Capchars.
A worrying trend recently seems to be that you get asked to click on the picture containing a whatever. I have not found any work around for these.
The old wobbly ones have an audio but with a hearing loss I'd imagine its almost impossible to understand them.
I seriously feel that blindness organisations in countries that have disability laws should be funding class actions against sites using these things. They soon find another way if it starts to affect their bottom lines

The best solution I've seen recently is random questions.
Ie Which is the colour that the sky is unlikely to ever be.
Black, purple dotted grey etc

Hello Steve,
First, welcome to this list. I'm sure you'll learn and teach good things
here over the time.
Sorry but I don't know how to answer your first question.
Regarding the second one:
1. If you press NVDA+2, it won't speak what you type anymore.
Also, if you press NVDA+3, it will speak every word you type after
pressing space.
2. I understand that what you are saying is you're not able to press the
let's say capslock key because it's assigned to NVDA.
If it's the case, no problem at all. Just press it twice or even turn on
NVDA sleep mode and turn it off when you've done what you want.
There's also a third way to do it that is to press NVDA+F2, which will
make it ignore whatever the key you press after this. So, if you press
NVDA+F2 and try to press NVDA+N it won't work unless you do it twice.

Cheers,
Marcio

If thats the case the machine may be full of dust and need a clear out.

Get a sightling to see if all the fans are spinning right.

I have had bad ram sticks, and faulty cpu fans cause issues, the power supply could also have issues.

Failing that, I'd remove and regrease the heatsink it doesn't hurt to do this from time to time.

I have had office screw itself over a couple times randomly my guess it was updating or syncing or something when the machine was switched off.

You can run an online repair by choosing modify from the list, hightlight ms office, tab once and you can modify or remove, hit modify and then online repair.

You can try quick but it may not work for you.

A small note though, if you do this, any pinned office icons and desktop shortcuts will be gone till you put them back.

You will also have to put in your product key again But it will fix all the screwed up office pluss it will be the latest updated version of whatever you have.

Is your internet connection on the blink. I've seen this sort fo problem in other mail clients when the server is very slow or the internet connection is not so good. Eventually it should give a message of some sort, but if you do not wait long enough and try to come out you will get the messages waiting warning.
Might be a good idea to try a web browser when its stuck and see if that can get on.

Hi all!
With Win10, here is how you put apps on the desktop, or at least a short cut for them LOL:
First, press Windows key+R to open the run dialog!
Then, type the following:
shell:appsfolder
And press enter.
Now, you will be in a list of all apps.
Just find mail in the list, and press shift+F10 or applications key.
Arrow down to create short cut.
Press enter, and you will hear:
Cannot create short cut here, would like to add this to the desktop?
Just press enter on yes, and the app will be put on the desktop.
It is a lot different putting a short cut to an app on the desktop than a traditional short cut for a computer program like MS Word, for example!
Have a great one!

will go silent. No amount of tabbing or arrowing will cure its case of
laryngitis. So far the only way I can restore its voice is to press
control alt N to restart it. Is there a quicker way to start it talking

Hi,

You’ll need Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (Version 1709) or later in order to insert emojis.

There is a tutorial I wrote (featured on most recent Top Tech Tidbids) that goes over emoji panel and how it works, as well as what to expect in coming months with this feature:

Note that the tutorial tries to be screen reader agnostic but most of it applies to NVDA users. Don’t worry about the bit on Insider Preview changes to emoji panel – that’s in the future, and I have already written workarounds for it (part of an add-on, and plan to send the code to NV Access for inclusion in a future version of NVDA).

Cheers,

Re: having a weird problem with Nvda and microsoft outlook

Chris Mullins

Hi Molly

I have been using Outlook for years and get the “unavailable” message most days, particularly when Outlook is loading.  It usually means Outlook is busy performing a task and I have never had to do anything about it.  I have found that the best policy with Outlook is to keep the Outlook database size as small as possible., so you should regularly go through Inbox messages and either save or delete them.  if you want to keep a copy of a particular message, move it to another folder or press the delete key, which will save it in your deleted items folder, for a message you don’t want to save, press shift+delete, which will remove it from the Outlook database altogether.  If you have lots of messages, you may also periodically run the archive feature of Outlook.  This allows you to set-up criteria for example “select messages sent/received prior to 1st Jan 2018” and specify the name of an archive database you wish to use or create.  You can then open your deleted items folder, and start the  archive process.  Repeat this process for your Sent items folder and any other folders you have stored messages in.  This will trim your main Outlook.pst database down in size so it will load faster and be more responsive.  If you need to refer back to messages you have archived, they are stored in Archived.pst (or whatever you named your database), which you can access using control+y.

Depending on how you have configured Outlook, it will periodically scan for new messages coming in and messages you want to send out.  This means it will poll your email account provider for new messages, putting them in the Inbox folder and pass any messages you have written, stored in your Outbox folder, to your provider for sending out.  If you want to do a Send/Receive session immediately, you press f9.

The message you got when you tried to shut Outlook down was that there were unsent messages in the Outbox which had not yet been passed to your email provider for distribution.  If messages build up in the Outbox, this would be indicative of a connection problem between Outlook and your email account.  If pressing f9 does not clear your outbox, check your Outlook connection settings for your email account are Ok and that your email account is up and running OK.  The Outlook connection dialog has a test button which generates a test message to show Outlook and your email account are configured correctly.

Cheers

Chris

Re: CAPTCHA AND KEYBOARD SETTINGS

Hello Steve,
First, welcome to this list. I'm sure you'll learn and teach good things here over the time.
Sorry but I don't know how to answer your first question.
Regarding the second one:
1. If you press NVDA+2, it won't speak what you type anymore.
Also, if you press NVDA+3, it will speak every word you type after pressing space.
2. I understand that what you are saying is you're not able to press the let's say capslock key because it's assigned to NVDA.
If it's the case, no problem at all. Just press it twice or even turn on NVDA sleep mode and turn it off when you've done what you want.
There's also a third way to do it that is to press NVDA+F2, which will make it ignore whatever the key you press after this. So, if you press NVDA+F2 and try to press NVDA+N it won't work unless you do it twice.

Secondly my keyboard using NVDA is reading every single character. How do I change this to reading words and numbers for example? As a supplementary from that, if needing to press the NVDA key ie  the big key on keypad, how does one do this if you also have other keys to press? I cannot use either caps lock or the bottom left key above the cursor keys t as these are used for other things?

Sorry I don’t use cameras so haven’t got a picture yet and also apologies that this email has been long.

Thanks, Steve

Well taking the christmas thing to a slightly new tangent while we can talk about such things, anyone had any new interesting weird but still christmas themed food this year.

For me, it was christmas mince pies, which were quite large almost like small muffins.

Half the filling was the standard christmas mince, but the rest was lemon jam and honey, and those were served hot.

I never thought about having jam on my pies, its actually quite good.

Re: outlook is working again...

Re: having a weird problem with Nvda and microsoft outlook

I have had office screw itself over a couple times randomly my guess it was updating or syncing or something when the machine was switched off.

You can run an online repair by choosing modify from the list, hightlight ms office, tab once and you can modify or remove, hit modify and then online repair.

You can try quick but it may not work for you.

A small note though, if you do this, any pinned office icons and desktop shortcuts will be gone till you put them back.

You will also have to put in your product key again But it will fix all the screwed up office pluss it will be the latest updated version of whatever you have.

Well this is confusing.

I went to the add or remove programs setting, and instead of listing the outlook app, it had Microsoft desktop apps, which looked like one big software package, (don’t want to uninstall that because it might uninstall word, powerpoint, etc), or something called My office.

It seems ever since this machine received windows version 17763 it has been a little buggy. I’ll try running outlook in safe mode.

Re: I am really loving Nvda's object navigation

Gene

It can't be used everywhere but there are times when it is the most easy and intuitive way to move around a screen.  I may write some information about review mode tomorrow.  I don't think it will require much explanation.  I don't know what Lee already wrote about it in the tutorial he did.  I may see if I have it and give the topic for people to listen to.

Hi all,

For anyone wishing to write a tutorial or two on review modes, I highly recommend going over what review cursor is, how it works and how it can be used before talking about three different review modes/scopes (object, document, screen). Also, please don’t tell people that screen review can be used everywhere – I and others have given countless proofs to the contrary.

Cheers,

Joseph

I think screen review is a way to get around the screen when you can’t do it with just regular keystrokes.

I never use screen review, I alwyas use object nav as for me I can get around and skip windows I don't want to see. the laptop layout even though I'm using a full sized keyboard as it just feels more like mac os for me.

Screen review is very easy to explain in terms of how you switch to it and use it and I will discuss it if people want to know.

Hi,

As I said multiple times before, screen review won’t work in newer apps, but I do agree that in some cases, screen review is helpful for some tasks.

However, there are times when screen review provides access to the same things and is more convenient to use.  Object navigation can provide access to things at times that screen review can't.

Hi,

One important thing to remember: I recommend using object navigation for cases where you can’t navigate with a keyboard. Object navigation commands (and for that matter, Golden Cursor add-on) won’t replace the value of using keyboard commands (let’s not go into Golden Cursor add-on, as it is way different than object navigation). Part of what makes NvDA useful (or for that matter, any screen reader useful) is distinguishing when different methods are appropriate.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi.

Happy holidays.

I’ve not tried the golden cursor yet, but it sounds interesting. My goal is to be able to use object navigation in all my favorite apps, word, outlook, etc. It’ll probably make navigating them much easier. It really is neat.

Yes!

That is why I love NVDA so much!

You can get to every element on the screen whether it be a toolbar, a button on the toolbar, or what ever!

It is beautiful to have the Golden cursor add-on to navigate with the mouse as well!

Go NVDA!

Have a great holiday everyone!

Hey guys, Molly here again.

I just like to say that I really like Nvda’s way of navigating objects. It is great to be able to press Nvda plus shift and the arrow keys to explore items on the screen I never thought were there. I am fascinated by how it works. It actually reminds me of how VoiceOver works on the Mac, but I don’t want to get in to that.

Anyway, it’s very cool.

Happy Holidays
