It won't work.  How can you install XP in a Win7 environment?  Windows XP is archaic.  You can do what you can do with it.  You will be able to do increasingly less over time.
 
And you would very likely have to run a Windows 7 32 bit environment because the machine being used is very likely a 32 bit machine.

I haven't tried the Windows 7 WinPE to install XP, but I'd give it a try.
The worse that could happen is that it will tell you that this installer does not support the operating system.
But I am guessing that it is backward compatible.
To use it, you burn the WinPE ISO to a DVD and boot up to it, and pull out the DVD and put in your Windows install DVD and run the setup.exe file on the install disk.

I haven't tried the Windows 7 WinPE to install XP, but I'd give it a try.

I personally don't use the autoforms mode setting as I prefer to go in and out of forms or focus mode when working with edit boxes. Yes, I agree that it's important to learn how to work with edit boxes by reinforcing forms mode or focus mode rather than use the automatic setting.

Yes, it does so automatically and I think that is a terrible feature to have on when teaching someone to use the Internet.  the person has enough to learn without worrying about things like that arrowing causes this to occur and that tabbing doesn't.  I don't know what happens when you move using quick navigation commands but I suspect you stay in browse mode.  It would be really inconvenient if you wanted to move by edit field until you find the one you want and to have browse mode turn off every time you type e.  And not using this automation allows the user to reinforce the difference between browse mode and forms mode and when you use which because changing the mode is not automatic.

Does NVDA have an auto edit mode in web pages like JFW?
I usually arrow down the page and Jaws automatically goes into edit mode when it moves into an edit field.
The only time this is a pain is when I'm on a page with a lot of edit fields, and I can't seem to get out of them because every time I arrow down the page it pongs into another one.

There may be something that is a problem with how firefox works with the site.  Whether it is firefox or NVDA, I have no idea.  But when you turn browse mode off on any site, never assume where you are.  Always check by reading the current line, by shift tabbing and then tabbing or the opposite, tabbing and shift tabbing, to see if you are where you were in browse mode.  You can never assume that you will always be in the same place.

Using NVDA 2018.2.1 with Firefox 61.2.0 (portable version), Recently I surfed a website created using drupal. When I press E to jump to an edit field, and press Space to switch to focus mode, NVDA sometimes responds slowly, or lose the focus. Thus I might activate the wrong object on the web. Don't know this is the problem from NVDA with that firefox version or not so I post here. If this is an issue, hope this would be fixed. If anybody know how to solve, please show me the step.

Perhaps the ADA should be amended to cover private companies as well...
Though I'm not in the US and so can't really petition Congress, but maybe someone in the US could create an online petition to ask Congress to amend the ADA to cover private companies. This is not about regulating the internet, this is about protecting the rights of people with disabilities.

I think that for a site that mainly sells to the Blind, he may find it important to make the page more accessible so it works with all screenreaders.
I can understand if another business that does not target the visually impaired has little motivation to make their page work with all screenreaders in a better way.

I can remember when there was no such thing as a virtual buffer or browse mode or whatever the various flavors of screen readers wish to call it. It was a nightmare! I think Dr. Rick has it right--we have tools in the toolbox for a reason. I've seen this so often! I think we need to be reasonable in our requests. If the site truly is unusable, or if we spend an hour filling out a form that should've taken us 10 minutes w/accessibility in place, then, yes, of course, they need to be contacted. But if all that's required is a few judicious presses of the down arrow key, then I'm not sure that making demands & saying they should be shuttered is at all reasonable. I think many truly don't understand what's involved in constructing a website, as well as the expense involved. For large institutions, it's a drop in the bucket. For small businesses, it can spell the difference between keeping the lights on & not being able to support one's family. Truly liberal application of the golden rule makes the world a better place for all to live in & let live. & the truth is that it is possible to be 100% in compliance w/accessibility guidelines & nonetheless have a completely unusable site, while the converse is also at least partially true. But the truth is totally that if folks don't avail themselves, for whatever the reasons, of the tools at their disposal, they're going to miss out on an awful lot.

The problem is that the site is based on older technology. No--the tab
key does not work particularly well on the site, as is the case w/many sites.
But using arrow keys works very well. Using them, all form fields are
labeled, etc, using latest stable NVDA, Firefox, & Chrome.

I think there is a setting for autoforms mode. It's in the browse mode setting. You have to check the box that says "karetbrowsing".

Does NVDA have an auto edit mode in web pages like JFW?
I usually arrow down the page and Jaws automatically goes into edit mode when it moves into an edit field.
The only time this is a pain is when I'm on a page with a lot of edit fields, and I can't seem to get out of them because every time I arrow down the page it pongs into another one.

guess that some people feel that we should not express our problems
when they should know better there is just no excuse for this
problem to occure especially on a blindness site they should be

My work-around for not knowing which checkbox is for which item is to go back up to the top and see which comes first, the item or the checkbox, if it comes first on the first item, it should be the same all the way down the page.

There lots of sites like this. Some work in jaws but not nvda and some the reverse. Does anyone know if there is an agreed convention to where the text of the field identifier should be or whether a page author can add some code to force screen readers to read it?
I've also come across the same issue on surveys where one does not know if the checkbox or radio button is before or after the legend and in others graphic tags are used with no alt tags.
Somebody needs to sort these issues out and come up with hard and fast rules for everyone to use I think.

Issue with Firefox

 

To all lister
Using NVDA 2018.2.1 with Firefox 61.2.0 (portable version), Recently I surfed a website created using drupal. When I press E to jump to an edit field, and press Space to switch to focus mode, NVDA sometimes responds slowly, or lose the focus. Thus I might activate the wrong object on the web. Don't know this is the problem from NVDA with that firefox version or not so I post here. If this is an issue, hope this would be fixed. If anybody know how to solve, please show me the step.

Not sure exactly, but looking at the release notes below, there's 1 bit about email security being improved. The link is below. I'd look in the help section if I were you but I wasn't able to find much. I do know that IMAP is not supported, so you absolutely have to connect via POP, which is a deal breaker for me. I'm sticking with TB for now, mainly because my TB runs from my dropbox so I never need to install it again.

OE Classic accessible spell checker

 

That bit about the spell checker not being available in the free version of OE classic? I get it that people hate thunderbird, but this isn't for me. I'm sticking with TB and windows mail and all of these. I'm including this here so that other people can learn what accessibility enhancements are being done. I included their email before the message, too.

In today's update of OE Classic we've added and improved the spell checker. It is now available for Windows 7 and earlier and what is relevant for the accessibility is that it opens in a new window, like a traditional spell checker so each word which is misspelled can be reviewed. To open it you can use F7 key on the keyboard.


The spell checker is the latest addition to the Pro version and will not be available in the free version (version 2.9, released on 2018-09-04). Further work on accessibility will be done as well. Also, we figured that the accelerator keys would also be useful so they can too be used to trigger the buttons such as Alt+I to press the Ignore button.

We also plan spell checker as you type. Of course, the usual spell check as you type is not of much use to blind users as it underlines the misspelled words with the red color. This of course cannot be seen. But, what we plan is to add a sound notification (like a bell or another configurable sound) so when each word is misspelled as soon as you move on to the next word, the previous one will sound the notification sound. The sound will be configurable via options (or no sound, if the user doesn't prefer to have one and just wants to use the F7-key spell checker). This is not implemented yet, but we do plan it as there is a good number of users who want to spell check as they type and adding a sound at the same time when a word is marked with the red color is just a minor addition to the program so not a big deal to implement, and we can understand how that might be useful.

Well I often see a similar effect if I close Word, but the freeze is less than five seconds normally, and yes its always been around on xp and 7. Even on fast machines so I'm thinking it might be bit of a red herring. I can look at a log and find quite a few core frozen in stack items, but often they are so fleeting that if they cause any problem, it might be no reading of a web page or no indication of where you are, ie unknown, and you can usually recover it by making things refresh.

I'm not sure this is a problem. It is very common, when I close a program that I am not actually in any program. I may hear something when I read the title bar suchh as the name of the program I was just in or some related name. If I go to the desktop, everything is as it should be and if I alt tab around, everything is normal with no window open that shouldn't be. This is with Windows XP. I use Windows 7 but not with enough use or variety of use to say if this happens in that version.

Is the original problem as I described or is it that NVDA stops speaking no matter what you do and you must close and run it again?

Just tried to duplicate this. Indeed after closing the system information with alt f4 it seems that NVDA goes silent. after the alt f4 is pressed Nvda says unknown. Sighted help says I am back to the desktop and nothing is shown besides my normal desktop. However if you hit windows key m speech returns. Seems that something is open that is minimized by windows key m.
