I believe I get this as well. I get "please eter the password for " etc etc etc. And an edit field I can't type into. I hit windows d and it goes away. Odd?

Ron, this happens to me as well. It's usually always Team viewer, but I've seen other phantom windows come up as well. I never mentioned it though because I am able to get out of it by hitting Windows+d or Windows+m for the desktop. Come to think of it, though, I don't remember this happening when I used system Access, but it could have. not saying it didn't, I just don't remember. I'm glad the windows do go away, though.

If I understand you right, you'd like me to produce a version of Add-on Updater compatible with older stable releases with a constraint that it won't check for updated version of itself unless NVDA itself is updated. In theory this is possible, but in practice, it defeats the purpose of Add-on Updater. First, I don't have any Windows XP machine at all to test this idea. Second, you need a base version for Add-on Updater, which must be updated from time to time so users will be notified that a newer NVDA version must be used (which means Add-on Updater needs to update itself, too, which is direct contradiction to what you are asking, I think).
Given NV Access's policy on Windows XP, coupled with impending switch to Python 3 and other changes here and there (and also because Add-on Updater relies on newer techniques), I'd like to kindly turn down this request. Also, within 30 days after release of NVDA 2019.1, I'll drop support for 2018.4 to make the add-on code simpler and to align with the direction NVDA is going with new add-on compatibility approach.

For versions of nvda before the last stable ones, maybe you could engineer an add on updater which will not update itself until nvda itself updates but does allow checking of other addons for updates. That way all of this missing add on update in the tools menu is avoided.
I imagine the people still on the old nvda are folks who are waiting for admins to do the update or something like that.
Also some seem to prefer the earlier version.

This is the reason why I told everyone yesterday that users should install
Add-on Updater 19.02.1A manually.
Speaking of Add-on Updater: it looks like I need to push another mandatory

Yes can be a good idea. We could not do that as the software had hard coded drivers for specific printers in a database but generally if those considerations are not the issue an old Inspiron can work very well.

I probably wouldn’t try and rescue the computer I would take the hard drive out of it and connect it to a working computer and extract the documents
A good few years ago I did do voluntary work fixing old computers sometimes it’s been three days getting it working and then it will just crash
I no longer do this sort of volunteering
I wonder if you could approach a recycling computer place and find a more recent machine for the person
I have used recycled computers for a while now

After 20 minutes trying, and failing, to extract some more useful information, I finally resolved to trying to locate a recovery disc image, an image that had a lot of tools to possibly repair the system or transfer files from the hard drive to an external place. I could not find any for the blind. Could someone direct me to similar recovery disc images that have speech output or similar? Thanks in advance. He does not have his initial XP recovery disc.

No on Dels of a certain age, its normally the plug in dvd/cd or floppy that the system detects as faulty.

Right if its a dell, and has a removable cd or floppy drive. Take it out then try a reboot. Some of these machines will not boot if a fault in a drive is detected, even if its not actually being used for booting.
I've had this several times so its not a unique experience. So yes hardware most of the time.

The letters are always in uppercase in brf files. It's the standard.
