Sometimes it helps to use object navigation to ensure that it's
recognizing the correct graphics.

Alternatively, if anybody has an example of a place where OCR should
absolutely work, I'd be happy to test it. It's really weird that it
doesn't seem to recognize anything. It worked briefly when I posted
about this a while back in an earlier version when I restarted without
addons, and then it worked with addons, but then it just sort of stopped
giving me useful results, and this has continued into 2019.3.1, Windows
1909. Everything I recognize just reads "blank", there's pretty much
nothing there. I don't use OCR a lot, but I did actually use it to
update firmware from Komplete Kontrol once, and since that's the
dialogue that's come up, it would be nice to have it working again.

Re: NVDA Crashing while reading Word document

WinKey+E under Windows 10 opens File Explorer, which was renamed as of Windows 8 if memory serves.  It is precisely synonymous with what had been called Windows Explorer in earlier versions of Windows.

By default it will open File Explorer with focus on the Quick Access section of File Explorer if it's active (and it is by default) which acts much like the Recent Files lists in various programs.  It can be turned off.  I believe you can also force File Explorer to open by default to whatever folder, library (e.g. Documents, Pictures), or Windows defined location (e.g. This PC) you so choose.

Re: Problem with NVDA and Chrome on HTML pages with many links

molly the blind tech lover

Hi.
There is an issue with Chrome where webpages are not refreshing. I don't
know if this the same issue you are describing, but the issue has been
resolved in the beta version of Chrome. There should be a Chrome update on
March 17 in which this issue has been resolved.

Subject: [nvda] Problem with NVDA and Chrome on HTML pages with many links

hello. In using Google Chrome with a squirrelmail web page with
many links, I find either NVDA or Chrome is mis-behaving. Specifically, I
see a lot of errors in the NVDA log similar to the ones below. When these
errors happen, The specific web page in question becomes unresponsive and
other odd things break, i.e. this evening, I couldn't copy to the clipboard
for some odd reason, until I reboot. Is this a known issue, and, if it is,
does anyone know where I can get the fix? I believe I'm running the latest
version of Chrome, Windows 10 and NVDA.
See snippets of the log file below.

Many thanks for any light folks can shed on this issue.

The two are precisely synonymous.  With the widespread use of networked drives, the cloud, and similar - not to mention that many PCs have multiple user accounts -  "This PC," actually makes more sense  All personal libraries have now dropped "My" from their names, so what was My Documents is now Documents, My Pictures is Pictures, etc., etc., etc.

Character not spoken when reading by character

Daniel Gartmann

Hi,

Using NVDA 2019.3.1, and the CodeFactory Vocalizer add-on:

I am trying to investigate an issue where the é character is not being read with the CodeFactory Danish voices when I go character by character using the standard, arrow keys.

With eSpeak NG, the character is spoken.

Any idea how I can investigate this issue further or even try to correct it?

Thanks and best regards

Daniel

Problem with NVDA and Chrome on HTML pages with many links

Brian Buhrow

hello. In using Google Chrome with a squirrelmail web page with many
links, I find either NVDA or Chrome is mis-behaving. Specifically, I see a
lot of errors in the NVDA log similar to the ones below. When these errors
happen, The specific web page in question becomes unresponsive and other
odd things break, i.e. this evening, I couldn't copy to the clipboard for
some odd reason, until I reboot. Is this a known issue, and, if it is,
does anyone know where I can get the fix? I believe I'm running the latest
version of Chrome, Windows 10 and NVDA.
See snippets of the log file below.

Many thanks for any light folks can shed on this issue.

-thanks

Re: Password Managers

I would suggest both Searching the NVDA Group Archive and Searching the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Archive on the phrase "password manager" or "password managers" along with "free" if that's critically important, as this topic has been discussed many, many times on both groups.

Re: NVDA Installation failed

Sandra Pilz

Hi Felix,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately setting the NVDA language to English didn't help. The failed installation not only faild to create the desktop shortcut, but also didn't create NVDA entries in the start menu. I installed NVDA 2019.1 first and then updated to 2019.3.1, that did the trick.

Best

Hello Sandra,

2. Sometimes, switching the NVDA language to English before installing
fixes this problem. If you feel comfortable doing this, it may be the
cleaner option.
Hope this helps,

Works like a charm, thank you very much indeed!

Not sure what this option does in the settings but it certainly resolves the problem.

Hi,

When using my Hauppauge t.v. tuner with NVDA running, the NVDA seems to interrupt the key presses on the remote control.

Seems like it needs some sort of pass through mode turning on, does anyone have any idea on how I can work around this please?

Re: NVDA Crashing while reading Word document

thanks gene for remembering and helping me. God bless you!
me too.
i did not use this command, except for a very rare occasions.
but one person told me that one of the advantages of windows seven
over xp is openning my computer with windows e command, its great in
list view.
and i tested on my laptop that opens my computer in a treeview and i
should use tab once for going to the list view.
and, also, i tested with windows seven which activated computer in
list view at the first time without using tab.

On 3/4/20, Gene <gsasner@...> wrote:
I think that's true. I almost never use that command. I should have

generally what you use and I know how it works in that version of Windows.
I use that command so little that I wasn't sure if there was a difference.

for me, when i press windows e nvda says my computer but in treeview.
i should press tab key one time to return to the list view.
when i tested with windows seven,
windows e opened computer in list view at the first time without using
extra key for me!
i dont know about other versions of windows and there behaviour.

Windows e opens Windows Explorer which is somewhat like the file list in

another
window of the same utility so you now have two Windows Explorer windows
opened. Close the windows with alt f4. Press it until the windows are
closed. I would think two times would be sufficient. You can tab to the
list view from the tree view but I see no reason to use Windows e unless
you
want the tree view. If you use My Computer, you can see everything in
that
way.

nvda-old.log. So, if NVDA has crashed and you've restarted it, the log
from that previous time when it crashed should be nvda-old.log.
Additionally, if NVDA has crashed, there should be a file called
nvda_crash.dmp which has a lot of extra information we can use to work
out
exactly what happened. If you send us all of those files we can have a
look. If you have a copy of the offending word document you are able to
send us, that could be helpful too.

As usual, if you can recreate the issue with NVDA's log level set to
"debug" and add-ons disabled, that really helps too.

Subject: [nvda] ccleaner new version

Hi all.

Well there is a new version out of ccleaner.

CCleaner hasn't had a new version in ages, however, the following
things
have been done.

1. all those nice tweaks in the ccleaner.ini no longer function so you
can't manually turn off healthcheck or updater or whatever it is
called.

At first there is an announcement when you start.

Don't for any reason interact with it because you will then not be able
to
close ccleaner, just hit alt f4 and it will just do whatever.

2. sadly the old options/ lets turn off healthcheck and only use
custom
cleaning button seems to be skipped over by nvda so I don't know, I may
try
with another reader and then see if that puts something in the ini
file.

3. healthcheck just like the previous quick clean is a great program,
its
just completely unusable by us.

They thankfully left custom clean alone, however this is probably it,
if
they in any way screw up custom clean, then I am going to have to
completely abandon ccleaner because I just can't interact with it
anymore.

I am seriously thinking about sending a recording to ccleaner support
and
all that because we can't even navigate these announcements or
healthcheck
itself, maybe have them set it so its not going to be active anymore or
something.

If only we could choose the option that would be a different thing but
we
can't.

As of now, this ini file is still usefull for its intended purpose of
custom cleaning adjustment so you don't have to interact with the
inaccessible front panel but thats all.

For now if wanting to do something click either tools for custom clean
before you do anything, do not hit anything else other than that.

I think that's true.  I almost never use that command.  I should have specified that I am describing Windows XP since that is, as far as I know, generally what you use and I know how it works in that version of Windows.  I use that command so little that I wasn't sure if there was a difference.

for me, when i press windows e nvda says my computer but in treeview.
i should press tab key one time to return to the list view.

windows e opened computer in list view at the first time without using
extra key for me!
i dont know about other versions of windows and there behaviour.

Re: NVDA Crashing while reading Word document

hi Quentin

I also will try to send you a crash log from my NVDA on one of my machines.

I have one which is a linovo desktop with windows 10 pro latest updates and office 2010 and latest NVDA I don't get NVDA crash on this machine but then I never run screen curtain on it.

the one that crashes is a linovo laptop with the same specifications of OS and office and NVDA.

I found the first time the laptop crashed was while I was using screen curtin and ms word 2010 on  a simple document with no tables or any formatting other than default body level text.

I was at a seminar and needed to restart the screen reader to continue taking notes.

that first time after multiple restarts of NVDA word  itself crashed.

Wen I use notepad or JART on the laptop NVDA does not crash but I have not tried using the screen curtain at the seminar since because I want to be able to take notes without having to restart the computer. I like to be private taking notes at seminars.

note: I did try the com  registration tool and then removed NVDA completely including the user settings and reinstalling but the problem remains.

I did not get this issue with NVDA 2019.02.1 (I think that was the version of the last NVDA when I ran the screen curtain addon which I did for privacy at the seminars.

kind regards

Ian

I will prepare a proper document ready for the next time with the model of the laptop and proper version numbers for the software.

kind regards

Ian

NVDA keeps its log in the %temp% folder (you can usually get to that either by pressing WINDOWS+R, typing %temp% and pressing ENTER, or from Windows Explorer (WINDOWS+E) press F2 to get to the address bar, type %temp% and press ENTER).

The log for the currently running NVDA (or most recently run copy if NVDA isn't currently running) is nvda.log.  The log from the time before that is nvda-old.log.  So, if NVDA has crashed and you've restarted it, the log from that previous time when it crashed should be nvda-old.log.  Additionally, if NVDA has crashed, there should be a file called nvda_crash.dmp which has a lot of extra information we can use to work out exactly what happened.  If you send us all of those files we can have a look.  If you have a copy of the offending word document you are able to send us, that could be helpful too.
