Hi,

Also, Add-on Updater must be told to check for updates for add-ons, and I guess that could be a factor here.

Cheers,

Joseph

When is the last time you exited NVDA and started it again?  Unless I'm imagining things, I only get these notifications from Add-On Updater when I am starting up NVDA, and even then only once per day if (or some day-ish length period) if I decide to skip them.  If I exit and restart NVDA for around 24 hours after a "no thanks" response I'm not asked again.

Hi

Which synth package are you using? if it uses a add on it might have to be updated to the latest one for it to work with the newer version of nvda? or are you using a alfa copy of nvda?

Might I also say that if you invoke the run dialog (windows key + r)
then type cmd & press *control+enter* as opposed to just enter alone,
you'll also get an administrative (elevated) command prompt.

It is an instance of Command Prompt being run with administrative
privileges.  This is a frequently used term, which is why I use it, and
yours is a frequent question from those encountering it for the first time.
But when you see it elsewhere, whether in reference to Command Prompt or
PowerShell, it means you've opened it with "Run as Admin" selected.  The
window frame for the session itself should have "Administrator: " in the
title before either Command Prompt or PowerShell, depending on which you're
using.

Remember, that even if you are using an account with administrative
privileges, neither Command Prompt or Power Shell will open with those
active unless you specifically invoke them with Admin privilege.

If you hit WinKey+X, then down arrow or up arrow to the entry for Command
Prompt or PowerShell, there will be two entries, one with "(Admin)" next to
the name and that's the one that opens an elevated session.  The one where
it's not present gives you more typical user privileges, not full admin
privileges, for that session.

In an elevated command prompt . . .
Try running an:  SFC /scannow
then follow that with a:  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then see what happens afterward.

The group owner and I have repeatedly asked that this question not be posted to the group.   Releases show up when releases show up, period, end of sentence.  Announcements occur on this group and several other venues, as well as the NVAccess News Page as beta versions are released and release candidates as well.

There are so many factors that can change the release timeline that any guess, prior to beta stage, is subject to substantial change.

Please watch these pages, the News Page, the In Process publication (every new one has its presence made known here), and other blind-centric tech venues.

It'll get here when it gets here is the short answer.

No, as far as I know, any screen reader announces row and columns titles unless they are defined in Excel...

The NVDA commands define that in Excel, at least they used to do that...

Please note the issue of NVDA do not announce them when using UIAutomation in Excel...

Yes I am aware of this method to define column and row headings. I just do not understand why this method is necessary for having column headings announced in a simple table in Excel. Both Jaws and Narrater (I think) will announce Excel table column headings without first manually defining them.

Anyway thanks a lot for your reply Brian.

Windows 10 App Essentials 21.04 released #addonrelease

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 21.04 is now available.

In addition to source code refinements, this update is dedicated to Calculator app. Specifically:

  • NvDA will announce results window when Delete (including Numpad Delete) is pressed to clear results.
  • NVDA will braille expressions and results on a braille display.

IMPORTANT NOTICE on Windows 10 feature update compatibility: the next version of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on will be the last version to support Windows 10 Version 2004 (May 2020 Update/build 19041). Also, although not set in stone yet, the next version may also require NVDA 2020.4 or later.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Luke

yes that was one of the things I got him to do as well. It should not be clobbering nvda when there is a windows update so what was mentioned happened. he also said he knows of other people using chrome and nvda but no problems when it updates windows they do not have to re install nvda.

Thanks Brian I will pass on that suggestion to him as well and also thanks to the other gene for the idea but it should not have to be done hopefully but may be on the cards.

I have never come across that type of problem and have been using nvda for years and not heard of others either having this problem.

Well, it is for me as that is the only time I got computer training. So yes, for me it is relevant. And jaws did say “ control v, pastes in text from the clipboard” but  then again FS holds your hand too much, which is why I love  NVDA. It expects you to know what to do. No hand holding. It just works, most of the time.

Note well what follows the word "and."  CTRL+V is not an NVDA Command, it is a Windows Command.  My understanding of both NVDA Help and its JAWS analog are that each will only present descriptions of key sequences that are associated with the screen reader functions, and nothing else.  Windows functions are not part of JAWS or NVDA nor are specific program shortcuts that the screen reader is interacting with.  I'd expect that giving any shortcut sequence not associated with NVDA itself will result in silence.

StationPlaylist add-on 21.04/20.09.7-LTS #addonrelease

Hi all,

StationPlaylist add-on 21.04 and 20.09.7-LTS are now available .Version 21.04 (stable channel) requires NVDA 2020.4 or later, whereas 20.09.7-LTS (long-term support) will work on NVDA 2019.3 or later. Note that 20.09.7-LTS is the last 20.09.x release, and support for 20.09,x will end once the next stable version is released.

The key changes in this release include a critical fix to let the add-on work on future NVDA releases. As such, please upgrade to these releases.

I don't know if there is a solution. However, you can avoid starting with default settings if you remove and reinstall NVDA. Make a portable copy from the installed NVDA before updating Windows. Then, after the update, uninstall NVDA, run the portable version, and install NVDA using the install option in the portable version.

If you need more information about the create portable and install options, ask. They are in the Tools menu. When you run either option, tab through the first screen and check the checkbox for copying the current configuration, or whatever is the applicable wording for what you are doing.

hi guys

I had a person contact me about the following problem below.

I gave them a few suggestions to sus out first. One making sure there
version of nvda is up to date and they do not have any add ons. They are
using the chrome browser as well.

I got them to check also the time on the computer to see if it is still
keeping time etc just in case it was causing problems with the time
stamp with the browser and throwing up this problem.

Has any one else had this problem below? I have also got them to change
there level to debug under general but it seems it only happens with a
update of "Windows.

If you did have this problem how did you fix it?

Both my friend and I are visually impaired, so we still use a mouse with
NVDA, my system is working very well but what is happening with my
friend Karen’s on her laptop is every time Microsoft do a major upgrade
her NVDA stops working.
when she tries loading a page off Google Chrome NVDA responds by saying
Chrome legacy error and when she puts the mouse pointer over text it
says null and will not read it.
The only way to fix this problem has been to totally remove NVDA and
reinstall it and this works successfully each time
Her laptop is an Acer aspire, approximately 6 years old end running
windows 10 and Google Chrome browser.
I have tried changing the default browser to Edge but with the same
results.
