Re: Automatic Column and Row Header Reading

Sam,

Have you tried setting a heading row (for the columns beneath it) and/or a heading column (for the row to the right of it) in Excel itself?  I have found that this tends to work, and across screen readers, better than doing said definition via the screen reader itself.

This can be done whether or not one is using an actual table in a spreadsheet or not.

Thanks Cearbhall,

I have constructed a test workbook without any blank lines. Still I cannot get NVDA to read the coordinates as it should. I have tested with NVDA 2019 and 2017 with the same result, so I am beginning to wonder whether there is some type of setting in Excel itself which is causing this to happen.

Thanks

Sam

Sam,

Have you any blank columns separating blocks of columns. If so, you would need to set the column headings on the first cell in the heading row of each block to make NVDA call out the column headings for that block.

All the best,

Hi all,

11.2.1 of the NVDA user guide mentions that NVDA is able to automatically announce appropriate row and column headers when navigating around Excel worksheets.

I used to be able to achieve this but it doesn't appear to work for me any more, and indeed as of NVDA 2019.3.

The cell coordinates just appear to read as usual, rather than reading any additional cell references.

I have enabled the Report Table row / column headers option in NVDA's Document Formatting settings.

y duCan anybodyplicate or suggest anything? This is highly likely to be user error.

Object review is the default. You should still be on it. I doubt being in object review will help your problem, but if you are in it and use read current line, the location will be read correctly.

If you are using the desktop layout, issue the command NVDA key numpad 1. If you hear no previous review mode, you are in object navigation. If you don't know, numpad 1 is the farthest key to the left on the numpad on the row above the numpad NVDA key.

Did you try reading current line after moving? You may get a solution to
the problem but if it works, you can move as you wish whether the problem is
solved or not.

Also,, and I doubt this will help but you never know, make sure you are in
object review, not screen review. You should be in object review whether
you use read current line or move without using it.

There isn't any change concerning first letter navigation on the desktop or

Speech other than that is working fine. But it would be nice to move by the

Hi,
I suspect NVDA is not being notified about selection changes, sometimes
caused by an add-on or a setting interfering with what NVDA is supposed to
do. To test, try restarting with all add-ons disabled, and if that solves
the issue, we can move onto isolating individual add-ons.

The original message doesn't say there is no speech. It gives one specific
condition where there is no speech, when you use first letter navigation in
a list. Since there is speech, the possible solutions don't apply.

I have no reason why no speech occurs at that one specific time. Using read
current line should easily solve the problem and the command takes almost no
time to execute. It may be possible to find the reason by examining the log
but there are some problems that are so minor and so easily worked around
that they aren't worth solving, though you may, if you wish to, pursue it,
of course.

Hi

I am sure you would of checked the following on the computer.

One that his speakers are plugged into the right whole and turned on.

On the computer the sound is not muted.

Press the windows key + letter R to bring up the run dialogue then type in
sndvol then press the enter key.

The next screen that comes up will have the master volume make sure it is
right up so you can hear it and not down on zero.

There is a box under it if checked it will mute the sound so make sure it is

un checked.

If you can see nvda is running but not talking under that section I think
there is a slider to make it louder there.

Also check when nvda is running that under the synth settings in nvda you
press the nvda key + ctrl key + the letter S to bring it up.

Make sure under the synth section that it has a synth there and not set to
no speech if it is set to that change it to e speak or another synth
package.

Hi,

Do the following as exactly as I tell you:

  1. Press NVDA key and Q to open Exit NVDA dialog.
  2. From Exit NVDA dialog, select “restart with debug logging enabled” and press Enter.
  3. Use NVDA as you would, including from files and folders list.
  4. After the problem is reproduced, press NVDA key and F1, copy everything, and paste it as a private email to me (private email is required to protect privacy and to comply with debug log data policy on this forum). After I get the log and do some work, I’ll come back here and let folks know what might be happening.

Out of curiosity do you have your computer connected to a tv via a hdmi cable? or is it computer to monitor or a lap top.

I have a pc connected to a tv via hdmi from the pc and it done weird stuff like you said.

It would do some thing weird like that and might only say the first letter not the word on the pc some stuff it would speak correctly and others not.

I think for it to work correctly I have to update the drivers for the hdmi audio or what ever it is called.

It seemed laggy to at present I have not updated it so do not know if it would fix it.

But I went back and done it from the speaker out on the pc to speakers and it worked properly.

I thought it might of been a sound driver problem which I think it was wither either the tv causing it which I would most probably have to update on the pc.

if it is not connected to a tv like I mentioned then you could cross this one off 2.

Make sure under the synth section that it has a synth there and not set to
no speech if it is set to that change it to e speak or another synth
package.

Hi,
Typo: off. Also, I don't think changing review modes would help, as this is
tied to focus movement and item selection.

There isn't any change concerning first letter navigation on the desktop or

Speech other than that is working fine. But it would be nice to move by the
first letter navigation. So if anyone has any ideas how to get it back I

fine. Thanks for responding to my questions.

Hi,
I suspect NVDA is not being notified about selection changes, sometimes
caused by an add-on or a setting interfering with what NVDA is supposed to

It may be possible to find the reason by examining the log
but there are some problems that are so minor and so easily worked around
that they aren't worth solving, though you may, if you wish to, pursue it,
of course.

Did you try reading current line after moving? You may get a solution to
the problem but if it works, you can move as you wish whether the problem is
solved or not.

Also,, and I doubt this will help but you never know, make sure you are in
object review, not screen review. You should be in object review whether
you use read current line or move without using it.

of a program or file when pressing it's first letter. However, the cursor
does go to the location. I know this by arrowing up and then down. I tried

maximizing but didn't cause any change in behavior. Any ideas to resolve
the problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi

There are 2 packages in this zip file.

one is the speech platform synth and voices there are quite a few languages there.

You need to install the run time file first then the synths.

the other one is RH voices and synths .

I will leave it in the drop box for 24 hours or so and you can
download it from
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9kh3aip9atldlho/synth%20packages.zip?dl=1

The speech hub package page can be found at
http://www.speakon.org.uk/SpeechHub/public/docs/NVDAClient/index.html

there you can find out more info about it and its synths/voices.

you will need also to download the latest add on for 2020.1 or it
might be the version before.

The synth package will need to be installed first then you must
install the add on for nvda to see those synths/voices.

the link to the page where you can read more about it can be found at
http://www.speakon.org.uk/SpeechHub/public/docs/NVDAClient/index.html

The other one I just copied off my how to add additional components
page but the voices are at the bottom of this page can be found at
http://www.cross-plus-a.com/balabolka.htm

This was the page it came off which points to other free and paid
synth/voice packages at
http://www.accessibilitycentral.net/how%20to%20install%20additional%20
nvda%20components.html

hope it helps.
