Windows magnifier

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi guys

I was browsing the under development section and saw the add on for Windows magnifier. I knew there was one for windows 7 but no higher back then.

it looks as though this will work on windows 10

I seen this add on a little while back on the section under development.

has any one who has a bit more sight have a play with this add on and how well did it work?

I saw it when installed went up to 16 times magnification in Windows I thought it used to only be like 4 times at one time maybe windows 7 or did it change later on?

it seems to have a stable release number but is still under development. Is it been reviewed at the moment to go onto the main add on list? or are bugs etc still be ironed out?

The add on I am referring to can be found at https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/windowsMagnifier.en.html

Has any one used it with the mouse and did they have any problems like windows locking up? or any ting like that.

There may be some members who could benefit from this add on when it gets released to the main list.

I was also wondering there may be others on this list who do not know about it and may help them.

How does one get started with flight simulators? I'm bored and it might be something worth screwing around with? Or should I just wait until the 2020 version is released?

Re: strange behavior with Microsoft sapi 5 voices and NVDA

Gene

I’m not at all sure reinstalling will accomplish anything.  There is a way to repair SAPI 5, which I don’t know if it will help.  If the voices work before login, it appears they don’t need reinstallation.  I wonder if it is a registry problem.  While I don’t know, maybe the repair procedure or utility might correct that.  The voices clearly work.  They work on the login screen.  Here again, I don’t know but reinstalling SAPI voices might be something to do after running the repair.  Also, if you are going to fool around trying various things, I wonder if and how you would set the voice to something that isn’t SAPI 5 before login so that if trying things makes things worse, you will have speech on that screen.

I don’t know what was done to your computer, but I believe that even for something unrelated to software, if a computer is brought into a shop, routine diagnostic tests and maintenance may be done and I suspect something was done that caused the problems.  Those who have more technical knowledge and know what shops routinely do may want to comment.  In thinking about what you are describing and about a shop I used to use years ago, I’m beginning to think that if you take a computer in for a specific problem and it wrks properly aside from that, that it might be a good idea to instruct the shop to do nothing else.

Hi Jackie,

That's something I was thinking about possibly having to do, we're on
the same wavelength. Trust me I already as they say, googled it so we
don't even have to go there.  Needless to say, the hits were enormous,
and the answer is the proverbial needle in a haystack.   Where can you
find the actual executable file for performing the re-install, that's
the question now.

Assuming you are coming from another screenreader, then often the biggest thing for people is the voice, although depending on how you use your other screen reader, you might find that you need to modify some of NVDA's default settings to be more like what you are used to.  If you are coming from Jaws, there is a handy guide for things you might find useful here: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda-community/wiki/SwitchingFromJawsToNVDA

If you are coming from Window Eyes there is also a guide: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda-community/wiki/Switching-from-Window-Eyes-to-NVDA

And just on the voices on their own, we have a page of extra voices here: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/ExtraVoices

Kind regards

I would suggest consult all the manuals. There is so much info out there that we will be of no help at this poin tin time.

Good luck, practice, and just, practice hard. It is up to you to learn NVDA, after that you need to read the manuals and google and stuff. We have no tips.

Re: Interesting question regarding my system tray

Quentin Christensen

It's not specifically an NVDA quirk, but a Windows one, it's just that because NVDA is always running, it appears more often than with many other icons - basically it's just Windows not always cleaning up properly when a program exits.

We're aware of it, but there's nothing we can do about it, Microsoft will need to fix it.  Of course, if NVDA is crashing or misbehaving, that we DO definitely want to know about, so do be sure to let us know, ask in here, or create a Github issue.

Regards

Quentin.

Yep, and particularly when it comes to Edge, as some people are using the stable builds while others are using the Beta and Dev builds (I don't know any Canary users).
But even outside that, there are very frequent claims of using the "latest" {insert specific software here} that, when asked for a version number and such is produced, turns out to be anything but.
These are really important if one is to give reliable advice, and I learned that a long long time ago when I was more on the receiving end than providing end.

Jackie,

True, if they're third party voices it's the third party that's responsible for them.  I hadn't noticed that detail, for which I apologize.

It still couldn't hurt to try, though I doubt they will help.

Brian, the reason I didn't suggest that was because the voices he's
working with are 3rd party, although considered sapi5.

Do you think they'd help w/that? Uncertain.

Alt key alone doesn't work in a lot of modern probgrammes including, I think, chrome...modern programmes do not really have a "menu bar" as such so the alt key by itself does nothing, rather than take you there as it does in old windows programmes  that have the traditional bar at the top of the window.

Oddly enough, when I highlight these buttons, I hear NVDA say: 'settings and more alt + S' and home alt + h.'

Has anyone else noticed this in latest version of Edge?

Hi Gene,

I don't know how much  clearer I can make it. Apparently, I may be the only one having this issue.  As stated in a previous message.  I launch Edge.  I press alt by itself.  I Press alt + F.  I press alt + S.  Nothing happens.  I used to get some new page of settings load with either just the alt Key or the alt + F key.  Now nothing happens.

In Chrome, just pressing alt doesn’t open the menu.  If you hold alt and type f, the menu opens.  But I don’t think this is the problem being discussed, though I’m not sure what is being described that used to work.

Alt key alone doesn't work in a lot of modern probgrammes including, I think, chrome...modern programmes do not really have a "menu bar" as such so the alt key by itself does nothing, rather than take you there as it does in old windows programmes  that have the traditional bar at the top of the window.

Have you tried, for instance, Alt+plus a letter? The same thing happens with me in latest Edge, where the alt key alone doesn’t work. Hope this helps some.

Oddly enough, when I highlight these buttons, I hear NVDA say: 'settings and more alt + S' and home alt + h.'
