Re: NVDA navigating tab element in webpage

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

There are issues on the Amazon
alexa app for windows via a browser. Actually Jaws manages these a little better than nvda does. I've not investigated exactly what these tabs really are but they seem like some odd type of in page links.

How do you see these tabs? Do you see them visually or using another screen-reader? If I start at the top and move down the page you linked to, I see the following four links in this order:
Videos, Playlists, Community, Channels

You didn't list all the tabs but they sound as though they are the same as I see as links. I see many sites with tabs, see the New York Times Home Page:
http://www.nytimes.com
and look rather near the bottom of the page. At this point, I don't know if you are actually asking about tabs. You may be asking about links that look to sighted users like tabs. I'm not assuming you are doing what I will now discuss, but I'm discussing these matters because I don't know and to help others who may be following the thread.

Never believe or assume anything based on what you see. Look at the site in detail before you conclude something isn't there and don't let a difference instructure fool you. If you see something visually as a tab and you find a link with exactly the same wording, it's very likely the same thing but shown to sighted people as one thing and which a screen-reader sees as another. Are these links what I think you are seeing as tabs?

Hi,
Some web page has the "tab" elements ,the following are two examples
In youtube, each channel, at the top there are four tab e.g. Video,
playlist, etc like that one:https://www.youtube.com/user/Apple

also like the qtranslate page, there are few tabs like How to install
dictionary?; What's new in 6.7.1? etc in
https://quest-app.appspot.com/download

As far as I know currently NVDA do not have any keystroke to navigate to
those tab element, isn't it?
Will there be any work on that?
Thanks.

The info in the User Guide on the Pac Mate here is all I know: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html#FreedomScientificFocus

It sounds like you might already have that driver but a couple of points to double check:
- Did you install the driver specifically (even if you have it installed from Jaws, you still need to install the standalone driver).
- They might not yet support automatic detection but you should be able to set it on NVDA's Braille display settings page (NVDA+control+g then control+tab twice to the Braille page).
- Start the display before starting NVDA (you may not need to but it won't hurt).
- Reboot the computer.
- Make sure Windows recognises the display.  If I have my display turned off, and turn it on while Windows is running, it advises me it has loaded the driver for it, like it does with a USB stick.  (I don't have a Pacmate though, so YMMV).

That's all I can think of off the top of my head for now.

Alternatively, get a flip phone so you have no apps to update. Disabling the play store is simple insanity. Nothing more, nothing less. It isn't as though apps you get are going to stop working as soon as they update. I really do not understand your mentality and have to insist you get a simple prepaid flip phone because this discussion is literally going nowhere.

You cannot.  It is that simple, you cannot.  Why you seem to believe you know better about what should, and should not, be done to keep an operating system, any operating system, or piece of application software appropriately maintained than the people that created it and are tasked with it's maintenance do is a complete and utter mystery to me.

It is one thing to use controls that all end users are provided, which is fine.  It is insanity to try to do blocking not supported by settings themselves, and you constantly demand that you be allowed to do this and that others help you.

You can configure NVDA differently in different applications. Simply go to "Configuration Profiles" in the NVDA menu. It's been a while since I've done it, but I do have NVDA speaking underline and other information in Microsoft Word. It should be pretty straightforward, but if you need help, let me know off list.

Hi,

The subject clearly says off topic. Use your own logic and use the delete key and stop telling people what to do.

Why in the world would you want to remove the play store?

Not keeping apps up to date is just begging for security breaches, especially  on android. I've never understood this mentality - I can see not *automatically* updating apps, but not updating them at all, along with the software security patches? Missing out on so much. You want to keep the phone with the default apps? Good luck with talkback and not having it up to date either - which is pretty essential as it comes out with some pretty nice features you're going to be missing out on.

Might as well just get yourself a flip phone and be done.

You can disable apps, if you do not want or use them

Sorry but you can't remove anything from android phones. It's time to

but i never update my firefox and nvda and other programs forever and never
update them.
it means that i have freedom of choice and can select and use anything that
i wish.
but in android, i wish to completely disable any update and any message and
notification and check for update, if its not possible, i dont wish to use
internet with android to keep my apps factory default and unchanged.

play store download apps automaticly (i think) This is incorrect. If
you want automatic updates, and for security reasons alone you should,
you can set apps up to auto-update. You can, however, not set them up
this way, and you will be asked and can accept/reject.

The fact of the matter is, regardless of platform, you, for any you,
do not have the choice to use your favored version of anything
"forever." It's foolhardy to try, too.

I don't know how many people top post on lists composed generally of sighted users.  I saw an Internet discussion awhile ago indicating that top posting may be becoming more popular.  But on the lists of blind users I follow, this problem is greatly reduced because top posts are generally above the message being responded to.

Since I don't use e-mail lists with vision, I don't know why bottom posting is popular among sighted people.  I don't recall ever seeing that discussed.

Reading one sentence or a phrase from the original and having the response immediately below that is not a problem.
In fact, it is preferable.   The custom of top posting a response and having an almost endless trail of quoted material below, which often requires extensive review to even figure out to whom or about what a specific response is being made, is maddening.

I have said it before and I will say it again:  Those who don't like the quotation of a line or two for context retention will just have to deal with it, as I have no intention whatsoever of changing a decades long use of a standard convention.
