Speaking or identifying selection in Excel

Luke Davis

Hello

I have searched for this but haven't found anything.

If one selects a column or row, or even just a group, of cells in Excel, is there any way to cause NVDA to speak those cells, or at least to identify the range?

The Speak Selection command, which I would expect to do something here, says that nothing is selected.

Glenn, if you keep forgetting this, go to NVDA's input gestures dialog, and in browse mode gestures, change the key to control+f.

The repeat gesture will still be NVDA+F3.

Re: Find On Page

Hi Glenn

First, it is important to ensure you are in Browse mode, otherwise the standard browser Find will activate. Press NVDA + Space to toggle between Browse and Focus mode.

To clarify the commands:

  • NVDA + Control + F performs an NVDA find on the page.
  • NVDA + F3 will find the next instance of what you searched for.
  • NVDA + Shift + F3 will find the previous instance of what you searched for.

These commands should be working reliably in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox etc.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Ben

Hey Sandra

Glad I could help! *smile*

For clarification, I double checked, and Browse mode must be enabled.

Hello,

When I create a table in Microsoft word, provide an alternative text and a description in the table properties, NVDA will announce the alternative Text as I navigate to the table and it will also say "has description". However, I am not sure what I would need to do in order to hear or read the description. Can someone help?

Thank you.

Since that isn't expected behavior, that is a problem with your system but it can't be generalized to be an NVDA problem. I don't know what causes it but if you were using another computer, you shouldn't have the problem.

If you haven't tried another browser, doing so might solve the problem as well.

Re: PDF: Alternate Text and Description of tables

benmoxey@...

Hi Sandra

I just tested this and the alt text title and long description for the table are present in the PDF.

In the export options, ensure “Document structure tags for accessibility” is checked. Note that I am using Microsoft 365, so the tags added to the PDF may have been enhanced since 2016.

Regarding the long description, if this information is essential for the user to understand the table’s contents, I recommend including it in the main body of the document, above the table. Many screen reader users will not know how to access the long description, so this approach ensures the information is easy to find.

Cheers

Hello,

I have written a Word Document which has a table. In the table properties, I have added an alternative text and a description of the table. When I read the table in Word, NVDA will read the alternative text as well as the description. When I export the document to PDF, NVDA will neither read the alternative text nor the description. Is this because NVDA doesn't support this in Adobe DC, or is it that Word doesn't include the alternative text and table description?

The same is true for tables created in PowerPoint, when the files are exported to PDF.

Reading just text in red

Fernando Henrique Botelho <fbotelho@...>

Dear all,

Does NVDA offer a way to read only the text which is shown in red, or only the text which is shown in a color other than the predominant color in a given e-mail message or Word/Excel document?

I sometimes get e-mail messages where someone has made comments in a color which is different from that of the text being commented. I am hoping there is a quick way to tell NVDA to just read that portion of the document.

Thanks,

Fernando

I was a long time window-eyes user, now using jaws which is a very bloated program.
In both of these programs one could set up a window around a portion of the screen and read it with a hot key.
can this be done with nvda?
I have only just downloaded nvda to try it, and find it very snappy.
it does'nt lose focus like jaws!

Cheers Robin.

Dear all,

Where should small suggestions for changes or improvements to NVDA be sent?

For example, here is one:

Right now the command NVDA+S will switch from speech mode talk to speech mode off, to speech mode beeps, and then back.

I have no idea why or who uses speech mode beeps, but I suspect it is much less used than the two other modes. It is not just much more rare to need the beeps, but it is also very important to have a quick and easy toggle to turn speech on and off.

My suggestion is to have NVDA+S toggle between speech mode talk and speech mode off. And have the speech mode beeps be toggled on and off with a triple press of NVDA+S.

Thanks,

Fernando

Re: Find On Page

Find on page is used when control f is used and is not what should be used with NVDA. Use NVDA key f for the find dialog and it will work properly. If you are using the correct find, you will hear find dialog, not find on page.

Regardless of whether it is interfering with the app or not the thing is that it has never worked right, for me or anyone I've seen try to use it.
It should just take you to what you are looking for on the page.
To me, that is what has kept NVDA from being a very useful tool in the tool box, although it is always there, I seldom go for NVDA, because I use the find on page many times a day.
I think more folks should use it on web pages, but most people don't use web pages as much, and as proficiently as they should.

Suggestions can be submitted through GitHub for improvements to or feature requests for NVDA.

That being said, your issue is already solved, and has been for a very long time, by the NoBeepsSpeechMode Add-On.

Every NVDA user needs to look at the Official NVDA Add-Ons Page to see if an add-on might happen to exist that addresses a legitimate desire like this one.  But there are people who use beeps speech mode (and that wouldn't be me) and it needs to be an option as part of the core functionality.  An add-on can eliminate it for those who, like both of us, don't use it.

Re: PDF: Alternate Text and Description of tables

Jonathan COHN

This would not be a Adobe issue. That being said, I am not sure what the correct solution is as I do very little document remediation. Usually, tables are labeled with Captions in HTML, and I believe PDF. I don't know if that is an option in Word. If you are running Word 2016 or newer, there should be a accessibility checker in the same approximate area as the spell checker in the ribbons. My apologies for not being able to be more precise in this message. Perhaps that can give you guidance.
