Re: Some add-ons fail to install/work under NVDA 2018.4

Hi,

In case of Emoticons add-on, it might be that something is holding onto manifest file somehow, thus preventing package deletion.

As for config file error: might be caused by nvda.ini becoming corrupt.

In both cases, I advise:

  1. Log off the computer (not restart).
  2. Log back in.
  3. Download and install the add-ons in question manually.

Cheers,

Joseph

Subject: [nvda] Some add-ons fail to install/work under NVDA 2018.4

Hello all,

A friend of mine has reported to me a problem with his copy of NVDA 2018.4. Some add-ons fail to install/work under this version of NVDA. It is an installed copy of NVDA. He sent me the log file. I can see some errors about the "Emoticons" (v9.0 if I'm not mistaking) and "Windows 10 App Essentials" add-ons, but I don't understand what the errors mean. I'm pasting his log file here, in case someone can help us to solve this issue.

Thanks much in advance!

Here's the log:

That may be what is supposed to occur, but time after time it goes mute and does not use the built in secure screen reader. Its not just that its opened behind either, even alt tabbing will not reveal it. I guess putting narrator on before an install may work, I've never tried it. Its my feeling that in some circumstances the cut down bit of nvda which is supposed to run in this situation cannot read the screen unless its actually in focus and for some reason alt tabbing never actually achieves this, at least from my experience.

Ah fantastic - ignore the email I just sent then :)

Re the dialog not reading properly - it should read ok, however it uses a
different NVDA profile. To have it read in the voice you prefer:
1) Setup NVDA as you like (synthesizer, rate, etc)
2) Press NVDA+CONTROL+C to save changes.
3) Press NVDA+CONTROL+G to open the general settings.
4) Press TAB until the focus is on the "Use currently saved settings on the
logon and other secure screens" button
5) Press SPACEBAR or ENTER to activate the button.
6) If you have any add-ons, a dialog appears warning that these can be a
security risk (not that there is a risk from any specific add-ons, just a
general warning). Press ENTER to accept this.
7) A UAC dialog appears. press ALT+Y accept the prompt.

Quentin.

The problem is, Janet that you often have a catch 22 issue in this sort of case. NVDA doing a full update has probably decoupled all the old files and so there is no screenreader to read it, hence the noise. I know its not advisable according to many here, but if you are careful what you install and only you uses the machine, turn uac off completely. It will complain about it at first but life is a lot simpler with it gone!

I do not think this is the problem here, it sounds to me more like a weird impossible to write to a folder issue. Maybe an existing file is locked permanently due to a bad shutdown. There are some unlock programs around that can sort this sort of issue out.

I have had this scenario on a system that failed due to a powercut during antimalware scan and updates.

You need to remove and reinstall the sound drivers though they may be corrupted.

Next make a new account, copy in all your data, and delete the old profile because its corrupted.

A small note, if windows frequently does this it could be corrupted.

If that is the case, reformat and it will go away.

But if it continues to do this every so often, and even if it doesn't I would strongly recomend people to get a ups, now I realise ups devices and their power cells are expensive and that some of their software may not be the best, access wize but that should at least save your bacon, this home network has 2 ups devices

One of them is quite old and we have a newer one on the workstation.

In addition, due to a server upgrade at my dad's work we have recieved an old one which we have serviced but not put anywhere, so that may replace the oldest box.

Make sure you have serge boxes, for all electronics.

Note, these are not the common cheap as chips chinese 6 dollare crapware, you need or should have a special one designed for eletronics, they are heavier and do cost 30 bucks or so but in my view are well worth the price.

Hello all,

Thanks for your feedback so far in helping me to solve this problem. I am

for a few minutes. During that time I alt-tab numerous times to make sure
I’m not missing the screen. Pretty much immediately after the beeping

Hopefully this provides some further clarification.

Now I had a similar issue with virtual recorder after a windows update. I had to uninstall it and reinstall it again and it then functioned. It would not be the first time a windows update has altered a file modified by another program and made it non functional.

Hi.

How are you trying to open it?

Are your file associations set to VlC?

What happens when you open it using the search box or run dialog?

If you've tried everything and there's simply no VLC window opening, it may
be time to re-install. There's nothing special related to starting VlC; it
should open like any other programme.

Problems with english £ sign in Espeak NG in laatest release

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Hi, While proof reading some documents in Word today using the latest nvda and its inbuilt Espeak NG I encountered an issue. although it can speak the £ sign when cursoring through a line, it will not say it when reading lines or in say all. However installing Speach player in Espeak fixes the problem. Can somebody sort this out?
I could send a message to Espeak group, or raise an issue on nvda, but I suspect this is an Espeak issue and as such might be better if somebody who is an NVDA developer approached the Espeak team, as it is probably just a small issue.

Here is a test bit of text to try it on.

RNIB Connect London are organising a meet up for this event at Angel Tube Station on the Northern Line. Please e-mail Networklondon@rnib.org.uk or call 020 7391 2152 to express your interest and book a place on the touch tour (free) or for the theatre performance (from £16.50).

Re: Reading emoticons and Kazakh language for eSpeak NG

ChrisLeo

Hello,
I think that isn't a problem.
In voice setting dialog by default the level of symbols is "Some", and the level for each emoji in the dialog Punctuation/symbol pronunciation is "Some".
You can customize these levels as you prefer, but by default NVDA reads emojis as expected.

Chris.

In reply to Adil Uralbaev, 19/12/2018 13:16:

Hello. I managed to solve the problem. In the NVDA menu, a submenu of
Preferences, there is the item "Punctuation/symbol pronunciation...".
This dialog box has all the smilies. You need to select the desired
emoticon and the "Nothing" level and save the changes. In this case,
the emoticon will be read correctly. This should be done for each
emoticon, which, unfortunately, is not very convenient. And you need
to make changes for each language. I hope these problems will be fixed
in the next updates.
Thanks for attention.

Hi,
probabily you are using "None" as level for Punctuation/symbol
pronunciation.
Raise the level to "Some" or more with nvda+P then try to read emoji.

Make sure that the checkbox "Include Unicode Consortium data" in the
voice setting dialog is enabled.

obviously, the emoji dictionaries from espeak.ng aren't available on
NVDA 2018.4.

Cheers,

Chris.

Could you please give me the address of a page - there are different

I also noticed that some emoticons are pronounced only when if you
move the cursor arrows on it, as if you want to read the previous or
the next character. And if you read, using the up and down arrows,
they are not pronounced, only the word "Graphics" is pronounced.

Re: Some add-ons fail to install/work under NVDA 2018.4

Clare Page <clare.page@...>

Hi!

I also had the problem that the new version of the Emoticons add-on failed to install: in my case there was an error with the installation of that add-on’s update when I used the add-on updater to do it. But the Emoticons add-on installed normally when I downloaded it from the website and did the installation by opening the add-on from where it got downloaded to.

By the way, I couldn’t download NVDA 2018.4 using Check For Updates the other day either, once again I actually had to download the ;exe file to update NVDA, so I wonder if there is some gproblem with NVDA updates generally, either the program itself or add-ons.

Thanks in advance for any explanation if there is one.

Bye for now!

Re: Reading emoticons and Kazakh language for eSpeak NG

Adil Uralbaev <adiluralbaev@...>

Cheers,

Chris.

Read back code in python shell

Jo Collingwood

Hi I’m supporting students and want to introduce them to writing code using python. I have downloaded python 3.7 and it reads what I type into the shell but when I press enter it does not read. Nor will it read back anything else in the shell.
Can anyone please tell me how I can make it read back when in the shell, thanks

Hi,

it is a software for midi songs and you can mute the melody when you want sing.

This software works with Jaws, but not with Nvda.

Hi everyone,

I can't use this program with Nvda.

I can not remove the trace of the melody.

Is there an addon about it?

Thank you.

Re: Problem installing update

That is really unusual. You should definitely get a UAC dialog when trying

Hello all,

Thanks for your feedback so far in helping me to solve this problem. I am
running Windows 10. I do not get any sound indication of the screen asking
me to allow the program to make changes to my system. I get the dialog
telling me to wait while the setup is being prepared. Then I hear beeping
for a few minutes. During that time I alt-tab numerous times to make sure
I’m not missing the screen. Pretty much immediately after the beeping
stops, I get what I’d describe as a “clang” sound and a message telling me
tht the installation has failed and advising me to check the log bview.

Hopefully this provides some further clarification.

Re: dectalk express u s b

Yes but its 600 bucks us.

Thats more than sapi synths.

Saying that, I am seriously thinking of the tripple talk usb mini which is only 200 bucks along with the vocaliser code factory voices for sapi which I may get at a later date.

To be honest,  a general user doesn't need to have a portable synth.

However, if you are a technition like me that could use a synth and not a sound card then that may be good especially if your sound device just flatly refuses to work.

There have been situations where I didn't have my usb devices or my mergency crappy usb set for speech and it was a real pain.

I have had systems I have got repaired only to start them and find no sound.

So before I even can use whoever's system I need to reformat it because I don't get sound.

Of course I can afford only 1 or 2 synths a year.

So the tripple talk usb could be in my price range of 200 us which is my maximum.

it seems that it will work using the serial port using an adapter from u s b, but it will not work directly from a u s b connection.
I wish someone would correct this as I’d like to use the dectalk

Re: Advantages of NVDA over narrator on public terminals

True, and if you don't use addons or you just want to use it for certain things then that would be fine to.

Hi,

I guess you do not run a huge network like they do, and you are not having to worry about security of a network of that size. I could not see them updating NVDA 4 times a year on 400 computers every 3 months.

It is not a home network which of course you could update more regularly and also use add ons etc. I know that on the APNK network you can use your portable stable signed version which might be more up to date.

Your alternative I guess is Narrator for places who do not have NVDA. I applaud Christchurch City Libraries for their initiative to enhance accessibility for those who need audio on a computer.

I have not asked them about portable access yet. I think it is better to have a slightly older version (which will be updated at least yearly around February) that is stable than none at all.

Well thats nice, but it would actually be good if the latest version was put on all computers, and maybe have it do it automatically same with addons used etc, point is we are now in to 2018.4 what is the use to have an old crappy version.

If 18.3.2 is only just going now, users will be out of date.

I guess it doesn't matter if they are all jaws users or havn't used nvda before, but its just that roling out nvda in its current form is a waste of time now.

I thought it was going to be rolled out early next year, but it looks like an early Christmas present for Christchurch!

There are parts of the message below:

So … the install of NVDA version 2018.3.2 is completed on our public computers.

I aI’m happy to tell you that we have 19 libraries which all have at least one free internet computer each;

· A total of 225 free internet computers across the Christchurch City Libraries network
In addition to this we have the following types of public computers which we will also install NVDA on as part of the rollout

· 20 Childrens PCs; 30 Family History PCs; 120 Learning Centre Lab PCs

This means that NVDA is now installed at 19 libraries across Christchurch! (This is about 390 computers which are to be updated annually from now on).

https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/faq/computers/#faq_5895

In the link to the FAQ page (which says about accessibility options on their computers), NVDA is now on that list! You can not start it with a shortcut, however you can still start it quite easily through the search box by typing in NVDA and pressing Enter. The Windows log on option has been disabled. This is where it says Use NVDA on the Windows logon screen.

Please spread the word if you know of anyone who would find this useful when visiting Christchurch City Libraries! This is not just for blind and vision impaired, but may also assist people who have dyslexia or are ESOL.

Gene NZ

Narrator in Windows 10 is considerably more capable from discussions I've seen here than Narrator on Windows 7. I have Windows 7. Narrator is just the shell of a screen-reader in that version of Windows, alright for emergencies where you lose the use of a competent screen-reader for some reason but it would be next to useless on a public terminal because it is next to useless everywhere.

also, I know that Narrator is moving toward using more standard screen-reader commands in Windows 10. I don't know how far that move has gone but I would think that a lot more screen-reader users would regularly use NVDA. There is a certain level of reasonable access and reasonable standardization and unless Narrator has changed very dramatically recently in Windows 10, it doesn't meet those needs. Plus, from discussions I've seen here, Narrator is limited to Microsoft programs in terms of providing reasonable or something like reasonable access. Unless these public terminals provide only Microsoft programs, that is another area of inaccessibility when using Narrator. The blind user would be either fully or mostly limited to Microsoft programs on the machine. If the machine has other programs on it, it appears from discussions I've seen on list, that Narrator wouldn't work adequately, if at all.

Subject: [nvda] Advantages of NVDA over narrator on public terminals

Hi guys,

I got asked this question about the advantages of NVDA over Narrator on public terminals where ever these may be...

I am talking about public terminals that the sighted can use where ever these may be. Places like libraries, information centres airports (where these terminals are) as well etcetera. The commercial screen readers are not in the picture because of price.

The question is below:

" My question to you is what advantages would it give our blind or visually impaired customers having both Windows 10 Narrator and NVDA available to use on public computers? I would be interested in supporting installing it at if there were advantages and we could work thru any technical issues. Let me know what you think".

This same question could also come up at any IT department that is approached to install NVDA to a public terminal (where ever these may be). The above is used as an example.

I am guessing that for any technical information - that could be pointed towards the developers of the NVDA project.

They could be using a windows 7 machine right up to Windows 10.

Looking forward to your feedback on advantages of NVDA over Narrator. Thanks everyone.

Hmm, no. I didn't see it. Looks like I'll need to check out gmail's spam on the web, something I need to periodically do to remind gmail that messages that are legit are being marked as spam. Seems the settings hold for a few months, then Google's memory grows short. I'm sure I have it.

Interesting. You're right. When inside a frame, tabbing till you get
outside the frame doesn't throw things to the top. When outside the
frame, tabbing from anywhere on that page, and all others I've tried so
far on the site, throws it to the first link at the top. Let's see how
other browsers do.

Chrome: things work normally except at the "We believe" heading. Tab
forward doesn't move the cursor. Shift+tab, then tab, lets things be normal.

IE works as expected.

Edge works as expected.

Re: Firefox browsing bug in NVDA 2018.4

Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

Following Tyler's steps exactly, I can confirm this on the NVDA page.

However, this seems to be something to do with the coding on the page.  When I try the same steps on jaws-users.com and microsoft.com, I cannot reproduce.

Now repeat this, but move to the second one, nvAccessLimited inside the
frame.
I'm not placed at the top again.

I assume this is a Firefox bug and not related to NVDA, because tab has
no special meaning to NVDA here, at least according to input help.

If you don't mind experimenting a bit with your installation, go to
the official NVDA site:

https://www.nvaccess.org/

The main page will be good enough as it's site wide for me.

Use the headings shortcut, the letter h, to go down a couple headings.
From there, and it doesn't matter if you do it immediately, or up and
down arrow a bit, tab once.

If you hear the following words,

NV Access Empowering lives through non-visual access to technology

You'll know that you've been returned to the top of the page.

Any other response means that you're not reproducing the same thing I
am here.

Thank you.

However, I noticed earlier while proofing a post on my blog at

yesterday, so will see what develops.

Re: can't get vlc media player to start

Gene

you repeatedly do this.  Get rid of or say you are going to get rid of a program.  You haven't given the list sufficient time to ask about and propose possible solutions.

If you really get rid of the program, let us definitely know so we don't waste time.  If you think better of it, members will still help.  But this pattern of behavior doesn't help you solve the problem nor does it do justice to those who send information or suggestions.

I sent a message before this one with what might be helpful information about solving the problem.  Did I send it for nothing?

Hi.

How are you trying to open it?

Are your file associations set to VlC?

What happens when you open it using the search box or run dialog?

If you’ve tried everything and there’s simply no VLC window opening, it may be time to re-install. There’s nothing special related to starting VlC; it should open like any other programme.
