Re: Dropbox nag screens now appearing

Really they should be adopting good practice though. However at the moment the other issue I have is as I've said here before, on my windows 7 box the dialogues and log in screen are just blank as far as nvda are concerned. I suspect that a file or registry corruption has occurred but there are no real clues and so I cannot really report that issue as others here say they work for them. here we get a blank pane and an exception in the log of nvda. Cfc says no issues either but it uses QT extensively and so I suspect that a dll is either out of date or not registered and I'm not inclined to reinstall windows to fix one problem with one piece of software when at some point it will need to be upgraded to windows 10 in any case.
I know the nag screen is inaccessible as others have said so so I feel on more solid ground there.

Yes they do fix problems in the desktop application but the web site builders seem a tougher nut to crack.

Hi,
unfortunately they have never been interested in accessibility. I once
had problems with the website and contacted their support staff, who
flatly proclaimed that accessibility was an unsupported feature. They
seemed incapable of grasping that accessibility is not, strictly
speaking, a feature but rather lack of it constitutes a bug, just as
lack of security or reliability does. Just imagine asking your bank
about the security of their home banking, and their response being
that this feature is currently not supported.
Best,
Felix

I probably wouldn’t try and rescue the computer I would take the hard drive out of it and connect it to a working computer and extract the documents
A good few years ago I did do voluntary work fixing old computers sometimes it’s been three days getting it working and then it will just crash
I no longer do this sort of volunteering
I wonder if you could approach a recycling computer place and find a more recent machine for the person
I have used recycled computers for a while now

A friend has an old DELL XP that, as he puts it, finally crashed. When I pressed for more detail, all he could tell me was that windows wasn't loading and JAWS wasn't coming on. After 20 minutes trying, and failing, to extract some more useful information, I finally resolved to trying to locate a recovery disc image, an image that had a lot of tools to possibly repair the system or transfer files from the hard drive to an external place. I could not find any for the blind. Could someone direct me to similar recovery disc images that have speech output or similar? Thanks in advance. He does not have his initial XP recovery disc.

Actually, using the app it's way easier. However, as I'm most of the time using my computer, the app isn't something that I use that often, not really.
Oh yep, I forgot to mention. Using Windows 10 (if it does matter at all) and Firefox :)

Using NVDA, I've had to press N much more times than I actually would like to do just to reach the video's description and sometimes it'll be just after the description, sometimes it won't because it simply doesn't appear on any place at all.
So does anyone have any suggestion about it?

Yes, this is the same, I guess.
At least both of them make the same thing, so...
The only difference that I can think of is that on that Navigational Sounds you have to set manually all the event sounds, which I didn't feel like doing, so I gave up on this.

P.S.: A bit late on this answer, I know, but well.

Hi,
This is the reason why I told everyone yesterday that users should install Add-on Updater 19.02.1A manually.
Speaking of Add-on Updater: it looks like I need to push another mandatory update to this add-on next week. The current solution I wrote as part of 19.02.1A is a temporary one that isn't compatible with Python 3 version of NVDA. The upcoming 19.02.2 will make sure Add-on Updater is both backward and forward compatible.

Re: Addon updater

Hi,

No because 19.02.2 restores Python 3 compatibility, and current version isn’t python 3 compatible (at least one particular area of code; previously it was Python 3 compatible but in an attempt to fix compatibility with older NVDA releases, a method that was optimized for Python 2 was selected on a temporary basis).

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,
I'm on the Alpha channel.
So let's say, if I still choose to wait beyond the 2019.0.2.2, from this point I'll be able to update it automatically?

Hi,

Depends on which NVDA version you’ve got:

  • 2018.4.1: manual update is mandatory.
  • Alpha/beta: automatic update will work.

However, for this one and upcoming 19.02.2, you SHOULD update manually.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,
If I choose to wait for the next version of add-on updater, will I still need to update it manually or can I simply update from the version I have right now to the newer one?

Re: rescue disc for the blind?

I suspect the problem is hardware-related unless something very unusual happened such as a power failure during a defrag or some other maintenance that moves information around such as check disk.  You may find something you can use as you wish but before putting much time and effort into working with the machine, I think a sighted person should say what the screen states.  For all we know, this could be a motherboard problem and the machine may not even get to the point where BIOS is being loaded.  Or it may be a hard drive problem.

Subject: [nvda] rescue disc for the blind?

A friend has an old DELL XP that, as he puts it, finally crashed. When I pressed for more detail, all he could tell me was that windows wasn't loading and JAWS wasn't coming on. After 20 minutes trying, and failing, to extract some more useful information, I finally resolved to trying to locate a recovery disc image, an image that had a lot of tools to possibly repair the system or transfer files from the hard drive to an external place. I could not find any for the blind. Could someone direct me to similar recovery disc images that have speech output or similar? Thanks in advance. He does not have his initial XP recovery disc.

The letters are always in uppercase in brf files. It's the standard.
