Strange behaviour in file list of Windows explorer

Christian Ohrens

Hi all,

OK, now as I changed to the newest NVDA version, there are also the first small issues.

When I’m browsing a filelist (for example with mp3 files) and press entert o open a file, it often happens, that the file won’t be opened. I have to go back to the previous file than step forward tot he file which I wanna open. It must have something to do with the usage of NVDA because with a demo version of JAWS or the Narrator there aren’t those issues. Does anybody know what’s going on?

Regards and thanks

Christian

If you press NVDA+n, t, a, enter, you will be in the add-on manager.
You can then use your arrow keys until "Add-on Updater" is spoken.
If you then hit tab twice, what do you hear?

Luke

Re: Question about add-on help

What version of NVDA are you running? (NVDA+n, h, a)

I see a help button while highlighting Add-on Updater, and it works.

I'm running the latest alpha.

Re: Toggling between keyboards (long description)

Edited

Hi all,

Let me reply in Korean first and provide translations below:

English translation:

I'm Joseph Lee, the former leader of NVDA Korean translations team.

I think you might be talking about Language Bar. If so, you can just press right Alt key to switch between English and Korean. As you know, you can enter Hanja characters by pressing the right Control key, which opens candidates window.

For reference, Windows+Space and Alt+Shift is used to switch between keyboard layouts (input method, to be exact). In case your keyboard doesn't have the dedicated English/Korean key, you can use right Alt key.

By the way, if you want to search for more info on input methods on the group archive, look for CJK, IME, or keyboard language.

Cheers, Joseph

It will, but I find holding space and talking is a lot quicker at times. Especially if I need to say something quick. I was taught that during a class.

During a ZOOM session I would like to hear the status of mute/unmute.  When I press down the spacebar, NVDA starts to announce “unmute” but does not complete speaking the word “unmute”.  When I let up the spacebar NVDA announces “mute”.

It is often impractical to hold down the spacebar to speak.  If I manage to click on the mute/unmute icon, NVDA does not announce anything.  I know there is a red slash though the icon but that is too hard to see.

Similarly, if I use ALT-A to change the state of mute/unmute, NVDA does not announce this.

I feel I am missing something here and therefore seek your advice.  Is there a way to make this work better?

It would also be really handy to have a way to announce the state of mute/unmute without actually changing the state by the controls mentioned above.  Something like a hotkey that causes the state of mute/unmute to be spoken would be great.  Sometimes during a session I just want to know if I am  muted or unmuted because I may have forgotten the status.

Thanks.  This is a great forum!!

Use the short cut command alt a to switch between mute and unmute. I don't know why you don't hear the status spoken fully when you do what you do. When I use alt a with NVDA, I hear the status spoken correctly.

Toggling between keyboards (long description)

Jiho Kim

Hello!

I read the automated “welcome message” in its entirety :) and I have a question: It may not be 100% related to the NVDA – not sure where to post this question. It may belong to the “chat” section but I need help regardless. I also checked the archive but no success.

First of all: English is not my first language – I may have some spelling errors or nonsensical sentences.

Secondly: we use Windows 10 (I think it’s relevant) and very new to NVDA or screen readers in general (other than voiceover for iphones?). well, I am still not sure if this is the right place to look for help.

In short: the issue is about being able to write in Korean letters.

I know how to toggle between pre-installed keyboards in windows (left Alt + left Shift by default) but If you change the keyboard layout with Alt+Shift to Korean, one more small button appears on the right side of the taskbar. Usually, you can toggle between Korean letters and English (or whatever romanised language) letters by left-clicking the button in the taskbar with mouse or some Korean keyboards has an extra (physical) key between spacebar and right Alt key. In my case, I don’t have the extra physical key, that’s assigned to this toggle button and cannot use the mouse.

I googled for very long time but could not find anything. I was hoping to find some solution here.

If needed, I can provide some screenshots(?)

FYI: we have no issues reading Korean (you can simply change the setting in NVDA) or changing the language settings in general. It seems, that’s one of the common issues from the archive.

Many thanks!

Jiho Kim

Re: Getting rid of the word linefeed

You can probably use the speech dictionary.  You may have to experiment on how to write what you want not spoken.  Then, there is what may be a much easier work around, just turn off speech before you start to move in that way.

Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion, however, Studio Recorder isn't a web
interface, so it is always in focus mode.
It covers the sound when I'm trying to get down into very small sounds
and cut them  out.
Thanks,
Chris
