Then start reading.  Google publishes extensive accessibility documentation for virtually every product it makes, and Hangouts is among those.  There's nothing like going to the source, and a simple web search takes you straight to it.

NVDA and Creating Anchor Text?

David Russell

Hello Members,

I write general articles for a major freelance service, and
sporadically, an order may appear in the work pool asking for
something that includes "anchor text." I did not choose to take the
order, because my Google research revealed that best practices shows
anchor text in blue. I do not know if the program used by the
freelance service has an option to select colored text.
In the future, is there an HTML guide that will instruct one on how to
create anchor text that automatically fills in whatever is necessary?

Thanks in advance. I do receive the digest version of group emails.

Re: NVDA becoming unresponsive in Microsoft Teams

This problem is not just an NVDA issue but is more of a problem with Teams and it's one which Microsoft is aware of, although I'm somewhat mystified that it's taken this long for a fix to be deployed to production.

One way to get Teams to cooperate when accessibility seems to break down is to resize the window. In other words, press Windows-down arrow to minimize it and then restore or maximize it again. This should get Teams to resume communicating with your screen reader.

In Windows 10, when you press the Windows key it opens the start menu, but the focus will likely go to the search (Cortana) edit.  You can either arrow or tab and move past the edit, or type what you want to find.  EG if you type Word, it will find Microsoft Word (if installed), WordPad and anything else with Word in the name.  It will also find documents and settings.

I just tried this and it seems to work fine for me.  I was reading the Microsoft Word with NVDA material which has headings with styles with numbering.  I'm using Office 365 (64-bit) Version: 16.0.12730.20256  and NVDA 2020.1

If you restart NVDA with add-ons disabled does it still do it?  If you've got a document you can reliably repeat with, would it be possible to confidentially send me a copy of it offlist please?

Kind regards,

Quentin.

To clarify, the numbers are added automatically by the selected MS Word styles.  I thought it was enunciation of indentations, but the same occurred when just having attributes such as "bold" or "italics" enunciated.
If indents, attributes, and styles are turned off, NVDA reads the paragraph numbers just fine.
I have not been able to isolate the behavior for certain, but I believe each of the above-three settings will nullify number reading.
Suggestions are welcome.

Re: Remotely controlling a computer with zoom while using NVDA

Luke Robinett

I know in other remote desktop situations, the remote machine needs to be running the screen reader in order for it to work, and the person needs to make sure they're sharing with audio. Might be interesting to have your friend load Windows Narrator then share their screen with you with PC audio enabled. I wonder if it would respond to your keyboard gestures.

I know there is a share video and a share audio and I believe it may allow someone to see and perhaps do things with a remote computer, I'm not sure.
But my impression is that this is purely visual. Once when a sighted friend and I were expeerimenting with share audio, he told me he could see my Winamp interface. He didn't try to do anything with it and when he shared something, though I didn't specifically try, I doubt I could see his interface in a way accessible to a screen-reader.

Hello all,
Hope all are doing well!

I have some question regarding zoom and NVDA: I am interested to remotely
control a computer with zoom, but I have a problem doing so because to do
this, I need to click with the mouse in the shared screen area of the person
I want to control his / her machine. So I am wondering if there is a way to
do this with NVDA accessibly? Has anyone done this successfully?

Any tip will be appreciated!
thank you!

Re: trouble with clickable elements

Steve Green

The competition has closed so I can’t see that particular code now, but from an accessibility perspective the coding is pretty horrid throughout the website.

For example, pages are entirely empty if JavaScript is turned off or fails to load for any reason. Although almost everyone has JavaScript enabled, this is still disgusting from a software engineering perspective. Have these people not heard of progressive enhancement? Or even graceful degradation? There are massive swathes of JavaScript on a website that needs virtually none at all. Heaven knows what it’s all doing.

They haven’t even applied any semantic structure, and they have done stupid things like adding HTML attributes to change links into buttons. They should throw it away and start again.

To be able to know what is on their screen, to be able to interact, you must tell the remote addon you wish to control the machine. To start and stop controlling, use the F11 key.

Hope this helps.

Accessibility of PCDI Canada/Ashworth College courses

Janet Brandly

Hello all,

Has anyone had experience with the accessibility of courses from the Professional Development Institute- Canada? This is an on-line college which is affiliated with Ashworth College in the US. I took a medical transcription course a number of years ago and am considering their 4-month MT course as a refresher. I spoke with one of their advisors yesterday. The outcome was not satisfactory. She did not know whether their program is recognized here in Canada and whether I can use their receipts or income taxes. The information is on their website an they are recognized. She also claims that the medical transcription program is not accessible for screen readers. Unfortunately, she was not able to provide me with the name of the learning platform they use o I cannot try it for myself. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Janet
