video editing, tried it from a few MKV files I ripped from DVD's and it seems to be just as accessible as the old. I can't find the git hub page though. It is open source, but from my experience, blind developers tend to do their own version of whatever. Still, I like the program because I can't find an accessible, modern, video editor anywhere and this is the best we have, for now.

You have a problem, as you said . Most
people learn ribbons without a lot of trouble. It may take them a little
time but if taught properly, they don't find them a major problem. You are
discouraging people from learning ribbons.
I am skeptical and suspicious of ribbon removing
programs. I suspect you lose functionality when you try to force one
interface to become another interface. I hope people comment on

Agreed. I also hate the ribbon, but I had to learn it in my computer class in 2008. My teacher also didn't know what he was doing as he got that version of word the day before so we were both learning together. So learn it or get left behind is what I say. I'm getting gleft behind. Lol!
