Hi

Are you saying there is no caps lock key or it just was not checked to use it?

Usually on a keyboard the insert key is above the arrow key there is a 6 pack of keys there and on this one it is the top left one..

also on a numeric key pad it is the zero on it.

You could try one of the following with the number 1 key on the keyboard which would be insert key + 1 this would turn on input help and then you could locate the other insert key or caps lock key then turn it off.

Then use the following nvda key + ctrl key + the letter K for keyboard a menu should come up then tab down to then from there you can pick your keyboard layout and under neath it in my case i have checked all 3 boxes for the modifier key you will need to arrow down to do this and check them with space bar.

hopefully it get you up and running and if happy save your settings.

Hi!

I have an HP Laptop, and the Insert key is holding down the FN key, and pressing the print screen key, the second from the top right!

How come you cannot use your caps lock, because that is what I always use?

Scren reader malfunctioning

Ibrahim Ajayi

Hi good people:
Please I am having problems with my NVDA screen reader. I started
having these problems after a reformatting of my laptop computer a few
days ago.
The first problem is that I cannot change the keyboard layout from
desktop to laptop. When I activate the laptop option, it does not
change from desk top to laptop. I don't understand why this is
happening. I in fact re-installed the program, but the problem has
persisted.
The problem is peculiar with NVDA, because I don't have these problems
with JAWS. Please is there a fix for these problems.
I also want to find out how I can turn on windows defender, or windows
firewall. When I attempted turning on windows defender, by typing
defender in to the search box, and windows defender coming up, I am
unable to pull down the file menu to go to tools, in order to do the
turn on. I even tried using the application key, all to no avail.
Hope to read a response.
From Ibrahim.

Issues using Flash Based Voicemail Website

I'm working with a volunteer who is blind to access an online voicemail system through my.jive.com. The website uses flash software and we're able to access the names of the voicemails using NVDA, but we're not able to click on the links to listen to them.

We're using a HP Pavilion Notebook PC with Windows 10 Home Version 1803.

Does anyone have experience with my.jive.com through Jive Communications?
Has anyone resolved issues when issue flash on a website?

Thanks for your help!

Re: station playlist question

Hi,

Over the years, I have tried, with mixed success, to locate labels for these fields. Because the interface is hosted by a GUI toolkit known for giving me and others headaches in accessibility mitigations, I have given up on it for a while. Ideally, a move to something more accessible (in terms of toolkit) is preferable, but it won’t happen for a while.

What makes these fields challenging is the weird accessibility tree structure as shown to NVDA. Simply put, controls are represented as trees or have hierarchy amongst them, with a clearly defined way to identify which control is hosted by others and ways to move amongst them and retrieve the information NVDA is looking for. But these and some other Delphi controls are known to present weird object hierarchy, and at least twice, I had to tell NVDA to move backwards among controls just to announce SPL dialogs properly. Also, because some controls are laid out like a grid with not very useful accessibility information that NVDA can consume (understand and present), it gave me headache as to how to provide best labels for them automatically, especially dealing with a user interface that might change from time to time.

Fixing this situation and other variants require investment from users, NVDA community, and developer of StationPlaylist Studio. Some of the solutions listed below have advantages and drawbacks, some of them hindrance to future NVDA work:

  1. Just give human-readable labels from NVDA side by probing what is shown on screen. Although this is a good short-term solution, it needs to deal with different screen resolutions, color schemes, use of magnifiers and other situations, and dealing with an API that might not be usable under some circumstances (notably, if you use NVDA as a portable copy, you can’t access certain screen areas).
  2. Changing the toolkit that powers Studio’s interface. This will require investment from all parties involved in testing the toolkit and report accessibility issues. This also means being careful not to compromise user experience from sighted broadcasters in the process, as well as making sure the Studio developer uses a toolkit whose developers are willing to look into possible accessibility issues.
  3. Making the field information static when viewed from accessibility clients. This requires cooperation from the toolkit and from my add-on, as the UI toolkit for Studio must be willing to let controls expose predictable information and for my add-on to catch this once implemented. However, Delphi toolkit might not cooperate though, and dynamic information presented to accessibility clients such as NVDA is what frustrates my effort at times.

A few years ago, I asked the developer of Studio if he is willing to invest in moving to a different toolkit and/or providing UI Automation implementations for screen readers. His response was that it may increase size of the installer, although it is possible. If he does choose UIA, then I need to make sure the UIA implementation is good and solid (not merely good enough, as I deal with and write mitigations for broken UIA fields every day through WinTenApps add-on).

In short, my answer to your question is that we need to continue to advocate – not just through me or my add-ons, but through advocacy of actual users, as this situation deals fundamentally with assumptions and what powers the user interface, not just the program and the add-on.

Cheers,

Joseph

P.S. I realize I’ve become too philosophical recently, but I think, at times, it is best for me to share my inner feelings as a developer so you can see what’s going on.

Hi NVDA users ken with a question. I used station playlist studio for my radio show on out of sight/TAFN and really love the product, but it has one major drawback. When you try to tag a song SPL doesn’t read the fields. It just says edit, edit, edit.  So to prep a show I need to use winamp.  Is there any way to upgrade the add on for SPL so that a user can determine what goes into what field. A good example one of my song files is tagged with a version two tagging. So in winamp it reads correctly but not on SPL. Both artist and title are in the same field and in another field I think the title it’s something like 4. When I tried to play it on a show it wouldn’t play. I think I can correct it or try but it would be easier if I know what is supposed to go into what field.  Any thoughts?

Hi Joe,

The only two pieces of info I have are that I find with an Alva I use
occasionally, I need to start it before starting NVDA. From memory, I
think I used to (maybe an earlier version of Windows 10, or maybe Windows
7) have to have it connected and turned on before starting Windows to
ensure it behaved.

From the User Guide we also say:
https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html#OptelecALVA

"Note: NVDA might be unable to use an ALVA BC6 display over Bluetooth when
it is paired using the ALVA Bluetooth utility. When you have paired your
device using this utility and NVDA is unable to detect your device, we
recommend you to pair your ALVA display the regular way using the Windows
Bluetooth settings." so that could be something to check as well.

Quentin.

Dear all.

as you all know, NVDA 2018.4 is on the way. at the moment, the

developers' version is available to check for probable problems.

there's a problem which I have seen with different versions of NVDA.

it won't say anything in Visual Basic in Microsoft visual studio. I

have tried it on Microsoft visual studio 2010. it's fine with the

design area. but it keeps being completely silent while the text

editor area is on the foreground. I have no account on Github. but if

you have one, please let them know about this very significant

problem, so that it can be fixed in the next release. it's kind of

important. because you can't simply edit what you write within the

text-editing environment. as a result, programming gets difficult on

visual basic in microsoft visual studio 2010, using NVDA. please do

tell the NVAccess team about this major problem. note: this is not the

case with JAWS. it's fine with VB in MS Visual Studio 2010. you can

easily move with design and text-editing area with jaws. therefore,

you can easily edit what you've written in the text editor

environment.

take care.

Hi

Were you able to sort it out with nothing been spoken in all the browsers?

Out of curiosity did you ever install a plug in for nvda called I think it was called 7. Reading Mathematical Content
Using MathPlayer 4 from Design Science, NVDA can read and interactively navigate supported mathematical content. This requires that MathPlayer 4 is installed on the computer. MathPlayer is available as a free download from:

This was from the user guide. did you ever install it then uninstall it? there used to be a bug or it still may be there when you uninstall it it will cause that type of problem in the browser. If this is the case and you had installed it then removed it and then it had problems with the browser you may need to reinstall it again. If you never installed it do not worry about it.

Did you also do a complete uninstall of nvda? You will need to do it under program features remove nvda there then do the following You may need another screen reader to do it

Press the windows key + letter R then type in %appdata% then press the enter key. A whole list of folders will come up locate the folder called nvda then delete it then use the alt key + f4 key to close this screen.

Then you can reinstall nvda again make sure it is a fresh copy and not one that may of been curupted. Hopefully that might fix it.

SPL and Windows 10 App Essentials emergency patches #addonrelease

Hi all,

Important notice for users of StationPlaylist Studio and Windows 10 App Essentials add-ons: originally, I planned to release version 18.12 next week that’ll ship with compatibility flags with future NVDA releases. However, given the speed of development of internal changes to NVDA that deals with compatibility flags, I’m releasing emergency compatibility patches for these add-ons as follows:

  • StationPlaylist Studio: version 18.11.2A for stable, 18.09.5A-LTS for long-term channel subscribers
  • Windows 10 App Essentials: 18.11.2A stable

These emergency patches are designed specifically for people using NVDA alpha snapshots who might be using stable add-on releases, and you can check for updates in about an hour from now. Note that for those using development versions of these add-ons, the needed compatibility flags are already present, so no need to worry.

Special note for SPL Studio long-term channel users: it turns out version 18.09.5-LTS was never released (it shows up as released but you couldn’t download the installer). I’ll be fixing this as part of today’s release.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hey all, Quentin Christensen wrote to me off list, but thanks to all who wrote to me privately. To answer your questions, some of them anyway, I'm doing the donation of royalties route because, to be honest, I'm extremely lazy and extremely stupid in math. This way, I can write, and not be bothered with things such as calculations and the like. I've donated on my own in the past and will do so in the future, but anything so that I can do less work, especially in math, will be the route I take. I wanna create the content while others take care of math and business.

Not that but I just tried to play a tv show on the uk myfive web site. Not only does there seem to be no button but many links of that page are not flagged as links by nvda but still work as links. There seems to be some new coding of web sites around fouling up firefox/waterfox at least for me.
I was yesterday and today trying to register with some sites and the thing kept skipping over parts of the form, which never used to be the case.
It will take a while to find the web addresses fif folks want them but I'm using the latest beta snapshot. No error sounds are made during any of this.
It could and probably is shoddy page authoring, but thought I'd mention it. In the case of the pages I mention, being all UK centric, I strongly suspect that even if I did give them here, they would not be allowed in other countries for copyright and data protection reasons.

Actually I may well have it by email but the real issue is the paper/audio bank statement entry. I may well ask Lloyds about it from my end, but I strongly suspect that they may well have done it for, shall we say other reasons.
There was a local radio program recently that stated that many transactions on line are now disguised in case the person is buying sensitive items, by which I suspect they mean sex toys.
Could be embarrassing I guess, but its another manifestation of the paranoia around data protection we are going through at the moment.

Add-on Updater 18.12 #addonrelease

Hi all,

For those on development list (nvda-devel): don’t worry about the hashtag.

I’m delighted to announce the next generation of Add-on Updater, version 18.12! This version is more than an update – it is an upgrade for a number of reasons. As always, the new version is just an update check away (via Add-on Updater).

Changelog:

  • Keep more add-ons up to date: in addition to adding update support for a number of add-ons (released via 18.11 series), version 18.12 will now check for, download, and install updates for even disabled add-ons. And don’t worry, disabled add-ons will stay turned off after an update.
  • NVDA version compatibility: Add-on Updater will check if the updated version of your add-ons are compatible with the current version of NVDA. This is done by looking for a manifest flag specifying the minimum version of NVDA the add-on will happily run under. Note that this requires a change to various add-ons.
  • Windows release compatibility: no, I’m not kidding. Some add-ons do require a specific version of Windows (or later) to be installed in order to function correctly. If an add-on does say so, Add-on Updater will check to make sure you’re indeed running the Windows release compatible with the add-on in question.
  • Continuity of operations: in the past, if something went wrong while updating an add-on, the old add-on would be removed. This has been fixed via continuity of operations – Add-on Updater will check for possible issues (mostly compatibility) before attempting to update an add-on.
  • User experience for automatic update checks: after Add-on Update checks for add-on updates in the background (that is, not via NVDA Tools/Check for Add-on Updates), you were greeted with a prompt asking if you wish to review updates. This prompt is gone – the update results dialog (which has been renamed, by the way) will show up automatically, mirroring that of NVDA updates.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. If Add-on Updater says that a specific add-on is not compatible with the NvDA version you’ve got, be sure to read the error message carefully, as it’ll tell you the minimum compatible NVDA version.
  2. If for some reason an add-on update says it isn’t compatible with the version of Windows you’re running, be sure to read add-on readme on community add-ons website, as the documentation will tell you compatible Windows release for the add-on.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

thanks, Quentin. I read the section of the guide on headers and searched the whole document for the word unlink but couldn't find the info.

This is a big help :)

Same from me, Joseph!

Thanks so much for what you do.

I use the clipboard add-ons a lot as well, I always have to append info to the clipboard.

I use Golden cursor every day to help people with math, and I use it with other software where object navigation does not even work!

I don’t know what we would do without you and your great add-ons!

Thanks so much, Joseph. I find the various clipboard addons, as well as the Clock and Calendar addon, to be useful. Clip Contents Designer really speeds up my workflow as I often have a need to append items to the clipboard and paste them as one block of text.

Thank you for all that you do for the NVDA user community!

Hi,

These are not my add-ons, but I’ll forward your findings to add-ons list in hopes that someone over there can help you.

Joseph,

Thank you so much for this information. I notice that some addons that I use no longer allow me to fully close their respective dialog boxes/I believe that Clip Contents Designer is one of them, which is useful as it allows me to append items to the clipboard. I also use an addon to customize how the time and date are spoken, which has the same issue. I'm assuming this is compatibility related and I'm curious if you know anything about those addons.

Hi all,

First, for those in United States, hope you’re enjoying your Thanksgiving.

In the next few days, I’ll be releasing major and maintenance versions of various add-ons. These updates will prepare various add-ons for future NvDA releases, specifically making them compatible with minimum NVDA version checks (and in case of at least three add-ons, requiring more recent Windows releases).

In order to reduce possible bandwidth burden on add-on update server, the following add-on updates will roll out in phases:

  • November 22nd: Easy Table Navigator 1.2, Enhanced Touch Gestures 18.12, Golden Cursor 3.3, GoldWave 18.12 (these will hit the air in a few hours).
  • November 23rd: Object Location Tones 18.12, ObjPad 18.12, Resource Monitor 18.12, Unicode Braille Input 2.10 (EOL from Joseph).
  • November 27th: Add-on Updater 18.12, SystrayList 3.1 (no, not Python 3 transition version yet), Virtual Review 2.3.
  • November 30th: StationPlaylist Studio 18.12 (stable), Windows 10 App Essentials 18.12.

Notes:

  • Add-on Updater 18.12 will check for add-on compatibility flags. If an add-on manifest specifies a minimum NVDA version for an add-on and you happen to use an older NVDA release, Add-on Updater will refuse to update the add-on in question. At the moment only a handful of add-ons (including most add-ons from me) ship with minimum version requirement flag, so for other add-ons, Add-on Updater will just assume that new versions are compatible (for now; this may change based on community feedback to avoid updating add-ons whose manifest does not specify minimum NVDA version flag and/or last tested version string).
  • Starting from December 2018, Enhanced Touch Gestures, Resource Monitor and Windows 10 App Essentials will enforce Windows release requirement during add-on updates. Thus, when you try to update these add-ons via Add-on Updater, these three add-ons will wholeheartedly refuse to install if you are running and unsupported Windows release for that add-on, even if you’re running a version of NVDA compatible with the add-on in question. This ensures continuity of operation – the add-on version you have won’t be removed. For reference, Resource Monitor require Windows 7 SP1, Enhanced Touch Gestures require Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 App Essentials require Windows 10 (the upcoming version requires Windows 10 Version 1709). In the future, more add-ons will require more recent Windows releases for various reasons.
  • In a future version of NVDA, NVDA may present “incompatible add-ons” dialog at startup if you are running any add-on not recently updated to specify compatible NVDA releases (minimum <= current <= last tested). Currently the feature that enables this dialog (worked by someone else) is awaiting review, and when it does make the cut to alpha snapshots, I expect an announcement (from NV Access and others) to be made via many channels.
  • Unicode Braille Input 2.10 will be the last version of that add-on from me. I have asked another NvDA developer to maintain this one.

Changelog:

  • All of these add-ons will come with varying levels of localization updates (some don’t have any localization updates, while others do).
  • All of them will come with NVDA version compatibility flags (both minimum and last tested flags will be present).
  • Most of them are Python 3 ready except for certain routines found in several add-ons.
  • GoldWave will include a potential bug fix reported by a user where NvDA may play error tones while performing some commands.
  • StationPlaylist Studio and Windows 10 App Essentials will come with numerous enhancements and bug fixes.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph
